need help with buying my first straight razor and accessories, but overwhelmed

hello everyone,

I have been wet shaving for almost a year with my DE razor and I love it. I am feel I am ready to take the next step and buy my first straight razor. I am sorry that this is probably the 1 millionth post like this but the more research I do, the more I am overwhelmed. I have checked other posts and I have not found one that completely relates to what I am looking for. I live in Canada so its hard to find many other Canadian sites other than fendrihan, classicedge, and menessentials as the exchange rate for the Canadian dollar is terrible right now, but I wouldnt mind buying from an American site if it was a good deal. My max is 200 or so and I would prefer a kit. in terms of brand I am a big fan of TI, but I know they can be very pricey so others brands like Dovo would work as well if it is a good quality and price. Sorry for rambling, but what I am looking for is advise on good sites to go to, good blades to start with, and good quality strops. I know this is very subjective, but all advise is welcomed and the more specific the items and advise, the better, I find, it helps me.

Hard soap allergic reaction ?

Ok, so maybe an oddball question. Has anyone here had reactions to some hard soap(red face/burn) such as(in my case) Muhle/Edwin Jagger, Golddachs, and Williams, and managed to use Tabac successfully without the reaction?
No amount of research has let me narrow down the ingredient(s) causing my reaction, and I'm at a loss trying soaps I can't use. Recently bought Muhle sea buckthorn and I want to like it, but can't use it. I'd like, ideally, to get some feedback from someone who has a similar reaction to similar soaps. I realize this isn't going to be 100% identical to my experience, but I feel like it may help more than the buy and try approach I've been using.
Any comments and advice are appreciated.
I'm open to any suggestions for a hard soap(I don't prefer croaps even though I use one regularly) that will minimize the change of a reaction. I would not have called my skin sensitive until I tried these soaps.

Ordered Clubman cream in a jar and might be mistake.

Lathering cream is the 'slop on with my hand'. On the plus side, smells great. Save for the beach or dry skin, post shave? Haven't tried as pre-shave. Think hand lotion in a jar. I like the scent so much, I'm keeping mine. Keep us posted and have fun.

Finishing off a nice bottle of whiskey always leaves me with a sense of accomplishment but wanting more. It's always worse when it's a bottle that I've gotten from out of country with no hope of getting more.

WTT (SHIPPING FROM/TO CANADA) Whipped Dog 24mm Silvertip, SH, MW and Tim's Soap

Hello there folks!

Until about a month ago, I had never used anything but electric. I actually heard about safety razors a few years ago, I think from Art of Manliness, and it sounded pretty cool. Electrics aren't so bad, but cleaning them is a pain, and they get clogged with hair really easy. Plus, while you don't have to change blades very often, it's super expensive when you do. I thought about switching, but it's just something I never really got around to doing. Also I was afraid that shaving with a safety razor would cut me in the face until my face stopped resembling a face. But I finally decided to bite the proverbial bullet and do it.

First I shaved with a two blade disposable and Barbasol for about a week to get a feel for it with something slightly easier. I researched and watched videos, talked to my barber, and went to a local men's gift shop. I got myself a Merkur 23C, a sampler pack of blades, and some aftershave. It went reasonably well, and while I still get cut here and there, it's all starting to come together. Lately I've been experimenting with different blades, but the thing that brought me here was jar shaving cream. I can't get it to work for me, and I thought I needed some expert advice. You guys seem to know what's up, so I joined and posted over in the shaving cream section.

And we'll see where it goes from here.

Mike's Natural Shaving Soap comments - Lime

I've been using my bar of Mike's Natural Lime Shaving Soap for a little over a month and I thought I would share my experiences (lathering, scents, presentation). The bar (which I selected over the tin 'cause it's a bit cheaper and I prefer ceramic shave bowls) pressed somewhat easily into a small bowl. The bowl has an ample wide mouth to allow the loading of my Omega 10049. With daily use, I fully expect this bar to last me between 3 and 4 months. My thoughts of this nice soap follow:

PRESENTATION My Mike's bar came wrapped in wax paper with a corrugated cardboard wrapped around the wax paper. A wrapper with Mike's branding tied the whole bar together. I really like this presentation. Incidentally, my mailbox smelled like limes for a day (pleasant, to say the least).

