Soap of the Year

Before 2016, I was focused on shaving creams, not soaps. My staples were XPEC, Salter, Wm Neumann (awesome stuff), Castle Forbes, etc. I used some soaps (primarily Tabac), but not much. At some point early this year, I branched out. I bought at least 25 soaps this year, and haven't been disappointed yet. I've loved all my 2016 acquisitions, including Mike's, CRSW, B&M, MdC, Phoenix & Beau, Eufros, Tabula Rasa, etc. But one really stands out.

Nuavia is a magical lathering solution. It's an expensive upfront purchase, but like MdC, it seems to last forever. I'm pretty sure the per-shave cost of Nuavia does not exceed the other soaps I mentioned. Yet, unlike the others, it has it all going on. I've got all three Nuavias, and love both the Rosso and the Blu (the Verde is a fleeting aquatic scent that doesn't float my boat, but the performance matches the other two). The scent, performance and post-shave feel of Nuavia Red and Blue is above the rest I've tried this year. I sort of hope they don't release another scent, as I'm pretty sure I'll never get through the three I've already got.

What's your favorite 2016 soap?

The Year of the SE

I first tried an SE razor early in the year: a Mongoose. I then ordered an Alumigoose. Next, my Gem blade razor AD kicked in, which includes three MMOCs, a couple 1907 Lather Catchers, a British 1912, a couple 1914s, a Damaskeene, a couple Shovelheads, a Featherweight, a Push Button, a Streamline, a Gem Junior Bar, and a few others that I can't remember. Along the way, I picked up a Valet Auto Strop VC1. Then I went to injectors, including a B1, several E types, several G types, a couple I1s, a couple Js, a couple Ls, an M adjustable, and the current version of the Supply.

Although I have some DEs I love to death (including the R41, Ikon Tech, ATT H2 and Le Coq caged head), and have a couple more on the way (Charcoal Goods level 3 and PAA DOC Evolution), there's something about the SEs. The difference among the Gem, FHS-10, Feather AC, injector and twin injector blades is much more dramatic than the difference among different DE blades. The form factor among the various SE razors is also very different. Yet they all provide tremendous shaves (except the Streamline, which is too mild for my face). The later Schicks don't shave closely without a twin blade, but I have 152 twin blades, so I don't complain. In fact, the Type J Schick with a vintage Personna II twin blade may be my closest shave (sorry, DEs). Unless it's the Supply with a Chick.

Anyway, as I approach the end of 2016, I want to honor the almighty SE which, of all the shaving products I enjoyed this year, gave me the most pleasure. Thank you, SEs!

Happy New Year

New year. New PIF

Ringing in 2017 with a PIF. There will be 3 winners in this PIF and I will let the entries run until January 6 at which point I will use a random number generator to pick the winners. Due to shipping cost I have to restrict this to CONUS and apo/dpo/fpo. I will not restrict the number of posts but use your gentlemanly judgement and if you have on of these abstain so those that haven't tried them have a chance. With the formalities out of the way on to the goods.

1. Gold ball end tech. User grade. No date code. some plating loss.

2. Silver ball end tech. User grade with some plating loss.

3. Fat handled tech. User grade. Some plating loss.

If you have one that you prefer mention it in your entry and I will accommodate as best I can. Each razor will come with a sampler of blades. A simple I'm In. Will do for entry.

Happy New Years Badger and Blade!

Newbie from MS

Yep, we actually shave here.

Doing the obligatory "newbie check-in". Just did the Hall of Fame and Weekly Blade PIF.

Got tired of mediocre electric shaves and cartridge-type razor burn. Decided to try the old-school method and got a Van Der Hagen at WalMart. The first 2 shaves convinced me to ditch the electrics and I went on a week-long vacation with just the VDH. While on vacation (Nashville), we did a lot of antique flea markets, so I've got a nice badger brush ($5) and a Slim Adjustable ($10) to work with. Also picked up a Fat Boy ($17) today at a local vendor mall. I think I've got all the bases covered now and need to work on fine-tuning my technique.

