Well my next project is on the way. Nothing too dramatic. Just a couple old brushes I picked up from earlsnuff4588 on ebay (if I'm not allowed to mention his name let me know and I'll edit my post). He was kind enough to let me use his photos. I love the pattern on the Rubberset. For under $30 shipped, for both, I'm pretty happy. I've been looking for a butterscotch but haven't found anything I really liked. This one was cheap enough for me to mess with and not get too upset if something goes wrong. Both handles are about 2 inches high.

I was wondering today about how hard are some of the vintage carbon steel straight razors?
What got me to thinking about this was that I have an antique W Rose leather knife from the late 1800s. It is some of the hardest carbon steel that I have ever dealt with when trying to give something an edge. When I originally got the knife it had one of the corners chipped off and I tried to use a file to reshape that edge and quickly found out that the knife was a harder steel than the file I was using. I had to go to some nice hard, high carbon steel files to even get them to work that steel at all. One thing about that knife, it that it took a LOOONG time to get the edge worked up compared to softer steels in other blades, but that edge is scary razor sharp and stays that way for a very long time with just stropping with white rouge.
So with that that, did a lot of the vintage razor makers go for a higher carbon content to make the steel harder to keep the edge longer or did they go with lower carbon content to have the steel more soft and easier to take an edge but not keep the edge as long as one made of harder steel?
Are there some brands that are known for being harder steel that other brands?
I'm not into fountain pens as much as wet shaving, but I do love my Pilot Namiki vanishing point. I dropped it today, while closed, and it landed perfectly on the writing end. As you can imagine, this fall caused the nib to take a direct hit. It looks badly bent, but "just the tip." Only 1 mm or so. Can this be repaired, or do I just replace the nib? I love this pen! If in can be repaired, where do I send it?

24mm knot (measures 25mm at the handle) and 52mm loft. 3-band silvertip is very soft brush with medium density, good backbone considering the softness, and splays nicely. Purchased new around Christmas and used sparingly. Not a shedder at all. Selling because I have converted exclusively to fan shaped brushes.

24mm knot (measures 25mm at the handle) and 48mm loft. Outstanding 2-band silvertip knot with strong backbone and fairly soft tips. For a 2-band they are soft, a bit of the gel feel when wet, but not mushy. Purchased new last fall directly from Shavemac. Not a shedder at all. Selling because I got the same knot in a custom brush with a taller loft and taller handle.

At $15, hurts to toss that.
Mine did get some pink mold on it. People that do not live in the tropics - let's call them "mold deniers" - have doubted this, as they haven't seen it.
I scraped the the puck and made sure it was dry before sealing in the containers I use.
Cella, I have seen oily beads of rancididy upon ... Tossed that. This was a slice from the 2-kilo. I suspect Cella in the jar has stabilizers.

YES! They are pretty danged incredible. (To clarify, these are their artisan line hot process tins, not the glycerin line tub/puck soaps)
I have and enjoy Gin Fizz, Sandalwood Smoke, Jack & Ginger, and Goldrush - oh, these are so good! Packaging is pretty cool too. I keep these on display in the den.
If you are buying from Bullgoose, then I would recommend the Vie-Long Lord Randal in white horse hair. It's a nice all-around brush and a BG exclusive.
I like Vie-Long horse hair brushes, but the knot tends to clump up when wet compared to boars and badgers. To mitigate this, I would suggest dunking the horse hair knot into a vessel containing standing water for around 45 seconds just prior to shaving, rather than soaking, then shake it off lightly and load from the puck or cream in the bowl, adding small splashes of water to build the lather as you go. Not my favorite knot for face-lathering, but the lather can be built from the puck in a bowl for sure. Go gentle with it, though, as horse hair knots are alleged to form a whole in the center if too much pressure has been applied (I'd love to see a picture actually illustrating this).
I find the 50/50 (white or bleached and striped) mane to tail ratio to be preferable on the skin to the 35/65 (brown hair) mane to tail ratio. Strictly bowl-lathering and painting on the lather, the 35/65 ration is fine though.

After years of nagging for not shaving as much since leaving the Armed Forces I decided to take up DE, in doing so I have in a couple of months amassed 6 razors and various creams, a bowl and other bits and bobs.
Today razor 5 and 6 turned up a nice win from Ebay of two techs for £11 inc p&p, missus starts questioning why do you need more? Because they are different styles

Ok, I'm still really new to this, I've only really just had a little stubble goatee, but lately I've wanted a little something thicker, the wife doesn't really like it but I want it.. Anyway all I've ever really used was bar soap, and lately I switched soaps and I don't think it's really likes it, but I do. It's starting to flake, so I was wondering if there's a good cheap soap or shampoo that I can use to get rid of it and maybe soften it up? Maybe with a softer beard/goatee the wife won't be so mean,, thanks.. JR

I like Shark Super Stainless, they're very smooth and forgiving, but, like most regular brands, I can only get 3 good shaves per blade.
It's not often I use one, but when I do, I always enjoy the shaves.
I'm on day 5 of the "Shark Week" challenge - 4 good shaves so far, but no shave today because my face was still fairly smooth from yesterday afternoon's shave before going out last night.......
But the way I see it, I'll enjoy tomorrow's shave all the more

I very very rarely smoke, but decided to have some cigars on hand for an infrequent splurge and for the guests. I'm looking a full-proof cigar cutter that would work well for a petit corona. Nothing too fancy, but not a keychain throw-away either.

