Rex Supply Co. Ambassador Adjustable Stainless Steel Razor

Just saw this new razor from Razor Emporium. An SS ahjustable 1-6. I guess the inspiration came from a Vintage Gibb razor.
They just went up for sale today.
Looks nice in the photos. Looked for a review but found none.

"Original" Old Spice ingredients?

I don't know if this has been posted to the forum, but, thought I'd get it up here so those who are interested can enjoy it. Was poking around the web and stumbled upon this site in England, apparently.

PIF, turning a negative into a positive.

Up for PIF is a Gillette Old Type single ring razor.
It has been "Factory Revamped"
It has a cracked handle. The head is in great shape.
If I keep it every time I use it I will get mad thinking of getting burned by the vendor.
Opinions on seller disclosing faults
So I would like to PIF it to a good home. Then we can turn this into a positive for somebody and I can move on...

Blade Sampler Review with big thanks to Grundi - Claus

So I was home on days off and received this awesome PIF from Grundi. Not only did he send me so many different great blades to try but he had to send them international post!

Now I have to admit I am a Astra SP fan. However all the other blades are totally new to me! So I will do my best to put them all through their paces and see how they perform. I brought with me to camp my ATT H1+2, R41, Progress (just came in mail, never used yet) and shavette.
I had an awesome straight shave before I...

The purpose of this thread is to serve as a place for friends of Dark Holler Design Works and Paladin Shaving to drop in and shoot the breeze about anything and everything within bounds of the Badger & Blade Terms of Usage. It doesn't matter whether you own a Paladin shaving brush or intend ever to own one, as long as you're not here to 2) disparage us, our products, or how we go about making and offering them, 2) disparage anyone else, or 3) promote someone else's products.

House of Knives dropping Taylor of Bond Street shave creams

I was in my closest brick and mortar vendor for TOBS. It's a Canadian chain called House of Knives. The manager told me that they were no longer able to sell TOBS in Canada. He said that there was an internal memo that indicated one of the ingredients used was no longer allowed to be imported and they were pulling the line. Has anyone else heard about this yet? I really like the TOBS creams that I have, and it's just going to cost me more for shipping now.

First shave with second razor

Today I received my second razor, a gillette slim. I currently use a merkur 34c. I decided to bowl lather some TOBS sandalwood since that usually makes the easiest shave for me. The only way I can describe it is by saying it was different than what I am used to but enjoyable. I learned razors all behave differently, much like soaps and creams. I started on 3 but bumped it up to a 4. The caps on the sides made it different as well as the size of the head. I like how it feels in the...

I am in search of some new shoes to wear around the house. Currently, I wear crocs, which are easy to get on and off, but they do not support or cup my heels of my feet. I have CP and my left side is 3.25 shorter than my right side. I normally wear orthopedic shoes when I go out, but I would have to constantly wear socks and keep my inserts in all of the time.

The "Dirty South" Taco

The LOML and I recently returned from a trip to Niagara Falls and Buffalo, NY (scenic pics in The Great Outdoors). Had to share this one here. Went to Lloyd's Taco Factory in Buffalo and had the the Dirty South taco - fried chicken, waffle (well, a waffle cone), bacon aioli, and maple syrup. If you find yourself in Buffalo, get thee to Lloyd's!

In order to get out of the oppressive heat and humidity, the LOML and I took a trip up to Niagara Falls and Buffalo to see the sites and do some hiking. What a fantastic trip! The power of the falls is humbling and we did several hikes that brought us down into gorges and close to water. We also toured a Frank Lloyd Wright house that was a 5 minute walk from our Airbnb, went to "Food Truck Tuesday", and visited the Albright-Knox Art Gallery.

Hard time affording a vintage.

Greetings gentlemen!
I stumbled upon this site around one year ago, when I was searching for DE shaving after hearing DE was seeing a come-back. I've been a long time lurker but I rarely contribute to posts.

