What shaving brushes in indian barbershops ?

Hi guys,
I made sone researches but I cannot find what type of shaving brush do india barbers use.
It seems to be very floppy brushes (synthetic, goat hair, human hair ???)
I also cannot find any website that sell those kind of brushes.
Do you have any idea ? :)

Question for Sabre owners...

My only GEM razor is an ER1912. I've noticed that with these razors the blade is not fully supported and I almost feel like I am noticing the blade vibrating as it cuts my whiskers. I am just curious, since the Sabre appears to support the blade more, how much this affects the shave compared to older GEM style razors. Does it change the performance? Does it feel different tonshave with because of this design?

Also, as an aside, do any other vintage razors support the blade more similar to...

So badger and blade has gotten a mention on meh.com. A daily deal site that today is selling razor cartridges. It is an amusing read but updates daily at midnight est so it will disappear fast. I will copy it into the next post to preserve it.

G'day

Hello Forum,

Stumbled across this as I was looking to start shaving again, having last wet shaved about a decade or more ago with a Mach 3 and GFT soap! This plus nickshaves on youtube got me wanting to wet shave again!

Just had a peruse of the site and bought a 34C, C&E sandalwood soap, a HJM badger brush and astra sp blades, to give it a go again! (Still have the mach 3 plus the DSC 4x from a free trial offer too!).

Hopefully haven't chosen too poor kit to start DE shaving with and...

How to stay motivated in life

The last few weeks I've had literally zero motivation. Everything from hitting the snooze button on my alarm in the morning, to letting my yard get knee high before I can be bothered to mow. No excuses really I've just been stuck in a rut as of late

So, how do you stay motivated when you get stuck in the ruts of daily life?

Hess Razors

I have been interested in Hess Hair Milk Labs razors for a while now mostly because of it's interesting history, I have been trying to get a Hess 44 for a while now and occasionally (like a couple of times a day) search eBay. I bought a Hess (not a 44) a while back and was surprised that it was the yellow squared front scales, but an Otto Deutsch Hans blade was mounted in it. Okay, so maybe someone repinned a different blade in the scales. Tonight I see on eBay a similar thing. Same squared...

PIF was canceled since the moderators were alerted by a member who concluded that my PIF was a marketing test. It was not. I can see how it was interpreted that way at the end though. I paid for samples, postage to various places around the world, and razors to be given away. My motive was sharing, not marketing.

I wanted to share my fav soap with as many as I could since I love it. It is not a shaving soap, it is a bath soap. When I shared the reviews with the lady who makes the soap...

Early American Old Spice - 1936/1937 (long, lots of photos)

As is documented here, and elsewhere on this forum, Old Spice was originally introduced as a women's scent as Early American Old Spice, and then a year or two later introduced with different labeling as a men's aftershave called Old Spice. The P&G history link above notes that the original introduction was 1937, with the men's version coming out in 1938. That second date is reiterated...

Shave bowl use

Hello everyone! Let me share my "journey" for review. After getting a safety razor, brush, bowl, and supplies this past Christmas, I have gone from loathing (and avoiding) the shave process to savoring and looking forward to it. My understanding is that the shave bowl's intended purpose is for whipping up the lather from the shave soap. As time has progressed, I have stopped using it for this purpose, and now I use it to hold hot water for rinsing my razor while shaving. My question is, am...

Has Canadian Booster ceased production?

I can't find Booster after shaves anywhere. I'm in Ohio but I checked Amazon, ebay, Italian Barber, WCS, Fendrihan, even big Canadian barber supply outlets and it just isn't available. Not just one variety, but all of them are rare. An Oriental Spice here, an Island Bay Rum there, but clearly the line isn't being restocked. I didn't see this one coming, and will be sad if they truly have ceased production.

Today my wife was having a medical procedure that would take some time to perform. Accordingly, I had my laptop with me and booted it up. A man and women were sitting next to me. They looked like they were in their 30s. He peeked over and saw the name of the forum: Badger and Blade. He asked me if this was a hunting forum and I explained to him that it was a men's forum where the emphasis was on traditional shaving. He was surprised that such a forum existed. Semogue's SOC = 'premium' 2-band knot?

Just curious how many brush connoisseurs here have the SOC in 2-band, as I know it has a sizeable fan club. There seems to be a fair amount of variation in 'finest' knots out there, so I'd like to know from these experienced folks who are well familiar with the 'crème de la crème' in finest hair. Break-in period aside, in your experience how does the SOC knot rate on a scale of 'market standard' to 'premium' grade?

