BebeLush Shave Soap

I purchased a tin of this in a recent Amazon order, as they are a new Vendor at B&B and I wanted to give the soap a try. The company claims "natural, organic, chemical-free" beauty products, so though I don't have a complete ingredients list handy, I'll assume for now that it doesn't contain words with twenty letters and phrases like "hydroxy-" or "dodecyl." The shave soap does contain cocoa, shea and mango butters. It comes in this tin:

In size, it's fairly comparable to the one from Pre de Provence, and contains a hefty 4 oz of soap. I'd characterize its consistency as harder than the Italian soft soaps and those I've encountered from artisans like Mike's and Saint Charles Shave, but it doesn't approach a triple milled soap in its consistency. Without having a complete ingredients list handy, I can't tell just looking at it if it's a glycerin based soap, but have a look for yourself (this was post loading, hence the smeariness to the surface):

I did a test bowl lather last night, just in the interest of science, of course, though bowl lathering soaps is not my favorite way to do it, nor is it my forte. I soaked the surface of the soap for about 5 minutes in warm water, then took a damp brush (my recently-acquired Rudy Vey synthetic with a Mühle STF 25 mm knot) to load it for about 40 seconds. I got a nice protolather to form, and proceeded to build the lather for a couple of minutes, progressively adding water. This yielded the following:

The lather quality was decent, though the bubbles were a bit larger than normal. In cases like this, I often find that lather to be unstable, so I left it to sit for 5 minutes to see if it would break down. I have watched Captain Fawcett's Shave Soap break down before my eyes, even when starting from a comparable amount, so I was pleased to see that it stayed together quite nicely:

When I applied it to my hand, it was ok, but seemed pretty airy. This morning, I used it for an actual shave and face lathered instead, as is my preference. This time, I loaded for 1 minute and then built the lather on my face. I'm happy to say that the lather was very rich and slick, and also proved to be very stable. After my usual two passes, there was sufficient lather in the brush for another two if I needed it. Post shave feel was excellent. You can really tell that there are shea and cocoa butters in there. The scent is advertised as Bay Rum, Orange and Clove. My nose pretty much picked up Orange, though the bay rum was there in the background, kind of like Orange Juice with a twist of Bay Rum. The clove was not noticeable to my nose. My only real quibble was the tin. Granted, I was using a 25 mm brush, but loading from the soap felt a bit cramped. That's a minor complaint, though, as the performance was very good.

Want to Buy Tradere OC

I found a Tradere SB right here on B&B. I like it.....a lot. Now it's time to add an open comb to the growing stainless collection. If you have one you're just not passionate about, I'll happily pay a premium for the right razor. Would prefer a second gen, but open to hearing about whatever is out there.

How do you transport your DE safety razor?

Hey folks,

How do you generally transport your safety razor if you're traveling somewhere? In my recent travels, I just shave before i leave and let that be that. But sometimes on longer trips, you need it.

So what do you do?

Shaving Brush, new or restored?

I was wondering how many people would rather use a new brush or a new like restored brush. Every brush I have (4) is an older low end brush, Two ever ready and two white brushes with the word Sterling on the bottoms on a paper type label. All four of these brushes do the job for me, however, I am looking to either upgrade or find some more older brushes to restore with fairly good knots. To be honest I lean more towards the well kept older brushes because it makes me wonder about these brushes and did they give somebody else years of pleasure.

Any and all thoughts would be appreciated.

Best Espresso machine under $150

Let me start by saying that I am using the term 'best' loosely.

My wife and I have been using a Cuisinart coffee maker for the past few years. She really like the ease of it and I could take it or leave it. Well, it no longer works(fuse or something), and I would like to get my wife(and I) a Espresso machine for Christmas. I know its a few months early but if I start looking now I may find a great deal.

We both enjoy Latte's, Cappuccino's, Espresso's etc.......and we arent all that fancy when it comes to coffee but we do love our coffee :)

I figured I would get an espresso machine because my wife goes crazy when we are at her parents and her father in law makes us espresso and lattes using his Saeco espresso machine. I think he has the Incanto Deluxe or something very similar....and well they are waaay out of our price range.