Since I've doing so much lurking and researching at B&B, I figured I should go ahead and register and get involved. Looking forward to learning and sharing.

Aftershave of the Year

I have over 100 aftershave splashes, but one stands out. I acquired a big ol' jug of it last month, and tonight decided to make a backup bottle my final purchase of 2016. As I'm signed up for the 2017 restraint, I intend to make this my last shaving purchase for over a year... I certainly acquired some great AS bottles this year, e.g., Pashana, PAA The Beach, and Barrister's Reserve Cool and Spice, to name but a few, but this one is special.

The stuff is touted as a bay rum, but it's unlike any of the other bay rums I've used, including several from Ogalalla, Captain's Choice and PAA. To my nose, it has a very pleasant vanilla scent, and tremendous face feel. Amazing stuff.

What is it? Derby City Chop Shop Winter Reserve, in the 7.5oz bottle that looks very similar to the bottle of Maker's Mark in my liquor cabinet.

What's your favorite aftershave discovery of 2016?

Amazing times we live in/ newb? Check in

It is hard to not take it for granted this wonderful information riddled world we live in. What I would have given to have all of you as a resource when I first started up shaving. I can assume I am not the oldest nor youngest member here with a DOB of 1975 so, I learned to shave in the late 80's. My old man had an old school way of teaching: I learned to swim by getting thrown in the water and started shaving with a 1966 Gillette DE (which I still have) with absolutely no instruction. Again...what I would have given to have all of you.

Ruby nebula handle

I did some casting today and cut up some blanks and glued the brass tubes in to make a few pens. While waiting until tomorrow for the epoxy to cure I thought I'd bust this handle out. I cast the blank in late August/early July and have no idea what colors I used other than ruby red mica and I think transparent red dye, the other mica colors are a mystery. No beads or anything fancy, I didn't want to spend a lot of time sanding & finishing it. Just a simple shape that I think has beautiful coloring. I need to start writing down what I do because I like the effect on this one, it looks like a nebula to me, and I have no idea how I made it. Already drilled for a 24mm knot to be set at 48mm.

I gotta get some knots! The Christmas restraint is up so time to place an order.

HELP selecting a timeless razor

I have had an itch for a timeless razor for a while. I have a birthday in a couple of weeks so what better time.

My current daily driver is an ATT Kronos R1. I really enjoy this razor and am looking for something with a comparable blend of efficiency and comfort. I am a daily shaver so I am not interested in the OC. I am considering the SB or the scalloped baseplate. My primary question regards the blade gap (0.68 vs 0.95). Which would provide a similar experience to the R1. I know 0.68 more closely approximates the R1 blade gap. But, many have opined that the 0.95 is quite comfortable.

Please share your experiences.

HELP selecting a timeless razor

Tillotson & Co

This Tillotson razor ( England 1830- 1859) became the piece for me to use a slab of horn I recently posted on Daves (GolFisHunt) thread. The blade was in so-so condition but sanding works wonders as usual. I had to remove a chip in the edge but not much was lost . The bevel is now 16.05 and if I tape it'll be 16.45. A slight bit more at the very tip putting it at 17.20.

The scales mimic the originals in shape. I didn't use the original wedge ( lead) as I didn't like the way the blade sat in the scales. I used my go to .45 cal. bullet to make a new wedge and still keep it lead.

I like this this style of blade as well as the age of it is cool. Now let's see it it shaves as well as others I have in this style.

DE's New Year, Classic Shave

Ok Folks,

First things first, let me set the stage for you. It is presently a quarter to five on New Years Eve. I'm dressed for a NYE party and shaved with a DE for the first time in my life about 45 minutes ago. In hindsight, this might have been an ill-advised plan given that I went into this madness with the expectation that I might come out the other side looking a bit chopped. As Luecke2326 can attest, I've been patiently waiting through the holiday order deluge for a few items that finally arrived today. More waiting wasn't an option.