Request Help For New Brush

Hi Gents,

I'm (finally) looking to upgrade my shave brush. I currently own an inexpensive Vulfix pure badger brush. I really like the dimensions of it and would like to keep in it's range. It has a 20mm knot, 49mm loft, and the handle is 51mm. I am looking to enter the silvertip world and have no idea where to start. Brushes, although part of the hobby, aren't really something I know very much about. So here I am, kindly asking for your help.

Thank you and have a great day,

Treet Falcon carbon blades

This has probably been a topic before, but I was curious what experiences you've had with the Treet Falcon carbon steel blade. The pictures online made it look so cheap that I half expected to find bubblegum when I opened the package. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the wrapping was quite nice, one of the best I've seen. I have not tried them yet but I am 1-1 with Treet blades (love the platinum, do not love the black beauty). I'll let you know what my experience is.

Some Edge Pics With the New Microscope

So after about a year of just taking up space I noticed the box my microscope shipped in was falling apart. Figured I would break it out and take a pic or two. It is a cheapie AmScope monocular and it came with two 200x digital camera eyepieces, one 640x480 and one 1600x1200, a couple of regular eyepieces 10x and 25x, and four objectives, 4x 10x 40x and 100x(oil). The 100x is out because it just won't work without a prepped slide and a drop of oil between lens and slide. So in theory I have...

Revisited Captain's Choice cream

I was lucky enough to win some samples from Scott earlier this year. I had some great shaves and I felt his creams gave me a better outcome than other products I had been using. Alas, the remaining samples were put aside so I could focus on the soaps I had just migrated to after using nothing but creams since my conversion to a DE.

Well, I revisited one of the samples yesterday and I had a fantastic BBS three pass shave. I usually need a fourth pass to get BBS, but I got three in three...

About razor sharpness

Hi guys! I'm happy to get my first straight razor! It's vintage Soviet Union's razor made from carbon steel and honed by good master. On first shave it shaved very close (though i forgot to do a hair cut test). I don't own any strop, planning to buy a good one. A few days ago I've tried to shave again without stropping but seems it lost it's sharpness. Sorry for the simple question- will it get sharpness back after stropping on good strop or i must do some tricks with some pastes (Dialux...

Straight Razor Head Shavers?

Cheap Newbie Bevel Setter on Amazon

Needed a new cabinet scraper and while shopping on amazon I ran across this rock, a bit smaller than I personally like, but not too terribly small at 7.1" x 2.4". What really caught my eye is the price. For a 1k/3k combo its not bad. No I did not order it. Yes, I still think it is better to just use sandpaper glued to glass or granite or something similar. But some guys just don't think such methods will work, and have no confidence in them. So, here is a very cheap rock that should set a...

Is condensation bad for my razors?

Every time I take a shower it gets really steamy in my bathroom and my razors get a thin layer of condensation over them even the ones in my medicine cabinet. Is this bad for them, will it eventually cause staining? I have some nicer ones in there so I don't want to ruin them. Anyone have any experience with this?

Anyone Heard of or used "Strop Paper"

I have just read with interest this article..

http://ift.tt/2vC1XXX

In particular the section on renovating strops, both linen and leather.
It mentions "Strop Paper"of varying grades and says it will cause the Strop to dry and whiten, when wiped off the Strop can then be polished to a high sheen.
Is this Silicone carbide paper(i.e. wet & dry) or something entirely different?

The poll here asking about BBS or DFS made me realize just how anal I can be about shaving and catching every last whisker. I always shoot for BBS and make at least three passes (daily shaver with rare breaks). When I think I'm done, I start checking again and try to catch any missed spots. Still, after I finish my shower and shave routine and my face is dry enough, I start checking again. If I find any whiskers left, I find using my Norelco will catch them and I'm satisfied. Sandalwood aroma spectrum

I was just eyeing up PAA's sandalwood deodorant as a cart filler, but before I pull the trigger I'd like to know what to expect. I've heard sandalwoods described on a spectrum of woody (natural, e.g. Proraso) to sophisticated or cologne-like (e.g. TOBS). Unless a chart of this nature already exists, we might as well open the discussion and try to categorize as many as possible. Keeping in mind of course that scents are largely subjective, so the more input the better.

1920 Gillette

So, my neighbor and I were chatting about our various obsessions, and I mentioned how much I love shaving with DE razors.

Three days later, he gifts me with a 1920 Gillette, complete with (empty) razor boxes and case that he'd bought at a yard sale the previous day.

I washed it in dish soap and shaved with it and I freaking love it. It seems a touch aggressive, which I love because my whiskers are Sicilian (as is the rest of me) and need some aggression to cut through 'em.