I need some suggestions on what would be a great first espresso machine. We would use it a couple times in the morning and a couple times after work I am sure. So it will get used quite a bit. A steam/froth thingy would be great if it was part of it, but not a deal breaker.

Thanks guys, I searched the thread its its amazing the set-ups you guys have.

Cheers

Best blade for head shaving

I have now been shaving my head six days a week for two months. I've discovered that while head shaving has a lot of similarities to face shaving, I think one area where it is very different is in what blades work best. I understand that even among face shavers, the choice of blade is very personal and what gives one guy a BBS can tear another guy's face to shreds. But I'd like to hear from the head shavers out there, what's your blade of choice?

When I get a handful of replies or more, I'm going to order a small box of each and try them all! I was recommended Feathers by a barber, and they seemed great at first, but the second shave on one blade seems noticeably duller than the first, and it seems to take a lot of work (WTG, XTG, ATG, extensive clean-up phase) to get a BBS on the first shave. On the second shave I have to settle for an imperfect shave or spend way too much time and end up with a bit of burn.

The first five unique responses will get a PM from me and I will send you a five pack of your favorite blade! If you recommend more than one your post won't count.

Thanks everybody!

*edit: feel free to recommend feather if it really is your fave.

Spinster Sister Co

Hi

:001_smileWas in Estes Park yesterday and a shop had Spinster Sisters Co hygiene products. Noticed a puck of Sandalwood shaving soap. The proprietor of the shop went on and on about how her son just loves this shaving soap. Naturally I had to buy one ($11). They also had some Spinster Sisters Co "kits" with an enamel mug, VDH brush and soap for $40.

Now for the rest of the story...

Tried it this morning.

:001_huh:#1 - no aroma. Smells like a plain tallow soap. Huh? Their web site claims it is 100% vegan. (Base ingredients - Olive, coconut, apricot, argan, castor, and sustainable palm oils, shea butter, glycerin, and bentonite clay. plus aromas)

:mad3:#2 - no lather. Guess it really is vegan. Tried various ways of getting it to lather to no avail. Got lots and lots of bubble bath suds. Dry, wet, bowl, palm, face, all the same results.

#3 - horrible shave. Yep, I was silly enough to try it anyway. Gotta be fast, "Lather" was disappearing on one side of my face while applying "lather" to the other side. Needless to say it was like dragging a rake across my face. Next two passes I switched to Vulfix to salvage things.

I have nothing against vegans, but why is ever vegan product I've tried, shaving or otherwise, next to lousy? Gotta get a better product if ya wanna convert the masses!

OK, there has been a lot of discussion about the RazoRock Diamond-Like Coating Prototype Stainless Steel Stealth Slant in the ItalianBarber vendor thread, but I thought since the razors have shipped, and today is the day when many brothers (sadly, probably not me) will be getting them, I could try to start an "official" anticipation thread. The idea being this will be the place everyone can post pictures, un-boxing, thoughts, mini-reviews, hopes, dreams, nightmares and anti-government manifestos.

This is not the place to complain about ItalianBarber's prices, policies, release schedule, shipping methods, or Joe's recent haircut. (Guys, he already knows about it, OK? Just try to ignore it, and be sure to look him in the eyes when you're talking to him. Don't worry, it'll grow back!) <--(Author's Note: This attempt at humor may hit very close to home, or it may be hilariously inaccurate, as I have never seen Joseph in person.)

Also, I'm really hoping the nickname "The Paperweight" catches on for the razor. It isn't taken, and if that isn't what Joe wanted it to be called, he shouldn't have put it in the product description.

Looking to sell a bottle of Santa Maria Novella Lavender aftershave splash. Its been used a few times. I would say there is about 85% to 90% remaining. You can see the level in the pictures. $45 shipped CONUS. If my price is out of line, please put me in my place. :001_smile

The only trades I would consider would be Semogue brushes and Fine aftershaves (1st release and 3rd release only). $$$ can be added either way to even out the value.