But I have some great news to report. I really didn't cut myself at all. If one wants to be really nitpicky, I might have had a couple of tiny, tiny red marks that I guess might have been cuts(?). I am not even certain, they were so, so minor that a quick rinse and they were gone. Didn't even bother with the aluminum block.

Not sure if people do this (hadn't read any other journals before posting mine) but here are some photos of my first shave results. http://ift.tt/2iRCAPj

Now, I also have a bit of a confession here. I lost my gumption and woosed out (partially) on the 3rd pass of my jaw line and chin. Once I gave in there, I felt OK with totally avoided my mustache on the 3rd pass as well. Did about a literally 5 second cleanup on my chin and mustache with a cartridge. The shave in these areas is not quite as close, which is fairly noticeable in the pics but not as much in real life. This is all slightly disappointing, although overall I could not be more happy with the fact that I got a decent shave (probably a little closer than with a cartridge) and I am really no worse for the wear!

Now for the sordid details of my gear. Everything I have is described in this newbie thread here: http://ift.tt/2hAjuIq

Gillette Slim on #2
Astra blade
RazoRock P160 shave soap
RazoRock plissoft synthetic brush
Nivea Shave Balm

Lessons learned: It is more difficult than expected to break bad habits formed using cartridges. Pressing too hard. Going too fast. Passing over the same skin more than once....

A new beginning. I must admit, it was awfully fun. Most enjoyable shave I've had in quite some time.

Happy New Year! Cheers, and thanks for reading.

soup/stock/sauce pot or maybe dutch oven

Managed to toss the warped cheapo 5 quart pan that I have had for quite some time. I am wanting to upgrade my cookware as I retire old pieces.... Showed SWMBO a picture of the all clad stainless 5.5 quart dutch oven and all was well and good until she saw the price. I am in super saver mode at the moment to help fund building a house so I am looking for a bang for the buck kind of option here. Staub and LeCruset look nice but I have been told they are too heavy (and of course they will not fit into the price category... We have a 8.5 qt scanpan dutch oven and she likes that alot (I didn't tell her how much it was and it was purchased prior to current austerity measures).

We have very limited space so we both have a strong preference to have a pot with small hand holds rather than a large handle that is often found on sauce pans.

I guess I am looking for a 5ish quart pan that is relatively short/squat, heavy enough to not warp, not a total drag to clean, and will be able to work on my current and future stove (have electric glass cooktop now and going to have a gas range in the new house). I would like to keep it under a hundred but pointers to brands/where to shop/ or even features to "must have" or avoid would be appreciated.

Thanks
Ruckin.

.ps - Happy new year.

Catie's Bubbles LPV and Stirling Sandalwood and Irritation

Hi all,

I have a question for all of those that have used LPV and Stirling Sandalwood.

I have a sample of LPV and I have used it twice, and both times it gave me a burning/itching sensation while it was on my face. I was able to finish my shave, but it made me not want to buy a full tub....

Now, on to the Stirling Sandalwood....

I have read that some people get a burning from this. Now I love Sandalwood and tried Proraso, TOBS and AOS. None of those give me any irritation. I have also tried a few different Stirling and no irritation yet.

So, you all think that there might be a chance I'll get some irritation from the Stirling Sandalwood if the LPV irritated my skin?

I'm going to be pulling the trigger on Soap/Splash/Balm set from Stirling and the Sandalwood is in my top 5 for sure (I'm also looking at Executive Man and Mountain Man).

Thanks for looking all and happy shaves!

Final shave of the year .