FEEL My bar was solid'ish and firm. However, it was soft enough to press into a bowl. The pressing took some effort of my part.

SCENT Amazingly, Mike's Natural Lime smells just like fresh cut limes. I did not detect any overly-sweet, chemical (read, fake) scents. The soap presented only pure lime. Very nice.

LATHER Mike's lathers very well. My water is on the hard side and I have no problems getting consistently great results. Through trial an error, I have been able to get produce perfect amounts of slick, thick lather with each shave.

Looking for Iron Gall ink.

That R&K is very good stuff, it flows better for me than Ecclesiastical Stationery Supplies ink. Diamine offers some, too, along with the Chesterfield Archival (same juice?). Most of mine are vintage and getting hard to find reliably these days -- Montblanc's offering in Midnight Blue was iron gall up until about a year or two ago, sadly.

Recently, I bought two bottles of Hero blue-black 232 which turned out to be a really impressive product! And inexpensive. I tested it in several vintage lever fillers before putting it into a couple of Pelikans ... no problems.

It's out there on eBay for under $10 with shipping, it was a lot cheaper when we first discovered it. Make sure it looks like that bottle.

I love IG inks! Well-behaved, somewhat dry, and especially permanent. As far as the worries go, I treat 'em as I would any normal ink.

MdC needed more water

I'm 2 years into the wet shaving caper, and like most on here there's no going back.
During weekdays I generally use Biotique shaving cream, rotated with a range of sticks (LaToja, Arko, Speick). And at weekends I reach for my jar of MdC. Almost 2 years into it and barely dented.
Anyway, I had been away for 6 weeks carrying just a stick of Arko, and when I came back I was looking forward to diving back into the MdC. But I found disappointment, loading up plenty of soap but the lather being just a tad disappointing. I was using more-or-less the same face-lathering approach that had yielded perfect results every day with my trusty ole stick of Arko.
This morning's shave started the same way until it struck me - try more water. So having face-lathered for a minute with the moderately wet brush I'd used to load up, I dipped it back into the water and continued lathering with a pretty wet brush. And bingo - loads of lather like it should be.
The moral of the tale?
Soaps often have their peculiarities. Even for the reasonably experienced, there is often attention required if you revisit a routine that you'd left behind.
And that's part of the attraction of this whole weird world.

Hi Guys,

It's been a while since I posted on this site, and wow, has it changed. The backgrounds look great. I've been catching up on the latest in brushes and razors and I see a lot of members talking about Bob Farvour custom brushes. I take it he is a vendor here somewhere on the site. Similar scent?

I was wondering if there were any soaps with a similar scent to the old Synergy "Lavender and Cedarwood" shaving soap. Love the scent but the performance is not there for me. For those of you who used it, would you say it is close to a cedar scented soap or is it a unique scent? I've used Lavender scented soaps but not just purely cedarwood scented soaps.

Did you ever get a tax bill for buying tobacco on line?

Yesterday I get this VERY OFFICIAL letter from the NJ Treasury Dept. Stating that I owe a 30% plus 7% tax on an online purchase I did back in 2014. It says that the seller reported that I bought the baccy and I now have to pay the tax. Anyone else ever get one of these notices? This will certainly change my buying habits. It also came from out of state. I also learned that they have a pending NJ bill that will triple the tax to 90%. WOW

I went to the outlet mall in my area with my family and noticed they have a Body Shop in there. I went in to see what they had to offer and I saw maca root cream for 16.00. I wanted to give it a go so I went to but it and girl mentioned a deal they had going on 20.00 for the cream, post shave, and a small synthetic brush. I don't know what to think about the brush, but I'm looking forward to trying the cream. Just wanted to let everyone about the deal.

So the wife says we need birth control.