Finished my first restore, a butterscotch Vulfix (I think)

You may have seen a couple of threads that I started over the past month or so. I have been asking for your guys advice on my first brust restoration. You have been a massive help and I wouldn't have been able to do it without all of you helping me, so thank you.

In this thread I thought I would show what I used and a little step by step of what I did, which may help others with their first restores.

It has been tricky and every step I have had to take a step back and ask a question and look into it. First what knot size, how to remove the knot and with what tools.

So I bought a Dremel and a Dremel workstation, not just for brush restorations.

Firstly I cut the knot off as close to the base that I could. Then using a hand held vice to clamp the handle I drilled a pilot hole into the knot. I was amazed at how much soap dust came flying out of it, it smelt like old man.

Then I used a Dremel 115 bit to clear out all of the hair and glue. It took a while, I didn't want to take too much off the edges and I didnt want to go too deep either.

image.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpg

The next step was to see if the knot fit into the handle, it did, hurray! But I couldn't get it to sit further into the handle.A couple more questions later and It was clear that the handle had to be widened to accommodate the knot sitting lower.

For this I used the 600 grit Dremel sand drum. Again going slowly and constantly checking to see how the knot would sit.

The hole had to be widened a fair bit, more than I expected but that was a good thing as I originally thought that I had gone to deep into the handle.

It all worked out and the knot is set in there and looking great.

The knot is a TGN 22mm Finest Badger, set to a 50mm loft.

Again thanks to you guys for all the advice.

Keeping Your Pipe Lit - Basics for Brown Leaf Seedlings (BBLS)

Welcome to the Second installment of Basics for Brown Leaf Seedlings

Keeping Your Pipe Lit

One of the most common issues a new pipe smoker may encounter is the inability to keep the dang thing lit.

Usually that first attempt goes something like this;

1. Acquire new pipe (Ain't she beautiful?)

2. Acquire fresh tobacco (The stuff in this jar labled Captain's Blend smells good, so does this Irish Rover. So you blend this yourself? Cool. I'll take some.)

3. Take fresh tobacco and stuff in in new pipe (This thing doesn't hold very much, I need to squeeze some more in there)

4. Put fire to pipe

5. puff puff puff puff puff puff (these are big clouds of smoke)

6. Remove fire from pipe

7. puff puff (this is pretty cool)

8. puff (small wisps of smoke)

9. Relight; puff puff puff puff puff puff puff puff puff puff

10. puff...puff

11. Out again

12. TAMP!

13. Relight; puff puff puff puff puff puff puff puff puff puff puff puff puff puff puff puff puff puff puff puff

14. (Is this supposed to hurt this much?)

15. Out again ( What the Hells Bells!?!)

16. THIS PIPE SUCKS!

Let's start over

1 Read Buying a Briar Pipe to make sure the pipe you are starting out with is serviceable.

2 Those big jars of tobacco in the pipe shop, and any fresh tins you open, are probably WAAAY too moist. Take a pinch worth and lay it out to dry for 30 minutes. Don't have that kind of time? Set it under a gooseneck lamp for 5 minutes.

3. Fill your pipe with less tobacco than you think you need. There are various methods to filling your pipe and you may use different ones depending on the type of tobacco or the shape of your pipe so try a couple and see what works for you. A few you can try are; The 3 step method, The Swirl Method, The Frank Method.

Also feeding a pipe cleaner down the stem into the bowl and then filling will keep the draft hole clear.

4. Ignore Herr Frank and use a match or soft flame lighter. Not a torch.

5. Perform the Charring Light this is an initial light you're looking for the top layer of tobacco to burn and start to rise.

6. Tamp down (gently, don't push) the tobacco that has risen. Just compress this top layer

7 Relight, and take short puffs. You are only trying to ignite the top layer not all the tobacco inside the pipe.

8 Puff often, but not too often. The goal is just to keep the ember lit, not have a roaring fire.

9 Tamp occasionally. The goal is to keep just the top layer of ash compressed, but not the unburnt layers underneath. Use just the weight of the tamper. Not your He-Man strength, not even your girly man strength, just the tamper's weight.