So I bought the weishi razor (superspeed clone my beginner's razor) from china and after a year of light shaving it's given up and broke.
After searching through the forums I noticed the love for vintage razors, they are well built, built to last.
I searched everywhere in my country but...

TTO doors binding

Hey all, picked up a Gillette Fatboy with date code G 2 this weekend. It has an issue though. It appears to my untrained eye that the safety bars on both sides have been squeezed together which is causing a bind in the door opening mechanism. I've attached a couple images along with it next to a SS to see how the doors catch as well. What are my options with it?

I assume it could be bent back out if it could be done evenly across the bar. I've also considered notching the bar where the...

Well, thanks to the kindness and generosity of our very own rabidus, I got a chance to try out the Streamline, probably the most beloved/sought after SE razor of them all. My horse is shedding

My favorite brush is a custom made wood handle with a horse knot. This is my daily driver and it means a lot as it was a gift from a member here.

The issue is it is shedding. By shedding I mean it is losing at least 7 hairs a day. This has been going on for a few weeks now.

Is there anything I can do to slow this down or is this just a death spiral?

Any ideas what this is?

So I never bothered to buy a bowl to hold my soap. I have been using a rubbermaid container. The top part is normal, but today I happened to look at the bottom of the container and noticed there are yellowish crystals formed at the bottom. Does anyone know what this is? Is the soap still safe to use? Should I go ahead and just buy a bowl to hold the soap in? The bottom part is also not exposed to air, since it does not fully fit into the container. Gillette NEW Costum handle

I like the Gillette NEW razor and my main complaint is the handle, it always felt light to me and because of that I always got a poorly balanced feeling when using the razor.

The handle is hollow so it can be made heavier. I did my reading and mostly people use lead beads the place into the handle. I did come across a recommendation to use Tungsten brads which are heavier then lead.

Instead of using beads I purchased a 100mm Tungsten road for 10$ from ebay and used a Dremel rotary tool to...

It seems that I've hit a wall. Nearly every shave is giving me irritation. Not to mention the fact that for some reason blades don't sit in my de89 properly. They seem to want to go in slightly off angle. And even when they're straight more of the blade is exposed on one side.

Hello,

found this on the flea market, in parts, on closer examination the center screw holding the doors in place was missing, the handle and the ring under the adjuster was cracked, but for 30 Cents, who cares.

Luckily Wizamet used the same half screw as the Gillette Slim twist, so I salvaged the missing part from my stash.

The handle could have been repaired but is quite boring, so replaced it with a broken fountain pen and repainted the dial.

Scale pinning 2.0

After following some great advice from others here I pinned my second set of scales. Actually it was a transplant...the gold dollar had cracked scales and the Russian razor was bad steel- in this case two wrongs made a right!

This time not only are the scales tight and the blade centered, the pivot pin i did is aesthetically much better and more polished I think.

Soap lot - LASS, WSP, Soap Commander, Stirling

Going through a remodel and I've been tossing stuff right and left. Here's a lot with great soaps that I just don't use much:

Los Angeles Shaving Soap Topanga Fougere 4.5oz - one shave's sample was removed
Stirling Black Ice 5.8oz - 98%
Soap Commander Honor - 95%
WSP Rustic Shaving Soap Spring Rain - 80%
WSP Formula T Citrus Blast (the tin says rustic, but it's the tallow version they had a tin mix-up on -- there's a "FT" sticker on the back) - 90%

Facing a dilemma and in need of advice.

Hi, new to the forum...
I recently have been considering starting to use a safety razor after a long and bad relationship with shaving. Basically I started shaving in the military, age 18, beforehand I grew a beard. I would show up for every morning roll call with the randomly placed nick on my face still dripping blood, and quite quickly realized cartridge razors are not for me. I endured that to the point when I was allowed to grow a beard due to the nature of my unit. Since then I kept a...