So the wife looks at me yesterday and tells me we need birth control in our bathroom because every time she looks into the bathroom cabinet there are more razors in the cabinet since the last time she looked.

I told her that it isn't my place to tell my razors how to live their lives and they are just doing what razors do.

I hope they continue to keep it up and I'm hoping to see a nice bottom dial Fat Boy or a Toggle pop up in there one day!

Aloe Vera

I'm currently at my one month mark for my beard. Yay!
I have this Aloe Vera plant in my window and had a leaf break off the other day and was wondering if I could use it in my beard. The only product I currently use is jojoba oil after I shower and us J.R. Liggen shampoo each day. I only like to use natural products.
So if I was to use the Aloe Vera, what is the best way to apply it, how long should I let it set before washing it out, etc. Anyone have experience with this?

Tobacco jars question

Yup most of us do. I have 70-80 mason jars with tobaccos in it for both aging and daily consumption. Works wonderfully. Just keep out of direct light and your good to go. I keep mine on two shelves for decoration in my game room.

plus if you have a blend or two you can't live without as is your case, you need to stock up a few pounds at least because we all know, it's more probable that that it will be discontinued rather than be available in 10-15 years.

Hi and happy not to be a LURKER anymore. I just recently got back into SR's. I used one years ago and then air travel and TSA kind of put a stop to that as I travel light.

My first experience with SR's and strops was watching my Dad shave in the 50's. The strop was a duel purpose tool back in the old days as some of you ole timers might know; I know I was in fear of it.

I have a few old SR's and dealing for a custom at this time. I'll post a pic if I get it to see what your thought are if that is ok.

I'm in Taiwan now and will be for a few months and then it will be back to Texas which has been my normal routine for the past 15 years or so.

I was surprised to see so many interested in SR's and I hope to learn much from this forum and the knowledge you bring to it. I'm happy to be a member and hope I can contribute in some way in the future.

Newbie question

Hello everyone! First post. Looking for a suggestion. I would like to start investing in a really good set of tools for myself. I've purchased a new merkur slant razor that works wonderfully. I want to get a good brush. Currently I have a cheap wooden Handle brush I got for $15 that sheds constantly. I use MWF shave soap and don't intend on switching because I love it! I would like something as luxurious as possible and soft, but that does a good job with a bowl lather on a soap puck. I dont care much about aesthetics, but once again please consider that I will be mostly bowl lathering, so handles may be a bit of a hindrance. Budget is around $125-$150 tops. Looking for a quality brush for the cash and I know there's no better place to ask than here! If you need any more info please ask and I will hapilly provide it!

Welcome aboard DP! Glad to have you on B&B. You should head down the the Hall of Fame if you haven't and formally introduce yourself. As far as brushes go, while yes, usually more money means less problems with the brush. Less money doesn't always mean more. I'm sure there are members here that regal you of tales where expensive brushes have failed on them, and others who can talk about cheaper brushes that have been workhorses for years. I have a similar problem with my brush. It was only $7 on sale and not much more regularly priced. It's shedding quiet a lot for a brush that's been used for 2 months now IMHO. I might add some other brushes to the rotation to spare it a quick demise.

Also is there a particular type of brush you'd like? Such as hair composition. You can get excellent quality boar and synthetics for under $100. If you're looking for badger you can probably go over $100 easily if you get the better quality hairs. I'm sure others will have something to add to this as well.

Another Weird Razor To ID

Anybody recognise this?

It's small and very light - the baseplate is aluminium and the plastic stop on the end of the handle has got a diamond on it.

It looks like it's going to be pretty aggressive too...

So any ideas what this is guys?

Another Weird Razor To ID

Jackpot at the Antique stores yesterday.

My wife & I went out antiquing yesterday. I ran across a pristine pair of Arkansas stones in an awesome wood box. Hard and a Trans Black both are 8" X 2 " X 1".

Second stop I found another Transparent Arkansas soaked with oil, but otherwise perfect. This one is a 5" X 2" X 1" in a cool aluminum stand. Sorry about the blurry pic, I had it in the 'Simple Green' soak before I saw the bad picture. I will post another when it's all cleaned up.