If the pipe does go out that's ok, it will. Even the seasoned pipe guys have to relight, it's just part of the experience.

If your tongue starts to hurt STOP that's not what is supposed to happen.

Practice. Just like anything else, you will develop your own style and rhythm but that takes some experience. Sit back, Relax, and Enjoy your new pipe.

Knife handle fix?

Hi all,

I wasn't sure whether I should post this in razor restorations, here or perhaps in the cooking area but my knife handle came off tonight (half of it). Feel free to move this if you feel it's in the wrong place.

I'm thinking a two part epoxy glue to put it back together and thought it best to get some advice first.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what would be a good repair method?

Advice much appreciated,

What ONE thing to get from the US?

My sister-in-law stays in the US and is coming to visit us next month. She's been kind enough to ask me what I would like to get from there.

Normally she would bring me a decent shirt or a T-shirt (nothing very expensive), so the budget should be around $30-40, right? In that budget, what should I ask her to get me? She'll be carrying a lot of luggage, so I don't wnt to burden her with heavy or voluminous packages.

With these constraints, what suggestions can you guys offer? I don't want to get any soaps or creams since good creams are available in abundance in India.

Home brewers Readers Digest

Hello, being a newbie here. I was wondering if we have any homebrewers in the forum. I like to spark a thread of new beer flavor profile. Types of styles and what you have currently fermenting or carbonating. Maybe even a beer share.

Fermenting

1. Brown ale made with nutmeg and Panela(salvadorean Crude Sugar)

2. Single hop Ipa with Nugget

3. Ipa with Panela Nugget and Citra

Future beer

Red ale with Jamaica(flower from central america)

Cream ale with Banana and anise

So what do you have in your den.

What DE do I buy now?

I've been wet shaving for 50+ years now, and I haven't worried too much about what razor or blade, etc that I used.

Just as long as I looked clean and tidy was OK.

But, having read a few threads on this forum I realise that maybe I should get 'into' my shaving a bit more.

Currently using a Muhle R89 Grande (I enjoy using that large handle, not happy with dinky little, wispy handles).

I also use a vintage barley corn Gillette (but, it has that dinky wee handle!).

Tried a Goodfella (made here in New Zealand), but it too has a dinky handle, and the open comb was a bit of a let down. So, sold that off, and now looking for that magical 'something'.

Just want to get a wee bit more bite than the Gillette or Muhle give (ie. a wee bit more 'shave' than I'm getting now).

(I've tried various blades and sort of settled on Feather, and Derby)

I'm thinking of either a Merkur 34C HD (Hefty) $70NZ, or a Merkur Futur $120NZ.

Remember that we probably don't have the full choice of items over here either.

What can anyone suggest, or are my two new choices OK anyway?

Thanks for your help and comments.

Regards to all.

I am ready for a finisher please help

Okay, so I have several Coticles and I like the finished edge that I can get off of them but I have been dreaming of the finished edge that I got from a JNAT that shaverjoe honed for me (the one I have I save for special occasions) . I get a somewhat similar edge when I finish my honing with a Swaty 2-line barber hone but it just is not quite the crisp edge that the JNAT has provided. I really like the edge that I can get off of my Coticules but I feel like there is just a little bit more that I could get from a decent finisher but I don't think I can afford to go down the JNAT rabbit hole. What I want is to find an affordable finisher that can provide a similar edge to a JNAT, is there such a thing?

Thought I would share the initial pre use lather test of my latest mixture. Here we have; 1/3 bar Aloe goats milk soap, 1/3 regular Dove cream bar, 1/3 Mysore Sandal soap, Copha, (slice 5 cm thick), 2 desert spoons pure dripping, 1 desert spoon coconut oil (cold pressed),1 heaped teaspoon of Lanolin and finally 2 cap fills of Glycerine. Left to set over night. Feels slightly rubbery, but some vigorous bowl lathering I got this result. Pretty pleased and was a lot of fun. Only regret is my local health food shop had no Indian Sandalwood oil to use as frag. Used a Windsor boar brush.