Well today I decided to take out my recently arrived Asylum Evolution XL version 2. I had the version 1 but after a chat with Phil at Bullgoose Shaving, he mentioned to me that Asylum was coming out with a newer more refined version of the Evolution so I thought to myself maybe I can try and sell mine and get the newer one. Emailed Phil and asked him to set one aside for me when they arrive at his store and he confirmed he would. Don't get me wrong I liked the version 1 that I had but it...

Blast from the past: W&B Masonic straight

Since Photobucket is being greedy, I'm reposting these images to test out a new image hosting service. Let's see how it does.

A mid-1800s Wade & Butcher 8/8 (I think. Maybe a 7/8?) with acid/photo-etched Masonic symbols on the blade. No Arrow & cross maker's mark. No country of origin, so it's prior to 1890. Does anyone have a way to narrowing down when this might have been made?

It's been around 100 degrees in my shop for several weeks now, too hot to get much done. A monsoon blew in yesterday and brought some cooler temps so I was finally able to make another brush. My First Injector Razor...

Hopefully, is on the way.:) I purchased form Ebay and still awaiting the tracking number.:) In the meantime, I purchased some Schick injector blades to have at the ready.:)

Which leads me to this question:

How does one travel with an injector razor if a blade has been installed and you have several shaves left on it? Is a cover available? (I googled and came up with nothing).

Or, do you simply remove the blade and drop the razor and blades in your Dopp bag?

Speaking of blade removal,...

The few things I have learned in 45 years cooking

Truth is, I am a slow learner. But after 45 years of cooking dinner, there are a few things I have figured out:

You don't need a big block of knives. A chefs knife, a utility knife, a paring knife, and a serrated knife will take care of most everything. If you like, add a cleaver or a filet knife. Keep em sharp. Oh, and a pair of heavy duty scissors for all the times that works better than a blade.

Likewise, you do not need a 16 piece cookware set. Better to have a few pieces of quality...

Resurgence of Small Business Retail or Just an Anomaly?

I live in the Baton Rouge, Louisiana area and over the past few years I have noticed that a lot of small niche market businesses are popping up and doing well. For example, we have stores that sell loose leaf tea, flavored cooking oils, spices, artisan soap (one brand not several), coffee roasters, stores that carry local farmer market goods, etc. Don't get me wrong...the big box stores still rule and these small business niche market retail spaces are still much more expensive than online...

Ernest Supplies cream

There's been discussion of this company's moisturizer on B&B in the past, but not its cream.
I was in one of my local pharmacies on Friday and saw an open tester, so I asked for (and was given) a sample.
It's actually more of a gel. It looks pearly but rubs on clear. The Ernest website makes it clear that it is not a lathering product.
It has menthol, at a nice medium level, and assorted oils. It claims to do triple duty as pre-shave and aftershave too.

I have to say, it left my face...

New Virginian

Hi Everyone,

I've been reading B&B for a few months now and finally took the plunge into DE shaving. I have been using Proraso green products with a brush and my Mach3, but I got tired of getting ingrown hairs and razor burn. My Maggard MR11 just came in the mail and I'm looking forward to my first shave tomorrow with some Astra SPs!

Sorry, not looking for a trade at this time as I have way too much stuff in my den.

Trying it tomorrow morning. Directions say to cut it 50/50 with water. Does that mean that it's roughly the same strength as espresso?

I usually drink a double-shot of espresso cut with hot water. Americano.

How has this cold-brew method worked for those of you who have tried it?

Strong enough?

Acid reduction as advertised?

I plan to cut it 50/50 and nuke it for the mornings. I like hot coffee.

I have also enjoyed Stirling Orange Chill and Margarittas in the Artic. I am hoping to receive Citricos and Lima-Spice from Eufros next week...

Merkur 1904 CC or OC

I'm looking at buying a Merkur 1904 for my collection. I have heard that the open comb is mild like a tech. With the closed comb Merkur head I know I'm getting a good lower mid range aggressive razor that I like. I already have two new tech's so I'm covered on the mild side for a minute. I've heard that with a steeper angle with the 1904 OC it puts a little bit more aggression in it? Any thoughts on which to get? At this time I can only get one and get the products I need to re-up on.

