blade stops in se razors, GEM and injector

These razors typically have a blade stop to help hold the blade in place. A lot of the time its touted as a safety feature, not just to prevent blade movement during a shave, but as protection from the corners of the blade nicking you.

My question is that, when using a "twin jector" blade with two blades in it, the top blade lacks the edge stops function of protecting the user from the corners of that blade. But I never see mention of the twin jector blades being dangerous due to that "flaw"

So IS the blade stop truly necessary for a single edge, or injector razor?

Definately Need A Restraint

It has been merely a month since I returned to wet shaving; I started with a Merkur 34C HD. I just wanted to simplify my life. This is what has transpired since July 1st. I even got rid of one to help a young man get started ('51 SS Flare Tip).

But, there is comfort in knowing I can trade out some of the duplicates for others I would like to have.
Fatboy, 1966 L4 Slim, Red Tip, Blue Tip, Black Tip, President, Sheraton, Diplomat...AAAAHHH!

The more terrifying part...I have yet to try any other soaps, creams or croaps!!

Straights Further deranged about shaving, is Desertlifter

Latest shave today after spending a week hiking in the Redwoods National Forest. Lathered up with Summer Storm and my synthetic brush, then had at it

I've only cut myself once with my straight, that a vertical cut on my chin when I was shaving across the grain. That cut was shallow and about 1cm in length.

Today was was apparently time for another ding. The corner of my square point razor cut a fine line in front of my ear. No pain, barely bled.

So so I slowed down, relathered, and finished two passes (WTG and XTG) with no further drama.

My result - other than the small souvenir - was a DFS on most of my face and neck. I touched things up a bit with my S&S, applied and rinsed alum, and called it a night.

I consistently get a more even shave with my straight. I'm not getting BBS yet, but the trouble spots on my neck that annoy me like crazy are nice and clean with the SR.

BBS will come. Thanks for checking in.

Quantitative shimming information

I recently acquired a Merkur travel razor that produced a very mild shaving profile, even with a Feather blade. Investigating online groups, shimming seemed a very easy way to increase the aggressiveness. Being an engineer, I wanted to measure stuff, so here is some of what I think I have discovered:

- Measured with a caliper (not a micrometer), most blades I use are .005" thick, plus or minus .001".
- For making shims, normal scissors are usable for trimming off the sharp bits.
- For the Merkur travel razor (love the compact size), cutting at the big notch between the sharp bit and the body of a blade still covers the contact points. Make sure you note this if you are using other razors. The shim goes _below_ the blade, so the top plate still determines the blade angle.
- For reference, a Merkur Progress has a 1mm per inch thread and goes from 1 to 5 on the dial in 270 degrees, so a one step is about .006".

That's the quantitative stuff. Now my opinion:

This razor is so mild that the 5 o'clock shadow comes around noon. On the positive side, you will never be spending 10 minutes tending to a weeper/cut while you're prepping for the business meeting.

Two shims and the razor is still really mild, but getting close to a Progress at 2. A shim is almost a click and a Progress setting of three seems to be generally thought of as medium aggressive. YMMV

Hope this helps!

Simulated shutter sound - Turn it On or Off?

At a Presidential press event, those cameras would have been digital SLR cameras. SLR means Single Lens Reflex. They have a mirror that directs the lens view up to the optical viewfinder. Upon releasing the shutter, the lens pops up with a notable click allowing the view to go straight back to the shutter which opens allowing the view to reach the sensor.

Since every Tom, Dick, and Harry has a dSLR these days snapshooting, probably the same at the golf event. It was someone shooting with a dSLR and you can't turn the noise off.

On point and shoots and cell phones, it is a simulated shutter noise from the speaker. It's cheesy in my opinion. I don't use a dSLR and I always turn the shutter sound off first thing.

New guy checking in

Howdy fellas, I'm checking in from San Diego CA. It's not home, but it's not the worst duty station on earth.

I figured I could get into some restorations while I've got some down time so I've placed some bids on fleabay, we'll see what I wind up with. Considering I know jack-all about straight razors this could get interesting. Looks like I've got lots of reading to catch up on.

Med Prep?

I bought some samples of various blades; Voskhod, Israeli Reds, 7 O'clock Black (awesome by the way) and Personna Med Prep. The Med Prep shaved outstanding in my Slim but it seemed extremely sharp.

While I had the best shave I ever had, they seemed sharper than Feathers, which I do not get along with. Can anyone compare the sharpness of the Med Prep with other blades out there for comparison.