Gillette NEW replate

I'd like to give a shout out to RazorPlate for really fine service.

I had settled on a Gillette NEW LC as my daily shaver, but it was one of those with the gold finish half on and half off, making it look pretty grungy. I thought about buffing it down to the brass/copper base, but I much prefer a silver finish. One problem: The cap had a very deep scratch that even the best replate would not hide, or so I thought.

I decided I could live with the scratch, so off it went to Chris for a nickel replate. He emailed me when he received it and said, yes, it was unlikely the gouge would come out because of its depth, but he'd do what he could. I wasn't really sure what to expect because this is my first experience with replating.

After he was finished, he emailed me and said he was able to do better than he thought. I got the razor back yesterday and the scratch is all but gone! I can just about make it out if I put it under bright light and put on my reading glasses.

Chris said that he was able to mostly fill in the scratch by first replating the cap in copper before doing the final coat of nickel. The whole thing looks really nice. I'm surprised how bright it is. I can't imagine how rhodium can be much brighter.

The charge for the added copper plating: Free.

I'm not much of a photographer, so these pix don't really do it justice. I sincerely wish I had taken "before" pictures so you could see the transformation, but unfortunately it didn't occur to me.

Needless to say, I recommend RazorPlate.

Turkey, check. Cherry wood, check. Brine, check. 22.5" Weber kettle, check.

I'm getting ready to revisit my most horrible failure and one of my prime triumphs...Turkey on the Weber grill. It's sort of a warm up for Thanksgiving.

Had a major T-Day disaster that had it's roots in a bird that was still frozen at the core. I've also done a couple that have had rave reviews.

With November just around the corner, maybe it's time for the wise old heads here to once again talk Turkey. Roasted, smoked, grilled, fried, or smoked? Brined or not? Stuffed or not?

Any Kettle Turkey tips from the old pros? My basic plan is indirect heat, modified minion, soaked cherry wood chunks, brined bird (frozen, 13.8 pounds). Put the bird in the fridge this morning, Sunday cook. No injecting, just a Canola oil rubdown before it goes in.

I'm tempted to actually grill a spatchcocked bird, but not this go around. Maybe next time.

What I didn't post was that after 3 shaves, the top wood rim of the replacement American cracked (see picture). Unfortunately I had to go back to Bernd and explain what happened.

Again Bernd was great. He told me to send this brush back and he explained that the crack, unfortunately was an occurrence that this model was experiencing every so often. Bernd offered to again replace the brush but I expressed some concern about the crack possibly happening again.

Bernd offered me a different approach/solution which I accepted. He refunded me both shipping costs that I incurred with the returns and as a replacement he gave me:

Considering their used condition and base prices I'd be expecting around $250 for the lot, but since that seems overly high, $200 will take the lot. Feel free to shoot me a pm if you think the price is too high. Price includes shipping CONUS. Outside the US, I'll have to take a look into the logistics of shipping, but I'll certainly consider it. Lastly, if you are in RI or Southeastern CT, I'd be willing to drop it off for you.

Although I am still a newbie, I think I have found my favorite shave soap scent to date: Strop Shoppe Baker Street with Tallow. The description of the scent reads, "a blend of juniper and jasmine, supported by a bold base of bergamot and patchouli."

So, I am looking for a cologne or aftershave to match. With the help of Google, I found a cologne called Burberry for men that has a very similar description. Before I jump the gun, I wanted to see if anyone has tried this cologne:

New guy here

Well I'm going to venture off in to the vintage

wet shaving world.

Lots of fond memories watching grandpa shave as a kid.

Now I wish I would of picked his brain for tips. (R.I.P. Abuelo Mario)

Going to visit grandma this week (she's 95) and try to

locate some of his old razors

Great site here , I've been researching for a few weeks:thumbup1:

I was a gillette sensor cartridge user for about 18 years.