Cold Steel 4" Ti-Lite Tactical Folding Knife - No Longer Available

What did I buy?

I went to the Orlando flea market today and bought this straight razor for $10. Good? Bad? Is it useable? Would anyone hone it? Could I use it for my first razor? I'm still so new to all this and I am trying to learn what's the correct things to buy and what not to buy. I'm asking this because I have never seen a straight razor this big/long and this shape before. I haven't been around long.

If someone could give me info on what this razor is all about, I would appreciate it.

Let's Hear It For Wedge Blade Safety Razors!

I have got my straight razor addiction going off onto a tangent lately. I meant to get rid of all my Rolls razors a while back, but I just ran across one that was hiding from me while I was purging. Recently I picked up a Wilkinson Empire 7 day set, then two Darwin sets, and just now I won a Kampfe Brothers set. I was sorely tempted by a Heljestrand 7 day set but decided it was too expensive for me. I am looking forward to getting my hands on the Kampfe Bros Star set, and it will be the first one I go all out to restore. Oh, that reminds me. I also have a very nice minty Everite set on its way that needs no restoring, just honing and shaving.

So who else here likes the hoe handle with non-disposable blade setup? Anybody have a comprehensive history of the various models that they would like to share? I know that the Kampfe Brothers razor design predates the Gillette DE and thats about it. And I know that the steel on these blades is really good stuff and takes a great edge if you hone it like a straight. And that the "wedge" blades are actually about 1/4 hollow, not wedges at all.

I will throw some pics up in a few days. I just lost my job and had to move all my razor stuff back onto my boat, and everything is jampacked right now.

Of the new arrivals, I have only honed and shaved with the Darwins, and I was pleased with them. I never did like the disposable SE blades. They just never worked well for me, though disposable DE blades I can get along with just fine in a Gillette adjustable razor.

Too bad nobody makes a non-disposable SE razor now. I think it could be a commercial success, in light of the resurgence of straight shaving and wet shaving in general.

I assumed that this was the proper forum to post about these razors, since they ARE SE and they ARE safety razors, even though they are honed and stropped in the manner of straights. ???

New toolbox?

I'm wanting a new tool box to keep in the back of my truck (not a full bed box) just an handheld one to keep ratchet straps etc. in, I'd like for it to be waterproof at least a little, but want it to be inexpensive in case some "unsavories" decide to grab it out of my bed

Mech Mod Just Arrived

First mech mod just arrived, only 24hrs in but really enjoying it.
I've been loving my little $6 dripper for six months or so and was wanting a tube mech to stick it on. Splashed out $7 on the mech mod with three different sized battery tubes and am a happy camper. Thinking I might pick up another of the same so I can have two different sizes on the go at once and some spare parts.
Next on the menu is an 18350 battery for it, would be nice to have a tiny set up for some short ventures out and mainly as I think it will look cool with the tiny dripper.

After using regulated variable devices for 9 months I was expecting to be left lacking running my usual 0.5-1.5 builds on it but it's vaping away just fine on 0.5&1.2 so far. Once I've gotten used to it I will probably chuck some lower builds on just to see what it can do.

The shiny brass finish, seen on the smaller tubes, is not really to my tastes but after a day of vaping on the big one the finish has settled down comfortably. I still need to adjust the pins a little to get everything sitting flush but it has new toy status at the moment and I'm constantly messing around with it.

Glad I tried a mech mod, I appreciate the simplicity. If they can be likened to the straight razor of the shaving world then I'm rocking a Gold Dollar.

I know this has come up a bunch in the past, but I want to know current laws. I have a package weighing 11 pounds. I hear USPS is out of the question. Is UPS ground okay for shipping a package with aftershaves, or do I need to go Fedex ground? I feel like people always recommended Fedex and not UPS, is there any reason for that?

Question about black spot on bottom of VDH puck.