Satin Tip - The Purest - Luxury Synthetic Shaving Brush Black

I bought this brush a while ago and I kinda forgot about it as I have been using my other newer synthetics, my razorock and maggards synthetics, but I decided to use this little brush today and man, it is a very good synthetic brush. Does anyone know the size of the loft on this little amazing brush? it holds a ton of lather despise being known as a smaller synthetic.

Some Blade Help

Ok guys,
I need a little help. I've been using Personna Red's load s in my ATT R1 and been getting great shaves. I want to try Gillette's lineup. All these are made in Russia. Can anyone give me some input on which to try first with tomorrow mornings shave? Thanks.

Moving on up

After months of having my gear stashed away in the dark recesses of my closet and bathroom cabinet.......

And all I had to ask the wife was, do we really need that basket in the corner? She took the bait, and I proudly took out the CRSW Le Chypre Sombre and her reaction was not, when did you get that and how much was it, rather, I really like it there, leave it.

Would like to hear how everyone else broached the topic of getting more real estate for their gear...

It has been a while since I've been hunting in the wild. I picked up two cotis(the one somebody mutilated is probably only good for slurry stones), a Franz swaty, and a Larkin straight. I have never used a swaty or had a Larkin razor, but for the prices I couldn't pass them up. Straights must be catching on. I have noticed prices going way up and selection going down over the last couple years.

New Razor recommendations

I started 3 yrs ago with an 89dl, found it a little to gentle and didn't quite shave close enough, moved to a Merkur barber pole slant for like a year, liked it but found lots of irritation around my neck and just a little ruff in general. Tried a DLC Ikon and hated it, angle was just all wrong for me.

I then moved on to a Futur which I really liked at first but am finding just not so much anymore similar to the Merkur slant, lots of neck irritation. I randomly went back to the 89dl after having not used it for 3 yrs and really like how smooth it is but finding again it is just not aggressive enough even with a 3 pass.

I was thinking of trying the Rockwell 6s but don't want to just keep throwing money at my shaving hobby. Any recommendations for something a little more aggressive than the 89dl. But gentler than the other 2.

One result from honing at 2:00 AM

My inner circle knows that I'm a bit of a nightbird. I'll stay up way too late just so I can get quality time on the stones. On top of that, over the last 4-5 months I quit smoking; this added fuel to the fire; as the detox progressed, there was a fair bit of excess energy to burn off. Staying up way late every single night has been the rule for a while now.

Anyway - I guess what I'm trying to say is that I usually hone a lot, but recently I've been really hitting the stones. Most recently though, over the last few weeks - I've really been in 'the zone'.

Last night in particular, I was up way way way too late with a Kamisori and a new mystery Asagi. I had an old Kung Fu movie playing on my Macbook througout this honing event. Can't tell you what the title was but I will say it was funny as hell. Anyway, I'm just drawing a picture here - make of it what you will..

When I was done, I knew that edge was going to be superlative.
The edge felt dead-on-the-money-correct on the stone during that fnal pass. Same when stropping it too.
I shaved with it today, and it was in fact a glorious shave indeed. I was actually a little giddy during the ATG pass. I've been smiling all day about this shave actually. And that happiness has me thinking...

I guess the point of this post is one of gratitude, I'm just really jazzed about being able to hone my own, hone them well, and being graced with the ability to shave really freakin' well.

The point...yes, there's a point to the post. I knew I'd find it if I kept writing...

Last night I realized how much I'm really loving the hones I've been working with; the results have been spectacular and the process has been engaging in ways that are beyond my ability to describe.
In the beginning, when I first started honing, I used to read the threads about which hone is best. I always did my own testing and chased what I thought I needed to find, but I was often distracted by what others thought were the best options to roll with.

Since then, I've come to realize that I don't neccessarily need whatever the 'best' is. What I need is what I want - and I don't need to want the 'best'. What I want, is to be happy with what I like because I need to like what I have or I'm wasting my time.

I realize that all of the above is painfully obvious, but it was on my mind and I felt like typing it out.

Fine Lavender C&S O&C

Wondering if anyone has tried Fines newest offering, Lavender Pour Homme? How does it compare to C&S Oxford & Cambridge?

I would imagine the soap characteristics will be different as Fine is somewhat copying Tabac's formula, whereas C&S is made by Valobra. Both excellent products.

If anyone has used both products I'd love to hear your thoughts.

vintage bakelite de's

Not sure about the thread. Do you have any pictures of the underside of the base-plate or are there any markings on it at all, e.g. "Germany," "Solingen?" My guess is that it is European, probably German made, Apollo or perhaps very early Merkur.