(they mailed it to me in 1992)

The last few years I've been using a Norelco electric.

This is what I've gathered up so far.

Also have a Weber Bulldog enroute.

Hopefully I don't turn my neck in to ground beef:laugh:

Straight [WTT/WTS] Multiple Straights, Barber Hones

I need to clear out more space so selling off some more straights and a couple of barber hones. Any questions don't hesitate to ask. All my prices include USPS 2-day priority flat rate shipping. All straights will be honed and "Shave Ready" to my standards prior to shipping. I put shave ready in quotes because as well all know it generally varies from person to person. Here is what I use to hone these blades; Bevels are set using a Chosera 800x, then either a vintage pike coticule or LPB coticule will be maxed out using dilucot method. Per request I can either stop here if you want a coti edge otherwise I finish each blade on one of several thuringians (Light green bout, YG/B combo, Blue Droescher, LG) and finally stropped with 60 laps on leather. I can also go CrOx per request prior to hitting the leather. All will be shipped passing the HHT and then sterilized and coated with light mineral oil.

I have 4 blades that need scales so besides anything of interest that is offered in trade I am also interested trading for scales for the blades I have that need them. Paypal only. Also give me a few hours to respond if you don't get a message back immediately as I work nights so daytime is usually sleeping hours for me.

OMOR 1400 11/16": Hollow ground and worked spine. Scales are not original so back of heel (not the edge) rests on spacer. Really cool looking piece. Asking $80 pics: http://ift.tt/WFMOCA

Morris Red Imp 132 Wedge 11/16":
Ita nice little wedge. Original Red Imp scales. Gave me a silent smooth shave. Asking $60 pics: http://ift.tt/1CPfYR1

Fredrick Reynolds 5/8":
a very nice Fredrick Reynolds 5/8" full hollow. All original. Great Sheffield shaver. Asking $55 pics: http://ift.tt/WFMN1p

Fredrick Reynolds 7/8" Prince Albert: A near wedge 7/8". It has original prince albert etching fully intact on the blade. The scales were left original and are secured but have a small chip missing near the pivot pin. A very cool piece. Asking $100 Pics: http://ift.tt/1CPfYR3

Filarmonica JMP 14 Especiale: NOTE this one has some tarnish in the gold wash and some staining on the back of the blade. It's 7/8" and shaves great but does have cosmetic flaws. Because of the flaws I'm slightly torn on this one. Asking $150 pics: http://ift.tt/1CPfWsi

Thiers Issard 69 Frameback: A big frameback with original patina left. An older TI for sure. Asking $65 pics: http://ift.tt/1CPfWsk

Simon Cutlery 5/8": A cool little german hollow ground. Pure shaver. Asking $40 pics: http://ift.tt/WFMOT0

Libby Harlow & Co 7/8": A german made half hollow 7/8". Very cool Plymouth Rock etching still intact. This is a big german blade and shaves like a dream. Asking $100 pics: http://ift.tt/1CPfZ7j

Krusius Brothers 67 13/16": A nice german hollow with beautiful patina. Asking $50 pics: http://ift.tt/WFMPX0

Wade and Butcher "for Gentlemans' use" 7/8": A very cool piece that I'm up in the air about selling or keeping. Part of the maker stamp is faded but otherwise this piece is in great shape. Left original scales to maintain character as well as patina. This would polish up quite nice however if thats your thing. A hollow grind and spike point. Asking $110 pics: http://ift.tt/1CPfWsm***sold pending***

Genco 5/8"-11/16" with case: A nice american made Genco razor. Shaves well. Measures between 5/8" and 11/16" round point. Asking $50 pics: http://ift.tt/WFMOT3

Ontario Cutlery 5/8": Really cool striped scales. French point. Asking $45 pics: http://ift.tt/WFMPX2

Torrey 5/8" "the artist": 5/8" i'd say between half and 3/4 hollow. Asking $45 pics: http://ift.tt/WFMP9m