Today I decided to pop the puck of VDH deluxe soap out of the mug. I did this because I was wondering about the little bit of water that may run down the side of the puck. Upon flipping the puck over there was a black spot on the soap. I assumed it was mold growing and would hate to throw the puck so I washed it off. Sorry I should have taken a photo. So my question is how does a person stop this in the future? It is a VDH apothecary mug, the soap ismeant for the mugbut there is a slight gap around the puck. I followed the instructions by wetting the puck and pressing it down in the cup. I have been using it for 3 weeks. I have hard water and I don't use any inline filters or a water softener. I don't lather in the cup but of course a little water and some lather does get down the side of the puck while loading it. I load for about 20 seconds give or take and face lather.

I have tried doing several different searches but could not find any answers. Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

Canadian Old Type with a NEW regent handle

When I first started with a pipe a couple decades ago I really enjoyed Bengal Slices, now getting back into it I've tried Fusilier's Ration and the SToP Bengal Slices but not Lancer's Slices (yet). Curious to hear comparisons. I've only started on the Bengal tin and haven't finished my first Fusilier's tin yet but prefer the new Bengal over Fusilier's so far. I do miss the coins/rounds but am getting better at rubbing out the 'baccy. How do they stack up for you?

So I recently splurged and bought a Gillette Tech Fat Handle almsot immediately after I said I wouldn't buy more stuff, since I had already ordered a Whipped Dog High Mountain badger brush and a Gillette Tech Ball End razor as well. I've been loving both, but I like the weight in the Ball End more than the Fat Handle. I read some where that people put stuff into the handle since it's hollow. What can I put in it that will add weight and not damage the handle?

Finally found my BBS setup.

R89, Astra SP blades, VDH deluxe (as preshave), Proraso for shave. VDH boar and badger brush. Bowl for distilled water. Clubman aftershave. Nothing fancy. Before I shower. I microwave distilled water and wet towel. Apply hot towel till it cools down.Then I load VDH soap with boar brush. Reheat towel, face lather and towel over lather. Till towel cools down. While using hot towel VDH formula I load badger with proraso. Remove towel and rinse the VDH with distilled water. To me this is the most important part. This makes the distilled water slick before I put on my face then face lather the proraso. Then the 3 pass WTH,XTG,ATG shave with very little cleanup. Takes like 25 minutes. If you cant spend 30 minutes a day on yourself im sorry. The preshave routine makes the Astra SP slide across like nothing is there. Then I shower wash face with Nivea face scrub. Then after shower Clubman AS with no burn just the awesome aroma. I wish I could describe how good this feels compared to cartridge razors. I learned how to shave with a Gillette red tip with some brand of shave soap that my dad used. My dad learned to shave when he joined the Army at 17 for WWII till then he had a beard. No preshave routine just lather shave and go. Well I don't consider my skin sensitive but it's not leather. My dad's routine was killing me with the acne and all at 14. So I forget what razor it was but it was a cartridge and shave soap. This was a little improvement. So used carts for years. Then I stopped a few months ago and looked at what I was paying for a shave. So started doing research and found this site...... What?😮 a preshave routine. Never heard of it. I cannot stress enough how important the preshave is. It's so important that I say load everything you can on your face before and take away 1 by 1 till it works for you. You can't soften the hair to much. So if you are going to spend money do it on the preshave. Whew that got a little off subject. Sorry for the book. I don't post often.......but when I do I get a little of subject. Thanks for all the help. My son is going to start shaving soon I'm just going to send him here to learn to shave. LOL. Is 124° F (51° C) water too hot for knot glue?

Yes, it is. I wouldn't go higher than 100F tops.

Have you measured it with a thermometer at the sink? Or are you going with what your HWH is set for?
If the latter, you're wasting a lot of energy, roll that puppy back to 115F, and watch your power bill drop.

Even after you cool the water, your brushes may continue to shed for a few days.
But reducing the water temp ASAP may help to prevent future damage.