In any event, you don't see that many that had the adjustable knuckle in bakelite in that good of a condition. Really nice find. I was surprised to see that Feather made a metal one.

I finally got a Schick Repeating Razor Type C2

i have not gotten all of the spots off, but whatever it is comes of a bit, and leaves a reddish stain on the cloth i was using.

here is the worst spot after some work. i am afraid i may be taking of the gold wash as well, but over all it is looking a bit better.

once getting to this point i just had to try it, and i have to say it is very comfortable, and easy to use. i was really surprised how heavy it is. it really is a solid chunk of metal. mine may not win any beauty contests, but for an ~80 year old razor it is really doing fine, and i am really happy that i now have it.

Goodwill

I found a Goodwill this weekend with the brass handle split the entire length. Thus, the ball end and top that screws into the head are separate. (five individual pieces)

Does the printing on the END barrel of the the handle:

PAT. JAN. 13, 1920 U.S.A.
OTHER PATENTS PENDING

Go at the ball end of the completed handle or at the head? I'm finding photos online where it's each way, which is correct?

60 yrs. old and finally starting the full "wet shave " routine

Hello everyone ! My first post here on B&B.

After about 42 years of canned shave creams & gels, and many different Gillette razors ( most recently Edge gel and Fusion ProGlide razor ) I am finally going all in with wet shaving. Two weeks ago, I started with the Art of Shaving introductory kit, just to see if I'd like using a brush and cream. Yes indeed ! So I then jumped further in, and for the past week, I've been using both Proraso green tub soap and Proraso green tube cream (alternating each day .... really like them both) with a Simpson's Colonel X2L best badger brush. First few days with my Gillette Fusion ProGlide and last two days with a new "Harry's" razor. I've tried both " bowl lathering" and " face lathering" and, so far, seem to be enjoying the face lathering technique. Quality of shave with the Fusion ProGlide and Harry's razors seem quite similar, both far superior to Edge gel with each razor. After shave has been Kiehl's Facial Fuel, which I've been using for years now. Expensive, but for me, worth every penny.

So, to continue my voyage, I just ordered a Merkur 34C with a sampler pack of blades (Derby, Astra SP, Personna Red, Crystal, and Feather) and a Clubman styptic pencil (just in case ...).
I've watched a bunch of videos on DE shaving technique and read many internet articles on the subject, and am raring to get started. Her's my first question ..... In what order should I try the blades ? I'm assuming Derby first and Feather last, but what blades in the middle ? Where should the "comes with the razor" Merkur blade fit in ? Secondly, ... how many shaves with each blade as I try them out ? Thirdly .... Pre shave oil .. yes or no ?

I'd appreciate any advice and comments. Thanks a lot. I'm looking forward to turning the "chore" of shaving into the "enjoyment" of shaving. With your thoughtful guidance and advice, I am sure that this will happen.

Not a good maiden voyage

Well...reality doesn't match expectation with my first SE attempt. Tons of painful tug. Stopped pretty quickly and switched to my DE (Merkur sledghammer) and was able to achieve BBS this morning.

I procured a vintage razor from a fellow B&B member. It was stated to have been shave ready - I have no real way of confirming that. I also purchased a $50 strop from Shavesmith on ETSY - I really don't know if my stropping was good/bad/indifferent.

Man. Tempted to divest of both of those items at fire sale prices and live the rest of my life in peaceful bliss.

Looking for some empathy and recommendations from my comrades here...

Aftershave WTT: 2 100ml bottles of Proraso aftershave lotion (classic green)

My Proraso ASB has run out and in a rush I picked up two replacement bottles, only to find that the bottles I got were the aftershave lotion and not the aftershave balm. DOH!
Anyone got some of the balm that they'd care to trade? I'd prefer the green but would also take the blue.

I can be flexible in the trade since ASB is $16 Vs $14 for ASL. Also, I dipped into one bottle (and used it exactly once) to see how the fragrance was when splashed on. Not for me. The other bottle one is unopened/unused.
Please just PM me if interested.

My 4,000th Post PIF!

As I type this out, this will be my 4000th post to Badger & Blade. Although I probably only have something like 39 meaningful posts. But in honor of the milestone...I thought I would give something away!