John Buehler 5/8" "20th century": Buehler...buehler....Heavy toe ware. Asking $25 pics: http://ift.tt/1CPfWIE

Carborundum 118s Barber hone: This guy looks brand new. Box in amazing condition. Asking $20 pics: http://ift.tt/1CPfZ7B

C-Mon double sided barber hone: Box in great shape as is original paper work. Hone looks like it was practically never used (don't mind my shadow in the pics oops). A great hone for touch ups to keep in your bathroom. Asking $45 pics: http://ift.tt/WFMPXa

Again, any questions feel free to ask and i'll make sure all straights are honed stropped before sending out.

Thanks.

Almost ready to whack my whiskers - but hunkerin' for a honer

Not sure if this is the best place for this, also posted it in the Newbie Section. Got my first three razors cleaned up and now I need to get them shave ready. A Beau Brummel Wedge, KC Seelbach Buddy Jr. and a Worcester Razor Co.

Looking for someone interested in honing to shave ready. Please PM me, or reply here and I can contact you. I'm in Georgia, US. Thanks ahead of time. I've seen some recommendations in a few of the sub forums, but wanted to put this out there for anyone particularly interested, had some time in the coming week, etc. Oh, and I'm not looking for free either, I'm Just eager to get shaving. Now why I couldn't I go the smart route and buy a shave ready razor? What can I say, I like fiddling with stuff and could not pass the chance to clean up a few auction site finds that appealed to me, for no good reason.

All the edges appear in reasonably good shape with no notable chips or cracks, from my novice inspection. The Worcester is in the best condition edge wise, cleanly took hair off my arm, but not ready for the task of beard reduction. Happy to PayPal. Mods, if this post would be better elsewhere, please move it accordingly.

Here they are after some time on the buffing wheel with progressive compounds.

I just wanted to post this as I like this product as an aftershave balm and i think it has good ingredients in it. I see very little mentioned on it and I bought it at whole foods for $9 and change. Here is a link to the products page: http://ift.tt/1wJEWRe

Sturdy Umbrella

So my title seems like an oxymoron, because every umbrella I've ever owned has been a flimsy piece of junk. Especially those collapsible ones. Does anyone have any experience with a solid umbrella? I'm looking for something that wouldn't look out of place bringing into a professional setting.

Super Speed "V3" Question(s)

I recently picked up these two "V3" Super Speeds off eBay. I got the right-side-up one for $32 and the upside-down for $21. But the value (or lack thereof) is not my question...

What I'd like to know is why the difference in the orientation of the date codes?

Was one a mistake and the other the intended orientation? If not a mistake, what was the logic behind the two? And which came first?

Any and all information or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Are you a Handyman that Can?

Woke up this morning, when into the kitchen, filled the coffee pot with water. Then I notice I was standing in a pool of water. I said, "what the..." So, I looked in the cabinet under the sink and it was wet with water. Great, just what I needed this morning. It seems my garbage disposal sprung a leak somewhere inside the unit and was dripping water from the underside. Went to check my paper work for the warranty...couldn't find it. So, I took down the serial number and entered it into the Emerson website under Badger Disposal. The warranty was for 3 years. Not bad really, but I bought and installed it in 2008. So, I'm off to Home Depot. I found the same model(only difference was 1/2hp vs. 3/4hp) and bought it. All dimensions where the same so there was very little fussing with the dishwasher drain line and the sink drain. I had it installed in about one and half hours. Works like a charm. I guess I'm a half decent handyman. :w00t:

P.S. On a side note. The last time I install a garbage disposal in 2008 I caulked the inside perimeter of the cabinet. So there was no water damage. :biggrin1:

Old J. Stevens .22 Question

Hey guys,

I have been looking at an old .22 my grandmother gave my father a while ago that I never got around to shooting. It's a J. Stevens Arms Crackshot 26 and it's in pretty darn good condition considering how old it is. I wasnt sure on what I could shoot out of it because my dad thought you could only shoot shorts through it but it says it's a 22 Long Rifle, I know J. Stevens invented the 22lr cartridge plus I've seen others confirm it does shoot lr so I'm not too concerned about that.