Is this a discussion we still need to have?

Different razors hold blades in various geometries. We all speak about the difference in blade/razor feel during the instant of shaving, the immediate afterward, and hours following. These can be further attributed to pressure, angle of attack, coefficient of friction due to wetness, slickness re soap suspension, other lubricants as like preshave oils et al. However, there is one aspect of shaving which I 'just' realized also plays into the overall satisfaction of the experience: follicle...

A Gillette That Is Not Encountered Very Often

Today I purchased a very scarce 1924 Pioneer Olympic Set. Scarcer still is the fact that the set I purchased was a special order variation....with an enscribed case that was made by the Gillette factory for the French magazine “L’Auto" (published from 1900-1944). The magazine presented these razor sets as special gifts to their management and famous auto racers of the day.

Being a lover of antique automobiles, as well as Gillettes, I can only but imagine who the auto racer may have been...

Two shaves with the Colonial General in aluminum.....

Rabidus was kind enough to lend me his aluminum Colonial General for a trial, with two different AC blades (Kai Captain Mild and Schick Prolines). I hooked this head up to a UFO Titan Fine L and it makes a great-looking razor with good balance.

My experience with AC-type razors is limited. Years ago I participated in a Cobra pass-around and I liked it OK but didn't really understand all the hype.

Because I used to use Kai double-edge blades a long time ago, I assumed the Kai blade would...

I searched all over the forums here recently while in NYC on business, as well as on other similar sites and came up mostly empty.

In the end I went to Geno's in Greenwich Villiage, Yuri was the wizard behind the blade, it took about 30-40 minutes and cost $35.

Being my very first traditional SE barbershop shave, I have nothing whatsoever to compare it with, but came out of there feeling refreshed, with BBS skin, a slight nick on my neck (that he treated and hid), and really looking good....

I picked up these 3 razors at an auction today and have a few questions about them. The first one is a Hoffritz slant in very nice condition. Stirling Gin & Tonic On the Rocks

When I bought the new Stirling boar brush, I also picked up this soap (along with Baker Street).

I don't yet love the scent. Maybe it's the menthol, but I also have Margaritas in the Arctic and don't detect the same scent there.

In any case, I don't think I have another soap with this much menthol. It's a bit of a smack in the face, cold from the very beginning. Other mentholated soaps seem to be cold after the first lather. But this was cold to me as I built the lather.

Just ordered a Belgian blue from Griffith shaving goods. It says mid range and that's what I'm looking for. So all the natural finishers seem fine but what about a natural for bevel setting. Virtually new backup for my 6S, used for only four shaves. Retail $50 (with or plus shipping, depending on retailer). Difficult to part with, but the Variant is calling me like the Sirens.

With a view to going a little beyond trade parity, I’m throwing in 98 Rockwell blades ($9.99 from Rockwell), a lightly used Omega 10066 boar brush ($9.99 from Italian Barber, currently sold out), and a barely used 1 oz. sample puck of Stirling Piacenza (Acqua di Parma type).

Budget Single Blade Shaving?

I've been a DE shaver for about 10 years, and have never really looked at Single Edge razors. I tried the straight razor path for a bit...but there's a new set of chores that I can do without.

SE shaving seems to be going through a bit of a renaissance lately, so obviously my interest is piqued - but what puts me off is the cost of SE blades. Also, please don't try to sell me on the virtues of putting 40+ shaves onto a blade. I like that at the end of each week, I can dispose of my filthy...

GEM Micromatic Open Comb Razor - MMOC /OCMM

When I shave with a GEM Micromatic Open Comb Razor - MMOC /OCMM, the shave is harsh and not comfortable, though the results (BBS) are excellent - (I have not cut myself, or gotten razor burn using this razor, but the shave is not comfortable, and it is harsh.). I achieve similar excellent shave results (BBS), and the shave IS NOT harsh, and IS comfortable with the following GEM razors: Damaskeene (with the rounded blade door), 1912 (with the flat blade...