Click image for larger version.  Name: St. James.jpg  Views: 13  Size: 60.8 KB  ID: 677649

I am giving away a tub of St. James Sandalwood & Bergamot Shaving Cream and the corresponding After Shave Gel. These are not the small sizes but the full five ounce cream and the 3.4 ounce aftershave gel. I have used these two products exactly twice and I have decided that while they are an exceptional cream and a good after shave...I am more of a soap and splash kind of dude. So my loss is your gain. So who can enter. I am limiting this to those who have at least 50 posts. That's it just 50 posts. If you don't have 50 posts yet, post away. I will leave this up long enough for those who don't have enough posts to make them. There are enough "What is your..." soap, cream, aftershave, brush, razor, or blade threads around here that 50 posts can really be obtained in a few days if so inclined. Unfortunately, I can not ship out of the country unless it is APO/FPO, so my Brethren across the pond or to the north or south of me, or those in exotic places and those who like Vegemite, Marmite, or whatever that yeasty tasting stuff is...I apologize for not being able to send this off to you. One of these days I will do an international PIF.

I do ask...and I really cannot stress this enough. After the winner has used it a time or two...PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, start a new thread and review the products so that others can learn. When reviewing the product, please mention me so I can come back and read it also. If you are not good at reviews, no biggie. Just tell us if you like it or not. Maybe compare it to another product you have. Tell us if there are qualities you like or dislike about it. I have seen some reviews that are about two sentences long and provide more information than some reviews that are pages.

So let's review:
"I'm In"
USA or FPO/APO
50 Posts or more
Review the product

I will pick a winner on August 7th, 2016 at a time of my choosing. At that time I will send a PM to the winner and that person will have exactly 24 hours to respond. If said person does not respond in the appropriate time frame, then another member will be selected and PM'd. So forth and so on!

I will not delay any longer, I hope this goes to a good home and good luck!

Passaround Box #4 Review!

Got home on Friday to a small flat rate box sitting on my desk. I didn't expect to be up on the list for a couple weeks, so it was a really nice surprise to see it there!

6 Razors arrived, all labels and tucked into the toothbrush holders. Man that is a great idea, once I start my collection, I am going to for sure have to use this storage method.

Click image for larger version.  Name: IMG_20160730_224033710.jpg  Views: 1  Size: 18.5 KB  ID: 677643

I decided to pick one at random and decided on the Quaker to use as my first razor from the lot.

Click image for larger version.  Name: Quaker.jpg  Views: 1  Size: 34.3 KB  ID: 677644

I also decided to keep the soap the same throughout using the razors to remove variable that may have an effect on the shave as I'm mainly interested in the 'feel' of the different blades and the quality of the shave the blade provides. The soap will be Arko as I know that I can get a great lather from it every single time I use it and the lather I get from it is very slick and does not vary from use to use. The brushes I will be using will all be restored vintage brushes using well broken in boar knots.

Shave #1

The feel of this razor is actually fairly stout. The weight is about the heaviest out of the razors provided in the box. I start with a WTG pass and noticed right off that the razor does not have much audible feedback at all, it just slid right through the first pass pretty easily. The under the nose area went pretty easily as well, even with the wide blade as the balance of the razor really helped to get it in there and get up close under my nose. The weight of the razor seems to help with the WTG pass a bit and the razor feels well balanced in-hand. Relathered and moved to the XTG pass and that pass went very smoothly as well.

At this point I give my face a rinse and relather for the ATG pass. The razor performed really well with the ATG pass as well. The balance of the razor was a little different at this point as my grip on the razor is different for the ATG pass vs. the WTG and XTG passes. One thing that did stand out is that the ATG pass went really well, without any pulling or tugging at all.

Finished up with some touch-up under the chin and applied some OS. Very little sting or burn at all with a shave that I would rate a very good BBS.

Dorko 43 Premier 6/8

Here's a quick tip for anyone searching ebay for a 'nice' straight razor: IF you come across one that looks like this Dorko, move on—unless, of course, its part of a ridiculously-cheap package deal and you've time to burn restoring it.
Click image for larger version.  Name: dorko_quad_b4.jpg  Views: 2  Size: 80.8 KB  ID: 677642

After some extensive time on the buffers removing surface rust, residual pitting and blade wear, the blade began to look as though one could shave with it! The 3-pin scales were in decent shape and so only required a good, thorough cleaning and polishing. After re-pinning the pivot point, I realized I made a gaffe and had grabbed a brass rod vs the intended NI-SIL rod…oh well.