Knot for Duke 3 Handle

I had a shedding problem with my Duke 3, and Simpsons very generously replaced the brush without requesting that I return the original. So I would like to re-knot it. I've done a few restores before, so I think I know what I'm doing, but I'm looking for recommendations as to the knot to use.

I have had mixed results with TGN finest knots. 1 was great, 1 was OK and 1 was really not very good at all. I have one Virginia Sheng Silvertip that is too floppy and sheds. My Sunrise synthetic...

Hey guys,

What are the top 3 reasons why you shave with a DE?

I've been doing this for about 15 years or so. I bought into many ideas early on, such as that this is the way to get the best possible shave, and that cartridge razors are bad for your skin. There is truth in these statements, though they might be overstated somewhat.

Here are my real reasons:

1) Its cool! I just like it. I love the look and feel of a DE. More than the quality of the shave, I just like DEs and wet-shaving. The aesthetics of the whole thing are just wonderful.

LC handle/head original or a mismatch?

I wanted to try a LC, and found this one for $15 on the internet. Seemed like a good buy since the teeth were straight, finish on the cap and base seemed good, and the handle had no cracks. When it arrived yesterday I was very pleased, the plating on the head which appears to be a '21-'28 Old Type is almost 100%, much better than the handle which seems odd. Actually it looks like the head is plated in nickel while the handle is definitely silver. Is this a mismatched set? Did they plate...

The Alphabetical Razor Game.

I was thinking it would be a fun and different way to show off our hardware by working A-B-C through our collection of razors. Starting with the letter "A", let's all post pictures and/or comments about our razors, for example A= Aristocrat. B=Black Handled Super Speed. You get the idea. My idea was that anybody that wants to play along could post pics of their razor that corresponds with the current letter.
I'll outline the format that I had in mind below. If anybody has any...

Read the box people. Always read the box

last evening I was feeling adventurous and grabbed a tea bag out of a box of herbal tea my wife bought a while ago. It said slimming. I thought it was a catchy name and it smelled good. I wondered why she wasn't drinking it. I brewed it up strong and drank it. I had also been drinking a lot of water all day. Round about midnight I learned what that tea was all about. I hardly got any sleep.

Who in their right minds would allow Sena to be put in over the counter tea. Giant warnings needed...

The Eskimo's Hot Towel

Hi guys! I've been working on several projects at my house this summer that involve lots of hard work and sweat. After work I wanted to find a way to clean up quick and get on with other tasks so I started using a hot towel to freshen up. After using this method I guarantee that you'll be refreshed and invigorated!

Step 1: Get a towel (this one is about 12"x24")

Step 2: Get some Somersets shave oil, or any other kind as long as it has some strong essential oils in it. That's why I...

Stick has been great learning tool

Got a Speick stick, cause I read it was a better scent than the cream. And darned glad I did!

It has helped to up my game with other triple milled soaps, and even helped with beard mapping growth directions.

Very cool method of lathering!

I'd gotten pretty carried away with a very wet brush lathering croaps and creams, and got to where I wasn't loading some of the triple milled very good.

First touch up!

So I've been shaving now with my new straight coming up on 2 weeks, and was about 7 shaves in, and could see where I was loosing a bit of sharpness. As my technique is getting better, this was becoming more evident. I was intrigued with the "mystique" of the coticule, and ordered one from Jarrod. I talked to him on Saturday, and got it today. Great turnaround time, and customer service in my book. I wet down my new La Vienette, and gave the blade about 15-20 passes, stropped her down,...

I just acquired a straight on the bay which was listed as a 6/8 Tanifuji. There are no markings which state Tanifuji; it is marked "77" on the tang along with "KRK" inside a circle with a bow tie. Reverse side of the tang is marked "For Barbers' Use First Quality". Looks to be full hollow ground. A quick search leads me to believe it may be German, Karl Robert Kaldenbach.

The blade looked in good condition and I picked it up for $25, so I'm happy with the purchase either way, having...

DE Shaving: Neck Area

Hi B&B, I've been shaving with a double-edge safety razor for about 2 months now with a B40 Jagen-David Safety Razor. I'm at the point where I don't get nicks/cuts very often but I am having trouble getting a smooth shave on my neck area - particularly with the small "dip" (don't know how to call it) near the windpipe. Has anyone got any tips to get a smoother shave in that area? Thanks.

Starting the first of the year, I'll be flying for an airline and will be traveling quite a lot. I started wet shaving with a DE (Merkur HD) and badger brush in 2014 and haven't touched a cartridge since. All my irritation was gone within a month or so. I've been hooked ever since.