What I am concerned about is that the lever seems a little loose and when the hammer is cocked does not remain up. It just drops right down opening the action. I was wondering if this was typical and if I can just hold it up when firing or if something is broken/loose. Otherwise it seems good. Bore is clean and the hammer fires with each trigger pull like expected. Any expertise is appreciated. Thanks again guys.

Newbie check in

Hello everyone,

I'm new to DE wetshaving and thought I'd introduce myself. I've been trying to teach myself the appropriate methods for several months now but I'm realizing I have a lot to learn. Right now I'm using a Merkur HD (I think) ... Taylor of Old Bondstreet Sandlewood soap, Musgo Real Lime Oil soap (for prep), Astra platinum blades and a Simpson Wee Scott brush.

I'm probably doing something wrong. I'm finding that the Wee Scott is leaving my face pretty raw after a lather application. I'm thinking I should have chosen a different first brush (maybe a small brush isn't such a good beginner brush?). After reading the section in this forum titled Choosing Your First Brush, I'm wondering if I should go with a Boar brush as a first beginner brush?

What do you think? What are some recommendations for a first Boar brush?

Also I don't know how to break in a Boar brush but I'm sure I'll be learning that here as this forum appears to have a ton of helpful information.

As you can tell, I have a lot of questions. I look forward to learning from all of you!

Try Redken shampoo and conditioner

Several months ago I decided I would try a salon type shampoo and conditioner instead of the typical drug store products. Cost was an issue because you can actually pay $20 for an 8oz bottle of shampoo ($40 for conditioner and shampoo). I read an enormous amount of verbiage on the net regarding the voluminous amount of mens hair products. I decided to try Redken “Go Clean Daily Care Shampoo” and “Finish Up Daily Weightless Conditioner”. These products are recommended for those who wash their hair daily. Both of these come in a 10oz and a 33.8oz bottle. The 10oz bottle of shampooI cost $12.00 and the 33.8oz cost $20.50. The 10oz bottle of conditioner cost $12.50 and the 33.8 bottle cost $22.50. I tried the 10oz first to see if it was worth the price and what it did for my hair. The shampoo and conditioner worked well on my hair even though I will never be on the cover of GQ. But what I liked about it was not necessarily what was in it but what was not in it. Both products appeared not to have all of the chemicals and water that drug store products have. In addition, both products appear to be much more concentrated which means they will last longer that the typical drug store products. The 10oz bottles lasted me one month. I then purchased the 33.8oz bottles of Redken on June 1 and I am sure they will last me well into October. So, the Redken will cost me approximately $100 a year where an 8oz $20 product would cost me $600 per year. Also, the place where I purchased them from had a sale last month and each of the 33.8oz bottles cost me $12.50 a piece. Needless to say i stocked up. Redken is a good product and if you pay attention you can get them for a great price.

First (completed) SE Shave!

I completed my first SE shave today!

I used an Ever-Ready with a CVS blade (American Safety Razor). Great shave! I had to take my time around the chin and jawline and there are a couple little spots under my nose I needed to go back after but otherwise, success!

It went much better than the partial shave last week when I endure what I can safely say was the second most uncomfortable shaving experience I have ever had and stopped after less then one pass! Against everything I read I started that shave with a razor blade I had in the garage... It was bad enough that I considered not trying it again. But I got proper blades at the pharmacy and WAY better!

I look forward to using this from time to time!

Horse and badger Vie Long

Hi gents

I have been using my 14486 (olive wooden) handle Vie Long brush for a week now.

Well guys this is simply one of the best brushes I tried and I tried a lot.

Great lather, easy lather and superb face lathering....at affordable price.

Most of all look for something new and different to buy here (do we.....?) so give it a try !

For good order sake, I have of course no interest at all in Vie Long. I'm just a customer.