I've specifically set out before to get one of these great finds in the wild, striking out every time and returning to the inter-web to purchase whatever tickles my fancy. Today I took my son to his guitar lesson, and decided to walk around the shops and try and get a spare key made. Decided to walk into an old antique shop and asked the older gentleman behind the counter if he had any DE razors. I immediately thought I was wasting his time because I had to explain what that was and what it might look like. He continued staring at me smoking his fat cigar and reached somewhere in the stacks of what looked like a disorganized mess and pulled out an a Gillette H2 TTO. Mine for a whopping $15 plus tax. Now I get to spend some time cleaning it up, but here are some pictures. Hope they come through, never uploaded to this site from my phone using the tapatalk app.

Maggard V2 Open Comb-Big Improvement

I broke down and ordered one of the new Maggard V2 Open Comb razors to compare with the two V1’s I PIF’d. I just had my first shave with it. It is hefty, much heavier than my Gillette NEW SC. The MR1 handle is brushed stainless and the head is polished zinc alloy. I loaded a new Gillette Platinum in it. The blade alignment is immediate and perfect. I got a very good, close, smooth shave. It shaves much closer than the V1 which was, by most standards, too mild. This will be my new travel razor.

WHAT is your current pre-work out drink?

Lather, what is really its purpose?

Ok so this is a wierd title. Let me first ensure you that I recognize the vital need for lather, it is a must, on that we all b&bers will agree I am sure. But why, or rather how, is it vital?

The reason I'm asking this rather silly question is that I've encountered two conflicting theories as to why and how shaving lather works for the benefit of the shaving process. When I first started to learn wet-shaving I read that the lather was basically there in order to keep your face wet. Water, I learned, softened the hairs and made them easier to cut. This means that the lather was really just a way to suspend the water, making it stick to your face and stop it from evaporating too fast.

However, I got a small book/pamphlet called "The art of shaving or shaving made easy - what the man who shaves ought to know" from a good friend, and read it. Those unfamiliar with this wonderful little piece of literature I'll tell you that it is an old instruction book from 1905 that goes through the process of wet-shaving with a straight razor (though it mentions the precursors to modern safety razors). Anyhow, this book, rather than reinforcing my belief that lather was a way of applying water to the face to soften hairs, it was in fact almost opposite, or rather made to counter this. It explains how water makes it harder to cut ones hairs. Since the hair is already oily making it softer just makes it harder to cut it, it slips away from the blade easier the author argues. So, the shaving lather is there to remove the oil from the hairs, not wetting them.

Maybe this is obvious, maybe this is a ridiculous thread I've started. However, thing is that this is the first source I've read where water hasn't been named as the primary component to good wet-shaving. In all other research, from this forum to shaving vendors online, everywhere, lather has been explained as a way to suspend water. This seems a bit odd, especially when the author of The Art of Shaving states that it is a common misconception that softening hairs with water is a good thing.

My small wondering is if anyone knows which of these "theories" are correct. Is it so that the 1905 author just didn't get his facts right, or is it that we modern wet-shavers have lost some knowledge and are having misconceptions about lather and its' purpose?

Hello from a re-newbie

Hi All

I first discovered wet shaving and the badger and blade 5 or so years ago and got very into it with a decent collection of razors and soaps and brushes etc.

Then things like having children, and going back to university to retrain happened and I let things go a bit. My new career as a software developer pretty much meant I had to grow a beard to fit in as well!

I had got rid of most of my collection, but kept hold of my Merkur HD, Feathers, and some Proraso bits (cream, pre/post shave and balm) and a Vulfix brush which was the first one I bought. Those being the things I liked the most.

I recently got the desire to shave my beard off and have found myself bitten by the wet shaving bug again. It's been about a month now and I've picked up some new soaps and creams, various blades, a Fatip Grande (which looks pretty ferocious) and an amazing Semogue 620. The acquisition disorders have well and truly kicked back in.

I have lost the details for my old B&B account so created a new one and thought I'd say hello.