My facial hair isn't all that coarse but I have to be clean shaven for work now and can pretty much get away with shaving every other day.

So here is my issue...

Did I dull my blade?

I ordered a shave ready wosty from Griffith shaving goods and it after my first shave I stropped it for the first time. I'm sure I have terrible stropping technique and I possibly dulled it as it failed the HHT.
Should I...
1. try to shave again and see how dull it is
2. Practice stropping more on the leather until it passes the HHT
3. Strop on linen side then go back to leather
4. Take some different advice someone here has to offer

First time stropping and made a stupid mistake

Day 1 straight razor shaving and day 1 on this forum.
Right off the bat I had a brain fart moment and went blade first (as if I was sharpening a knife). I realized my error after a couple of passes and a knick in the leather, much to my dismay. The good thing is I had almost zero pressure on the blade, did not see any visible damage, and the shave afterwards (after some correct stropping) was noticeably better than my safety razor. I mostly just wanted to get this off my chest, but does...

My MMOC is as mild as a Tech

I don't know what the tolerances were on the GEM MMOCs. Either the tolerances were very, very wide or a bunch of people are using the MMOC incorrectly.

I picked up my MMOC about 6 or 7 weeks ago at an antique store. I had heard the horror stories. I was amazed after the first shave at how mild/gentle it seemed. Aftershave spash and balm?

In a lot of, "shave of the day" IG posts and Youtube videos, I see wetshavers starting off with an aftershave splash and then finishing it off with a balm.
The logic they seem to use is that you want the splash as an astringent and then the balm to restore the moisture to your skin and sooth any razor burn.
Im not sure if this is legit or its overkill. Thoughts?

Aftershave spash and balm?

Used some Van Der Hagen deluxe soap today. Better than I remembered!

I had a puck from years ago in my stash of stuff and decided to use it today. I have one of the little green bowls from their kit and remembered you could gently nuke this stuff to form fit the bowl. Took 10-15 seconds and then I let it cool until solid again.

I used my T&H silvertip badger brush (a bit of a lather hog but tameable) and a 1961 Ball End Tech with a Feather blade. I don't think I realized how very good this soap is. Easy lather, very slick, nice shave. And a lovely...

Does BBS Matter?

When I use my more aggressive razors, particularly my Fatip Piccolo, I can get a BBS shave. And generally I can do so without nicks, cuts or irritations. Occasionally, however, there is one spot on my neck that will get irritated. On the other hand, with my more forgiving razors, like my Feather ASD1 or Edwin Jagger DE89, I don't get a BBS result, but I never have any issues with irritation anywhere.

Sure it's great to have that absolutely smooth face, but for how long? By mid-morning...

Who uses the CVS SE blades? Or Rite-Aid?

Is there anybody who likes the carbon-steel SE blades that you find from CVS/Rite-Aid? I dry them after each use because they're carbon

I find to be very harsh because they leave redness behind when I use them in an Ever Ready 1924. Should I try them in a 1912 or something?

Any ideas?

Den Cleanout: Merkur 25c Open Comb and Gillette Super Speed

I have two razors that are not getting used and I'd like to sell:

Long-Handled Merkur 25c Open Comb. I got this as a present 5 years ago, used it twice, and haven't touched it since. There are no nicks or scratches on it, and the combs are perfectly straight. It's like new. $25 shipped CONUS.

Gillette Super Speed. I can find no date code on it, but it has a notched bar, so I think it is a 1948-1950 model. It's clean, straight, and the doors open and close nicely. $20 shipped CONUS....

Most protective soaps for fragile skin?

In attempting to find the most comfortable DE shave experience there have been several revelations since the beginning of this year. Chief amongst then has been finding the right razor for me, then the right blades, then the correct prep routine and post shave routine. It's time to start finding the right soap/cream for the job.

Here's a quick run down of the process as it stands now for reference:
1) Short warm shower, less than 4 minutes. (It's winter in the southern hemisphere and I...

Reattaching SuperSpeed end caps

While cleaning my Redtip, one of the end caps popped off and went down the sink. Luckily I was able to retrieve the end cap. So now here's my question. How do I reattach the end cap. I have a couple methods in mind, each with a possible downfall.

Solder- Will the heat damage the plating on the razor?

epoxy- I am thinking JB Weld. This could be a little messy especially if I use too much.

Superglue- The easiest repair, but it may not be the most permanent fix.

So, what's the fix? I know I...

Optimum Lather Table with Soap/Cream and Water Masses

Introduction

With enough experience, traditional shavers become used to "dialing in" shaving soaps and creams, but this experience is never truly expressed quantitatively. Mass measurements can help the individual quantify the optimum lather composition of soap/cream and water that works best for him for each particular soap/cream. The optimum lather for each particular soap/cream can then be easily and consistently reproduced for better shaves. Further, optimum lathers can then...