WTT/WTS Timeless .68 SB and L&L bandwagon

The Timeless is a .68 SB matte head only I bought about 2 months ago, and only used about 5 or 6 times. I payed $152 shipped I'm wanting $125 shipped or about the same trade value, possible a .95 SB or a RR Wunderbar. The L&L grooming bandwagon has been used 4 or 5 time I would like to trade it for another soap. I am looking for C&S oc soap, Dr Harris Arlington, valobra fougere or maybe Mike's barbershop.
Thank you.

What's Your Favorite G.L. Pease Blend?

Can someone explain this?

I can shave with my shimmed prewar tech or my Merkur Slant using a feather blade and get I nice smooth close shave which will leave my face BBS 10 minutes after I shave.24 hours later my beard will have about the same amount of growth using these 2 razors. Bring in my Gillette OT with a feather and I can feel its much more aggressive and I often get a couple weepers on my neck. After shaving with the OT it will take an hour before my face feels BBS and I can usually go 30 or more hours...

Growing Simpsons Stable

I am the proud new owner of a couple of new Simpsons beauties...they seem to be growing/multiplying in their own...honest.

I started with a 58 in Best, and found that it throughly blew away my Parker "long loft pure badger". The 58 was the definition of luxury to my face, it had tons more backbone, and some scrubbiness.

It takes a lot more cream to make it sing, but once I got that figured out--she really took it up a notch for me. The brush looks to be about three times more dense than...

How often do you guys shave?

I have been experimenting and if I try to shave everyday two certain spots on my neck seem to get irritated. They don't get irritated when I have a couple days growth though. Think it could be just too many passes in that time period? Any suggestions? Just kind of sucks not to be able to shave everyday if I wanted to.

A great cologne match for Stirling Barbershop AS

While out this evening the LOTH needed to stop at Ulta, so I decided to head over to the men's
fragrances. As I am a huge fan of Burberry, I decided to try the new Burberry Brit Rythm. After I sprayed it on the back of my hand and let it "settle" in, I took a sniff and my mind went directly to the sample of Stirling BS AS that I have at home and I thought what a perfect match! So, for those looking for a cologne match to this fine AS from Stirling, you may want to try the Brit Rythm.

Flora Colossus 1st Impression of Lather Bros

Hello all!

Flora

My shave consisted of the soap set and balm by Lather Bros, my shavemac, a Gillette Fatboy on 9/7/5, and a fresh Gillette 7 o clock green.

So I bought this soap and balm set with my wife's money. I preordered on the 18th, shipped on the 25th, delivered on the 28th.

Scent notes are Lavender, Asian Pear, and Cedar. Off the puck, I mainly get that sweet crisp fresh scent of the Asian pear. Think about when you bite into a pear or an...

New Parker Brass TTO for $14.50/Hand-made Badger Brush $13.80

These prices looked attractive to me, so I went for them. Since they total over $22 (around $28), you get free shipping from England, plus a free tube of shaving cream.

The only slight negative for me is that the Parker 52 DE razor is a little too aggressive for me, so I'm learning how to angle it to avoid irritation/cuts. I was surprised to get a brand new brass (not zamak) razor for only $14.50. It's been discontinued and that's probably why you can get it so cheap. It very solidly built,...

Hidden treasures

Hello all,

I'd like to know if any of you have a hidden treasure in terms of shaving soap. I'm thinking of those soaps that are not as well known and don't get much talk, for some unknown reason. I'm very interested in hearing about those brands out there that put out high quality products, yet don't get the recognition they deserve!