I love this place but it is absolutely terrible for encouraging me to spend money

My ATT Atlas with R1 & M1 plates arrived today and it is everything I hoped it would be.
It's my first non-adjustable and it's already making friends and playing nicely with the others

I have a conundrum, and since B&B is the most helpful spot I know (and I won't get the troll responses) I thought I would bring it up here. I totaled my car the other week. Obviously I'm all right, or at least able to keyboard still. My issue is the there's a $7K gap between the insurance and the loan. This is my first experience doing this. Any wheeler-dealer types out there know the best way to minimize the loss?

You know, we all were dubious of ZY's "no stain" logo when they first shipped, and someone took it to the lab and verified it was not a stainless steel alloy, but today I realized something interesting.

In the two months I have had my ZY430+ and GD300, neither have shown so much as a water spot. Both are polished looking and shiny like new. And it's not due to the exquisite care I take of them either - I beat the poop out of both of them practicing honing techniques and learned straight shaving on them.

So not stainless steel per se, but clearly not such bad alloys, at least from the looks perspective.

New Product - Wood Single Edge Shavette Straight Razor

My First DIY Pine Brush Handle

I had some scrap wood from some laminated pine board that I used to make a desk top on the cheap (steel angle, flat, and square tube, bolts, and pine board, with twine for support), thought I'd like to make a brush handle and it looked like a good candidate (turned out pretty well for the desk, anyway ;).

It's not done yet, but here's what I have so far:

Took some strips and cut them into about 1.25" square by 0.5" tall blocks, cleaned 'em with a damp cloth, put a thin layer of epoxy on the top of two of 'em, and clamped 'em all together (with some cheap 99 cent clamps). After it dried over night, sanded the edges so they were about flush, drew a circle on the top and bottom, then went at it with an old dull xacto knife knocking down the corners.

Not easy, but it's coming along. The worst part is trying to remove material from the end-grain sides, but I think I've more or less figured that out (hold block with side grain horizontal, end grain on left and right of block. Cut away from myself and toward the end grain using slicing motion, with blade at a ~45 degree angle respect to the grain) I'll have a Morakniv Classic 2/0 some time next week--should make things go a lot quicker--or smoother, at least. Might get a new blade for my xacto, too, for any detail work I need to do. Still not sure what the final shape will be...will probably evolve as I uncover the grain. I have a drill press to make the hole for the knot, but don't have a bit for that yet.

As far as color, not sure if I want to use the same stain I used for my desk top or go with a natural oil finish (flax is what I have on hand, but I may do another). I'll try a couple on some of the other scrap pieces and see what I like. Here's a couple pictures of the desk (before it got all cluttered up):

Hi everyone, glad to be here. This place is a treasure trove of knowledge. It's been 5 months now more or less since I started DE shaving, and I don't think I am ever going back to cartridges.

I love the ritual, the preparation, the collection and most of all the development of techniques. It really is an awesome hobby. The only cons I could think of is the RAD, and SAD? (Soap). This affliction is very real.

In those months I have acquired 6 razors now. A Parker 24c and 92r butterfly, Merkur's 34 and 37 slant, ATT S1 and the soon to arrive shavecraft 102. Too bad the stealth is no longer available, that one would have been here as well.

Smoking in casinos

Tomorrow I'll be joining my family at the somewhat local casino and I was wondering if any brown leafers smoke their pipe or cigar at the casino. I'm not much of a gambler, so at a certain point I like to get a craft beer and one of my cigars and find a lounge or outside bench to sit down and relax for a while. I've also smoked while gambling at the slots, not all the gamblers in the smoking section seem to appreciate cigars, it makes me wonder how they'd react if I brought my pipe.

Active Duty Field Shaving

Hey guys,
So I don't post very often in here, but I should I am always bragging to all my friends about how amazing my shaves are as a wet shaver. Well my journey for the best field shaving kit has begun! Now I'm deploying in the summer so I'm trying to get it all squared away before then.