What Blade is this?

I realize it's a Gillette SS but is this just generic packaging for a generic blade? I'm asking because good or bad, I like the way it shaves. Is this a decent quality blade in the spectrum of vintage Gillette blades?

Dinner guests who don't eat...

Invited a couple folks over for dinner next week. He will eat anything including his napkin. She, not so much, apparently.

She is his new lady friend. I emailed her and inquired if there was anything she could not eat. These days lots of folks seem to have food allergies, right?

"I don't eat beef. Except hot dogs. I don't eat fried foods. Except buffalo wings. Love wings. I avoid white rice and pasta. Usually. Yada, yada."

Questions for those who have made corned beef or pastrami

1. How long is too long in the brine. I've read, and seen different times. The average seems to be 7 days but I've read amounts up to 14 days, the lowest was 4 days but I figure that was for a really tiny piece of meat.

On the 7 days and up to 14 days it looked like they were doing the whole flat. One was doing the entire brisket.

2. the best pastrami I ever had included both muscles not just the flat. Was that a real traditional pastrami?

Smoke it or collect it or?

So I've been pondering (and struggling a bit) while contemplating a scenario. Thought I'd throw it to the collective and get others thoughts. So the setup... you have the luck to come into possession of a fairly sought after vintage pipe. It's a commonly collected make, and the one you now have is one of the rarer examples, and it's in pristine condition, un-smoked.

So, do you smoke it, knowing that will decrease it's collectors value? Search out someone that collects that brand so it can...

What a difference...

... a blade makes.

I have been shaving with my Dovo Shavette with the Dovo Shavette blades (the ones that are "full length") since the middle of June, and while I was able to get my cheeks and neck done nicely, my upper lip and chin were a challenge. I tried all sorts of things, based on YouTube videos, and stuff read here, but my stubborn stubble wouldn't go away. I would hear scraping noises, but it wasn't going away. I always ended up doing a pass or two with my Harry's razor.

Change of heart?

Today I shaved with B&M Lavanille. Loved it. I can't believe I did not like the scent the first time I sniffed it.

So, Gentlemen, what scent were you against or on the fence about that has since won you over or what scent did you start out liking and end up wondering how you were ever into it? Does not have to be soap, aftershave or fragrance are fine too.

Bad blade?

Is the rumour of the occasional rogue blade really true?

So, I've been using Gillette 7 o'clock sharp edge now for a little while and been achieving excellent results.

This morning I inserted a new blade as the current one had just started to tug a little. It was the 4th blade from this tuck and no problems (not attributable to me) from previous 3.

But this one was not good. Felt rough from the start and lots of irritation and some razor burn at the end. I don't think I did anything...

First straight razor shave, but with a Sextoblade

I've been looking forward to this shave. It did not go well and my 26 year bloodless streak is over. Yes folks, my skin does bleed (hen I got my tattoo two years ago, the artist asked me why I don't bleed when getting inked)

First pass WTG: went easier then I thought. No blood at all. Shaving the right side of my face felt natural, but shaving the left side felt awkward with my right hand, and even more awkward with my left. Couldn't get a comfortable grip.

Advice about synthetic brushs

Hi,

About a month or so ago, I purchased a RR $10 synthetic. A very good brush for the money indeed and it has earned a solid place in my rotation. But I would like something a bit stiffer. While the RR does superbly with creams, croaps, and glycerin soaps, it struggles with harder tallows. Which are my favorites.

Being a dedicated face latherer(?), I really like my small collection of Vie-Long horse hairs. They have the scritch and scrub of a good boar combined with the smooth suppleness...

Looking to get my first straight razor

I think I'm ready to take the plunge. I've been shaving with a DE for many years now. Lately, I've been shaving every day, and a bit of neck irritation has creeped in. Not to say that a straight razor will remedy this problem, but I've read that straights are a bit better for everyday use. Either way, my main motivation is that I just want something new.

So where/what do I start with? I'm considering just randomly picking one of the availabilities at whippeddog. Are there other options I...

Hey everyone,

I'm thinking about one of the open comb Timeless. Any comments on this? For reference, I have Gillette Tech, Super speed, Slim, Merkur Bakelite type (you know, the plastic), Fine Slant, iKon Slant, PAA double open (which may be my favorite now). Since Timeless is so pricey, I need some info on them before I consider them more. The look great, but performance... worth the money? I hate seeing ads for them as used razors. It doesn't look good.