For my final shave of 2016 ..... preparation was sleeping late and watching the first half of the Louisville - LSU football game. Then, a nice hot shower ..... Haslinger Schafmilch soap face lathered with my Semogue 610 boar brush ..... very smooth comfortable two pass BBS shave with my Merkur 39C Slant and an Israeli Red Personna blade (third and final shave with this blade) .... warm water rinse, cool water rinse, and Osma alum block all over ..... final cool water rinse ..... Pinaud Clubman splash, finished with Kiehl's Facial Fuel moisturizer.
All in all, a wonderful final shave of 2016 !
My face will be smooth as silk for New Year's Eve !
What are you gentlemen doing for your final shave of 2016 ?

Under-rated items

I enjoy a good espresso, but I'm not a big time drinker, so it's hard to justify spending a lot on a machine. I had bought a Hamilton Beach Cappuccino Plus after my last machine died and used it for a while until my mom picked up a Breville Cafe Roma for $5 for me at a yard sale. It was new in box and I knew the Breville name so I started using it, and it was OK but I never really liked the pressurized portafilter and some other aspects of using it. Recently it started to develop a bad electrical smell and didn't act quite right, so I put it away and pulled back out the Hamilton Beach. It reminded my why I'd gotten it in the first place. It has a thick cast aluminum non-pressurized 58mm portafilter and 15 bar pump. With fresh beans and it made the best shots I'd had in a long time. For a low price it really is a good home machine. I'm very happy I pulled it back out.

What other gems have you run across that have great value or might be under-rated or under appreciated.

Pondering a pipe question.

Im sitting here in the car listing to the radio (waiting for my wife ) and pondering a pipe related question. Why do some tobaccos burn down cleanly to a fine white ash and others seem to just turn to hard black chunks?

Is this from the type of tobacco? Casings or topping? Moisture level? How the tobacco is packed? Or maybe a combination of things? Im curious. I have some that burn wonderfully like the ribbon cut dunhill blends. Then some just don't burn down that great. Im guessing flakes are that way because of how they are pressed? Even finer ribbon cut light aromatics seem to burn down to hard chunks for me. Maybe packing too tightly and not enough oxygen for a clean complete burn?

It hasn't been a major problem. Just something I can't really answer for myself.

Thanks!
Mark

Name that ONE item (hardware or software) that

you read about on this forum all the time, but for whatever reason, you'll not obtain. Something that you've tried and not liked doesn't count. It has to be something that has never been in your den and as far as you're concerned never will be. A super expensive item that you lust after but can't afford doesn't count either.

For me it's an alum block. Honestly, prior to reading threads about them, I had never heard of them. I don't think I'm a candidate. Not gonna get one.

What say you?

Happy, Healthy New Year to you all!

Thank you to Captain Murphy

Just bragging a bit. Sent my razor off to Captain Murphy and it's back!

I already posted the photo's in my gallery but my 1975 V4 Gillette Super Adjustable Super-109 arrived back from restoration today. Oh my! My wife said, "it looks brand new".

Can't wait to shave with it today, almost don't want to as it's so new and shinny.

See the photo's in my gallery, big thanks to the captain!

Lessons Learned from Shaving in 2016

I have noticed that folks are just about as happy as they have made up their minds to be. - Abraham Lincoln

There is a lot of life experience in the wet shaving community. Much of this experience is shared in the forums, on blogs, and in the videos made about the hobby. Here is what I learned about life from shaving in 2016.

While it's nice to be important it's far more important to be nice.

Responsibility almost always comes with benefits. But these benefits do not belong to you, they belong to the position of responsibility. When you no longer have the position, you are no longer entitled to the benefits. You have to be humble, pass the flag along gracefully, and take advantage of your influence instead of your benefits.

If people would boss themselves they would have no need for bosses.

Don't worry yourself about what other people are doing to hold you down, figure out what you have to do to pull yourself up and out. When you need help, get help. There is nothing wrong with that. But at some point you have to declare yourself independent and self-reliant, or you will forever live in your parent's house under their rules.

The fellow who is pulling on the oars hasn't time to rock the boat.

Trolls are everywhere. It seems like everyone has something negative to say on the internet. If you give them something to do, they won't have time to troll. People feed not off of power but off of responsibility. After all...