Any of you guys tried this new cream from the UK 'Executive Shaving' company yet?
I'm thinking about getting some as would like to try a cream with Shea Butter in. The ingredients list seems extremely similar to Nanny's Silly Soaps to me. Wonder how they'd compare.
I used my vc4 today for the first time. It was not good at all. I used a feather carbon single edge blade, and it pulled pretty bad. I switched it out for my super speed razor with a Gillette 7 o'clock green DE blade and it was back to normal feel. I will try a feather stainless blade in the autostrop but if it doesn't work well, that'll be it for that razor. I'm disappointed because everyone brags on the autostrop, but I just didn't get the good result. I don't think there are any other blades I can try.
I also have a gem 1912 which I haven't tried yet, so tell me: what is the sharpest blade I can get for that razor?
I just tried the Original Ogallala Bay Rum soap this morning and I LOVED IT! Just wanted to give you my thoughts on it. I'm just starting out with wet shaving, so I'm no expert.
I got recently some Ogallala Bay Rum Shaving Soaps (Bay Rum, Bay Rum & Sandalwood, and Bay Rum & Sweet Orange). When I first opened the package last week, my senses were overwhelmed! Honestly, I didn't think I was going to like it. It had a REALLY strong scent of clover and there was something else that put me on the fence about it. So I sat it aside.
Later I grabbed the ziplock bag I put them in and pulled out just one soap. It happened to be the Bay Rum & Sandalwood. WOW! I really liked the scent. It wasn't as overpowering as before. So, I think the heat from the mailbox had intensely activated the sent or something. I put it away and after a while pulled out the Original Bay Rum and really like that as well. However, I'm not sure I like the Bay Rum & Sweet Orange... Don't know what it is, but I guess it just isn't my thing. I'll revisit it after a while.
This morning I got out the Original Bay Rum and proceeded to load my brush. The puck was dry, so I lightly shook the brush a couple times before loading. At first, there were a lot of large bubbles, but after about 20 sec, it started coming together. Added a bit or water and worked it some more. I then transferred the large bubbles to my shave bowl, then loaded a bit more.
The lather whipped up pretty good in my shave bowl. I found myself stopping to enjoy the smell more than once! Once I had some good peaks and a nice sheen, I started applying it to my face. At first, it seemed thin. So, I whipped it a little more and worked it on my face and got it to thicken up a little more. Still seemed a tad thin, but I proceeded to shave as it felt nice and slick.
The shave went smooth! I got in a 3 pass shave and enough for some cleanup. Loved the smell and I'm looking forward to trying the Bay Rum and Sandalwood soap soon!
All in all, a great shave!

I've seen those posts/threads deleted more often than not. Some of them probably aren't reported I guess. As I tried to explain in the other thread, if you're following an auction, I'm sure you won't be happy if someone else posts a picture from the auction on the biggest shaving website in the galaxy.
I had to fly up to DC for a short, two-day training class on Monday. I wanted to travel light and not check a bag, which meant I couldn't bring a DE razor. I considered just not shaving or buying a disposable razor, but in the end I decided to try my wife's Dorco Pace 6 (with a new cart, of course).
I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the shave I got with it. It wasn't baby-butt smooth, but it was a pretty respectable shave - especially for one pass.
I've been seeking the perfect shave for the past month or so. I've read, and learned' a lot from the B&B.
So far, I've learned from reading various posts that there's no perfect pre-shave prep, nor the perfect razor, blade, shaving cream, or after shave. There's no such thing as ''one size fits all.''
I have learned that haste doesn't make waste, it tends to make you bleed. So the #1 thing I've learned so far is patience.

Try it. Don't rinse it all the way off just wet your hands and give it a good few passes off your face, leaving a little remaining and build your lather on top of it. Combined with cella and I was knocking down my 7 days growth (mini beard) line up with no soap on my face just the remaining slickness. Anyone tried this before?
In a recent perusal of the Gifts & Care site, I noticed that Vie-Long has a number of mixed-knot brushes available: horse-synth, boar-synth, horse-boar, and horse-badger. Anyone try these? I have used the horse-badger extensively in the past, and while it's not my favorite knot for face lathering, it does have its all-around appeal.
My understanding is that synths don't need to be soaked, horse needs a short soak, badger a medium soak and boar a long soak. So I wonder about short soak-long soak horse-boar combo. As it is 70% boar, a long soak time then?
Recently I picked up three new aftershaves as I was curious. I've never before used any kind of alcohol based AS so I was curious to see how my face would react.
What I picked up:
Myrsol Agua de Limón, glass bottle
Myrsol Agua Balsamica, glass bottle
Aqua Velva (by Williams), glass bottle
I love the Myrsol lemon. A fairly strong scent of lemons, not too much of an alcohol burn (yet) and a fantastic menthol chill that unfortuantely only lasts a few minutes. The scent doesn't stick around for long enough either! I'm not sold on the Myrsol balsamic scent but my face definitely seems to like it. I've had no problems with them so far. I haven't tried the AV yet; initially I think I smelled cloves when I had a sniff.
Sometimes I get dry skin and I'm wondering how to deal with that if I want to continue using alcohol based AS splashes. Would you apply a balm or a cream after the AS? Or before? And what kind of product would you apply?
It's possible for me to get products from Lucky Tiger here in Sweden and I've considered Lucky Tiger after shave & face tonic. Is that something one would combine with an AS splash or just use on its own?
Also available in Sweden are products from Fine Accoutrements. Is Fine Accoutrements L’Orange Noir a product one would use "straight up", or combine with a balm/cream? Any comments on L'Orange Noir? Is it a nice splash?