I honed the razor using a standard progress of Chosera 1k bevel-set; followed by a series of Naniwa SS 3k > 12k. Finished with some strokes on a vintage blue Escher water hone. Keenly-sharp edge (HHT4). The test shave was extremely smooth and comfortable.

Here are some glamour shots of my resurrected Dorko, brought back to a functional life….

Hardly Economical but it Certainly Can Be

Often I will hear about how thrifty wetshaving can be...then I spend a bit of time on this forum. Uh huh....

For sure the process can be economical however I don't see it as being the primary reason anyone gets involved with all of this. One glance at my straight razor inventory...shoots that whole theory cleanly in the butt. Names like Brown, Zowada, and Stark are not affiliated with bargain basement shaving.

Nonetheless.....

Wet shaving can in fact be a dirt cheap proposition. Just how inexpensive got me to thinking.

For about $50.00 +/- a few dollars, someone could put together a kit that would last for decades (aside from consumable items of course).

Example-

1. Decent DE razor..like the EJ DE 89 or similar-$35.00
2. Brush..Omega Pro 49-$10.00
3. Couple packs of blades-$3.00
4. Arko stick-$2.00

If one would care to upgrade a tad, add another few dollars for a second brush (always a good idea to have two), a bulk supply of blades (100 for an additional $6.00-$7.00) and maybe another soap or tube of cream which can vary quite a bit in price (but I have to say, Derby cream at $3.00 a tube is a rockin' deal).

Seems the majority of the crowd here does not subscribe to the bare-bones concept of thw wetshaving school; I certainly do not. Got me to wondering just what the ratio of minimalists vs. extremists might be. Where do you fit in???

Review - Stirling Lemon Chill

Let me preface this by saying that I have absolutely no previous experience with mentholated soaps.

I live in Georgia, in the South, and we have recently hit 90+ degrees which means it will probably stay that way until October. (If we're lucky, otherwise it will be December before things cool down. Heck, it was 75 degrees on Christmas last year so who know?). Anyway, after looking through some recommendations, and having previously used and enjoyed Stirling soaps I settled on Lemon Chill as a first go for a cooling menthol shave.

Initial impression:
I got the refill puck and after unwrapping smashed it into an empty TOBS container I had. Soap is pliant to the touch, fairy squishy. The smell is lemony but not sharp acidic citrus or lemon pinesoly. It makes me think of lemongrass or sherbert which is somewhat appropriate.

The shave:
Brush is soaked and ready, feather blade in my fatip picollo, I'm loading up. I don't notice as much sudsyness with this soap during the load as compared to some other Stirling, maybe the menthol or lemon oil? Doesn't affect the load though and soon I'm ready for face lather. Lathering up I notice the menthol, it's there, it's cool. Based on my expectation from reading about it I'm thinking it's fairy mild. By no means eye watering. Soap performance is what I expect from Stiring at this point, nice and slick. First pass goes well and I relather for the second.
On the second lather I notice the difference. Possibly now that my face has lost it's top layer of world weary skin cells and I'm loading onto just graduated newbie skin, this soap is cold. Pleasantly cold and the lemon is there but not overpowering. Second pass much the same as the first.
Third lather. Like sticking my face in a deep freezer. Seriously, where's my coat? It's still a nice feeling, don't get me wrong, but it definitely builds through the shave.

Post Shave:
Shave complete, I rinse down, alum up, and finish with aftershave. The coolness lingers on. Interesting witht the alum, it feels like rubbing your face with a burning ice cube. Menthol coolness stayed with me through the rinse and aftershave, and I would estimate another 30-40 minutes post shave.

One thing of note, using a sharp blade and a fairly aggressive razor, after the first pass you pretty much feel menthol so it's a bit difficult to gauge pressure on the skin. I advise caution.

Summary: Exactly what I was looking for. I like the fact the lemon is not too potent and I thoroughly enjoyed the cooling menthol. Definitely a recommend from me.

Cleaning up vintage Gillette razor

That blue-green residue is verdigris. Try removing with a light acid, such as ketchup, and a toothbrush. You can also attack with baking soda and water. Add just a few, tiny grains of baking soda to some distilled water and dissolve. Soak the razor in the solution for a few minutes and again, attack with a toothbrush, toothpick, or dental pick.

Mystery Aristocrat ?

I have a mint condition Gold Aristocrat that has no date code on it. On the bottom it just says "REGUS PATOFF" (that is across the top of the bottom.. Underneath it has a small diamond Gillette symbol(left side)and across from that is just says "madeinusa. Inside under blade hold it says "(unknown)on package". Can anyone give me some info on this?