...the only safe and sure way to destroy an enemy is to make them your friend.

In everything, there is a right way, a wrong way, and everybody else's way. You don't have to do things the same way as everybody else. As long as the end result is the same, you did it right.

It is a pitty that so much reform begins with remorse.

When things don't go our way we begin to question their validity rather than criticize our own technique, response, and motive. Were your actions truly altruistic? If given another chance would you do the same thing in the same way? Or, as Steve Jobs would ask, "If today were your last day on earth, would you want to do what you are about to do today?" When the answer is "no" for too many days in a row you know it is time to make a change.

A great command enables one to be still.

Its okay if you cut yourself while shaving. The razor did not set out to cut you that day, it just happens sometimes. Likewise, the person that cut you off in traffic did not set out on the road to specifically target you, lying in wait until just the right time. You just happened to be there. It wasn't personal, people are just rude sometimes. Bumping in to people as we go about life is unavoidable, but we can control both our actions and reactions.

Life's precipices are mostly bluffs.

Challenges always seem more difficult than they really are. To accomplish something usually all you have to do is get started.

Lessons Learned from Shaving in 2016

A few half price lather bowls

We had some come out of the kiln on the last firing that had a finish not quite right. In all other respects these are top rate bowls. Some of the glaze from our Cayenne (red) bowls "bled" over onto the neighboring Blue Sky bowls. So rather than being white with bold blue accents the accents are blue with a frosting of red as in the pictures. Instead of a first come, first served on these I thought it would be great to open it up so others can have a fair shot at them.

To purchase, here is how you do it and this was a suggestion last time from David ("dfoulk"). If you want one simple reply in this thread by posting, "I'm in." I will let it run a bit, maybe a couple of days. Then I will use random.org to select the five who these bowls will go to. The bowls are just $12.00 each plus $9.00 shipping. You will be invoiced for them and they ship once it is paid. Each bowl sold will also come with a couple of free samples of ours for you to try.

Good luck to each of you!

"Beard Mapping" and Learning to Shave with a Straight - Opinions, Please.

We see this recommendation often here. I think, "beard mapping" is non-productive for new straight shavers. What matters is creating flat surfaces for the razor to safely shave. You can't do this and worry if the hair leans left or right. Besides, if we shave at the intersection of hair and skin, what does it matter what is going on above where the razor cuts?

What say you?

[I post here, rather than the clinic, in the hopes of getting responses from a wider range of experienced shavers.]

TSP Il Capitano shaving soap

I had the first and i suspect last shave with above shaving soap. The safest approach for me would be to say i did not like the smell, and i did not get my usual close shave,i am comparing it with Palmolive that works well with me.
Its difficult to apply sufficient soap to the face, and even after the same time hydrating the whiskers were still hard compared to the cheap Palmolive.

Cannot for the life of me find any info on this straight and it's amazing PLEASE HELP

I picked up this guy at an antique store for $20 about a month ago and I'm looking to getting it restored. It is completely intact and in great shape, no pitting or rust just some tea staining. It is true from what I can see it's still nice and tight scales are not damaged at all. I have yet to measure it but I would imagine it to be 7/8 in size. My issue with it is I cannot find any information on it and I mean absolutely nothing. I don't know if I over paid or not but I figured at that price I could take a chance on it. The brand says CURTEN & HOLTGEN Solingen. Any info on this guy will be much appreciated thank you for your time guys.

WOW. Will be ordering a few years supply of these.

I finally broke into that 20 pack of Polsilver Super Iridiums. Half blade in my shavette. Super comfortable and nice shave. It felt very very sharp, and did bite me once on my right cheek, but after I realized the sharpness and slowed down a hair, it was heavenly. I expected it to be smoother but not sharper than an Astra SP, but it felt quite a bit sharper and smoothness was at least as good or possibly smoother than a Astra. Astra SP will still be my go to, but that was a treat of a shave!