How would you guys rank the SE blades in terms of sharpness or smoothness?
So far, I've found the Carbon Steel brands like Treet or ASR from the CVS chains. I've also seen places like Walgreen's carry the Gem Stainless Steel ones.
I can find a lot of rankings for the DE brands, but there is very little info on the SE blades.
How would you rate these?

My Pagoda arrived today! It's a nice enough pen that I thought that I'd write a review. I haven't found any online; that may be because it looks like a relatively new pen.
I became interested in Delta pens from Goulet Pens' advertisements when the orange celluloid Unica came out. I didn't buy on of those (or the red acrylic Unica from Anderson Pens), but eventually bought a blue acrylic Unica as I have been looking for a thick-sectioned pen with a fine or extra fine nib in a nice acrylic. I enjoyed the blue Unica enough to look for an orange celluloid or red Unica, and found an orange Unica on the 'bay which I won. I was looking for the red one and ended up finding a variety of models on eBay, including this one.
My understanding is that the Delta Pagoda is the first of Delta's "Asia Collection" line. It comes with a red acrylic cap in gold trim, or a blue acrylic cap in rhodium trim. You can get a rollerball, fusion nib, or gold nib. For cost reasons, I went with the fusion nib. It's a #6, according to MarteModena's descriptions on eBay. I am not certain if it disassembles, however. I hope so, because you can get a wide variety of #6 nibs (and I have heard of the gold plate on the fusion nib becoming unglued).
One comment about pricing - they were initially sold as $1 bids, and sold for a variety of prices (lowest winning bid was $30 for the red model). MarteModena then started selling them at a base of over $100, and it looks like none of those sold. I was kicking myself for not bidding on one when they were cheaper. Then they started relisting them at $1, and I won mine for the grand total of $36. Keep in mind that the shipping & handling is about $50, so you are paying a lot for that! It reached me in about 2-3 days; I forget when it shipped, exactly. I then paid in extra $20 for an EF nib (EF or broad are $20 extra, stub is $50 extra, and fine/medium are at no additional cost).
I also don't know what MarteModena's relationship with Delta is, as you can get their pens for surprisingly low prices at times. I've heard that they sell Delta's seconds - the pen I received looked fine and without any defects or blemishes, FYI.

First impressions - the box is cool. It has a pagoda design on plastic, and comes off when you unscrew 2 knobs on either side of the box. Sadly, the interior is designed to hold a pen and doesn't have room to repurpose the box for anything else. That box was contained inside another box, padded with peanuts, and the whole thing was inside a DHL plastic shipping bag.
Pen - it's a little heavy, and feels like a very solid pen. There is no "rotating ring" like on the Unica. The red acrylic cap is beautiful, and has a lot of depth and reflectivity that isn't captured by the pictures. There's a ring of similar acrylic on the body as well. The clip looks really cool (I love Asian architecture), and the cap also seems to be airtight (I couldn't blow air through the cap so it shouldn't dry out like some of my pens). There's a gold design ring on the body as well.
The section width (see last photo) is quite wide, and is concave so it feels very secure.
It uses a cartridge/converter, with something that I can't quite figure out. It says that it is a piston filler/converter. The converter has a long metal handle that you can access by unscrewing the end cap (see below). I don't understand how to covert the pen into a piston filler, however. If so, that's a nice feature.
It writes with some feedback (EF nib), but without problems. It's a nice nib, feeling similar to my Lamy EF nib. I used J. Herbin's Rouge Hematite in the Pagoda.
All in all, it feels like a very expensive pen; I would say that it's probably worth $100-200 list. The quality feels like a step up from the Unica. The nib itself is nice, although if it is replaceable then you can get a ton of different #6 nibs out there for relatively little money.
I hope that this was helpful; I'm quite pleased with the pen.
I've been looking for a new soap bowl. As I've was looking around a strip mall. I found a lot of Soup Mugs/Mugs/Bowls for less then $5. Was going to go with a Campbell's Soap Mug. But what I found for a $1:
The black bowl is an old noddle bowl that I've been using.
I just got home. So, I still need to wash it. I hope it works out. They, told me it a bakery pot. But it's doesn't really matter cuz it found it for $1. And goin to use it as my lather bowl.