My idea for a quick grab and go shave kit is such.
- Pelican case to hold it all
- Parker A1R (4 piece travel Razer)
- Synthetic Brush (either travel or small)
- Tabac Shaving Soap stick (suggestions or other recommendations on shave sticks?) Or small travel tin and try to learn how to transfer Soap into the tin
- 3 plastic Razer travel cases
- small mirror
- small microfiber towel
- 3.0 oz bottle of Nivea After shave Balm

Now that should definitely due the trick and I think depending on if I go with the travel brush that collapses I could easily fit it all inside a pretty small pelican case.

On a side note I want to give Mitchell's wool fat Shaving Soap a shot? What do you guys think? Also could I possible just get a small tin and melt down my favorite soaps and put them in the small tin and have it last at least a months period? That way I could ditch the stick and just have small travel tins for the field.

Shave Clinic Beard Prep Question

I know that there are a number of effective ways to prep the beard before a shave. Here is what I do, but find it only moderately effective in prepping for a shave:

While soaking my brush in warm water, I wash my face, apply some Proraso pre-shave, rubbing it into my beard. I then sit in a chair with a warm wash cloth covering the beard for 3 to 5 minutes. I mix shaving lather in the bowl and paint on my face, then use an EJ89 with a fresh Astra blade, doing 2 to 3 passes.

Are there suggestions that any of you have to improve the beard preparation, something that would further soften the hairs to render them more easily cut? Or maybe you can point me to a thread that discusses this.

That's better prepared then I am, so I'm sure your's will be more than fine. I've bought vintage blades that who know's how or for how long they were properly or improperly stored over time and they were fine. By the way, mine just remain in their packs in my medicine cabinet.

I have an interesting thread idea. We all know that wet shaving is a collectors endeavor, and that some of us on the forum have spent an ungodly amount of money towards shaving supplies. However, if you were to give EVERYTHING up and pick ONLY your favorites what would they be? Here is the catch: You have a imaginary $1000 budget to spend on the following:

Imaginary $1,000 spree

Greetings. I brought the Gold Tech out of retirement

I received my grandfather's Gillette Gold Tech in the 80's and used it until about 95 when DE blades became hard to find. During a recent trip to Idaho, I came across TAOS, picked up some Gillette platinum blades and brought the old razor out of retirement. The shave I was able to achieve was halfway decent, BBS on the face, neck not so much. I kept getting nicks, bumps and razor burn on the neck. I found a pack of Van Der Hagen ice tempered blades and got better results on my neck, but still getting a few bumps on my neck and still not BBS.

Any suggestions on blades and a slightly more aggressive razor? I intend to hand done the gold tech to my son when he is ready.

So today I bought a new pair of Rockport cap toe dress shoes. I've never bought a pair of shoe trees but I realize that it's important for the longevity of my shoes.

What should I look for when shopping for shoe trees? I think I want cedar but not sure what else to look for? How long will they last?

Took Some Suggestions

In a recent thread I posted I discussed my favorite soaps and asked what some favorites of other people were. Some of the most commonly referred soaps that didn't make my list were:

1) Mystic Waters: I have tried this soap, and though I like the two fragrances I've tried they both seemed a little finicky and gave me a headache. Too bad, because I really wanted to like them.

2) Tabac: I have also tried this in stick form, which put it in another category for me. I do love the scent and performance, but the price was a sticking point for me. More about that further down.

3) Martin De Candre and Aqua Di Parma: I haven't tried these, and I haven't been able to find them at a price I felt willing to pay. They are on the 'to try' list though.

4) Haslinger: Hadn't really heard that much about it before.

Wade & Butcher info help. Ivory?

I can't seem to find any info on this razor and was wondering if I could get some help.
It has the following markings on the tang: circle B, "special" with an arrow through it, a cross, and "improved tang" on one side. "Wade & Butcher", "Sheffield, England", and a circle B with arrow and cross on the other side. It also says "Thursday" on the top of the spine.

Does anyone have a guess about what year it was made?

Also, can you tell if it's ivory? I tried the hot needle test and it didn't seem to do a thing to the scales. I can't find any dark spots or pits that you find with bone. Here are the pictures. Thanks for the help!