Mike from Corona California. " Unfortunately, for most men, this is a chore to be endured, or at best a nuisance." Yea, that's about right. I actually hate shaving only slightly less than the feeling of hair on my face. For 14 years I shaved most days because I was military but now I shave about once a week when my bristles got to the unbearable pint. I use a Braun 360 for the past 11 years and before that I had a couple others. Braun has been the only way I can tolerate shaving because...

Favorite Magazine: G & G

Have you a favorite magazine? One that makes you giddy when it arrives in the mailbox?

For me, it is Garden & Gun. Now, truth is, there isn't much in it which addresses either. Sure, there is the occasional small article about fancy trap guns, but it primarily focuses on BBQ, bourbon, music, crafts, and artists.

The emphasis is the American south, and the writing is simply top notch. G and G is closer to a literary Town & Country than an outdoors publication. And the advertisers certainly...

Gillette Rocket HD Doors Stuck Open

Gents,

I purchased a Gillette Rocket HD off the bay. It was listed as excellent condition, everything works as it should. I received it today, and immediately began to inspect it.

When I began to turn the knob I noticed it was a little tough to turn, but nothing bad. The doors opened, I looked at the inside and all was satisfactory. I went to close the doors and the TTO knob is seized up. Won't budge a bit. The doors are stuck open.

Any ideas on how to get this razor back into action?...

3 expeditions in 6 months time for a new watch

I was a big fan of the Timex expeditions. In fact I've had only one other type of watch in 18 years and I quickly went back to the expedition. I am not easy on my watches and they used to take a licking and keep ticking. Not anymore. I killed one about 6 months ago and that had lasted 2 years. I have been through 3 since then. Knocked one off the sink and broke the crystal, something that never phased the others. Broke the winder on one getting it snagged in a coat, and the third...

1912 vs 1912 Shave off

New Well the shave off is complete. What I found was the 1912 OC for description use only I consider both to be OC , was very close and comfortable
It shaved like a 1912 and a 1914 had a baby ,
The 1912 was great as always very comfortable not as close and she did not sing as much as the OC.
The head on my 1912 is very flat while the OC's head is kinda rounded over and looks to have more of a slant to it.also
the blade exposure is bigger on the 1912
Conclusion after one shave The OC...

Anyone tried the new Zoologist/Chiseld Face Panda soap?

Anyone tried this one yet?

I just received it yesterday and used it for the first time today. The scent is one of the strongest, most heavily scented soaps I've used yet. On a strength-of-scent scale from 1-5, this gets a rock solid 5/5. It's right in my wheel house! To me, it's a very "cologny" scent that reminds me very much of Bleu de Chanel EdP. I rather like it! Too soon to give a review of performance, but I did get a nice shave, no doubt.

Should a gentleman carry a handkerchief ?

Hi Gents,

I have to appeal to your wisdom and ask you this silly question because I believe I would go back to my roots of carrying a handkerchief in my back pocket.

When I was a kid my dad thought me that a true gentleman should always carry a handkerchief and it should be impregnated with your favorite cologne, you would use it in any situation that would be required, like drying your hands or cleaning your clothes if an food/drink accident occurred, but specially if the situation...

Differences in Micromatic Brass and Chrome OC Razors

I've been shaving with SE razors for many years but always cleaned my razors separately, never all at once. I noted yesterday while cleaning my Brass and Chrome OC Micromatics and comparing them, that the Chrome had Dimples on the base plate and the Brass has none, I always wondered why the Brass Micromatic OC was a bit more aggressive than the Chrome OC, I think I've found the reason why. But I forgot to check if there is a difference in blade exposure.
The Chrome does give me a better...

Gem 1912 Beautiful Head Shave but...

I used the Gem 1912 yesterday evening to shave my head. After only one pass, the final result was just so smooth. Nice. Close and comfortable. Really amazing! (I used a new blade). I shaved the back of the neck and obtained the same result.

Then, because I sometimes like to get rid of the extraneous hairs on the chest (not a really a hairy guy), I lathered and ran the razor XTG. I showered, came back out and saw three red lines, where I had shaved, running horizontally. Not really...
