How about the CoolPix P900?

Zoom and time-lapse are fun digi-cam features, but I was surprised at this level of zoom and image stabilization for the price. I am happy with my current camera but is this becoming the norm or has Nikon gotten far ahead?

Made in America watches?

So lately I've become a little tired of looking at my Swiss Army Infantry Mechanical. There's nothing wrong with it I've just been staring at the damn thing since 2005. While looking at different brands I saw there allot of buzz about some startups that are trying to bring watch making back to the U.S. Below ill post a link from a Newsweek article. So far the one I'm looking at hard is Minuteman Watches.

Maggard Razors MR18 - for ladies?

After my new DE shave adventure, SWMBO decided to take the plunge as well! After some shopping around, over two web sites because, well, it's her... She settled on a Maggard MR18 open comb and a small bundle of Stirling Witchy Woman soaps and lotions (apparently that's one of her favorite fragrances or something). I'm just hoping that this turns out well. I already told her that I'd take the razor off her hands if she gives it the old college try and sincerely doesn't like it, she can keep using the Stirling soaps products anyways. Can any women, or their consorts, weigh in on razor selections for women's shaving? What is usually preferred, as far as razor - blade combinations go, etc? Thanks.

New Steward PIF

This has been a big few weeks for me. I have crossed the 3,000 post line (I'm at 3,400 now, so over due), I have been given the privilege to serve you all as your new Steward (If I can help anyone just drop me a PM), and lastly but the best of all I am now a Grandfather for the first time (check out my avatar).

To celebrate this great event I am going to PIF a user grade Gillette Slim! Yes you heard that right a fine example of American engineering, a fully adjustable and, according to eBay,a RARE! Gillette Slim. I just bought this off on the Gentlemanly Deal section and the seller will ship directly to the winner. No phoney baloney middle men involved here! So here it this grand prize:

Since this is being shipped from the seller, I'm not going to take advantage of him on the shipping, so CONUS. Other than that anyone can join in. That is right, no minimum post needed here.
Just say "I'm in" and since I'm going to be called Opa either post what your grand-kids call you or what you called your grandfather.

This PIF will run till the 11:59 Tuesday night. So the winner will be announced sometime on July 1st.

Newbie Coffee Roaster: Skillet vs. Air Popper

A few weekends ago, TLML took me to her sister's baby shower in KC. After the obligatory helping get the party ready, by brother-in-law and I ran away as fast as possible and ended up at the Rosterie, a local coffee roaster/coffee house chain. Turned out it was fitting as I have been toying with the idea on roasting our own beans at home. According to them, air roasting provides a far superior end product due to the even consistency in the roasting. The local coffee shops that roast their own beans all do so in a conventional roaster and seems to say that works best for them. And now the quandary.

I have a flat top gas powered two burner Coleman camp stove that I was going to fire up and just keep agitating the beans with a whisk or other tool in either a cast iron skillet or dutch oven. I like this idea as it gives me ease to set up and tear down outside. The other option would be to find an old popcorn air popper and extension cord at a garage sale. I have seen a few around for a few dollars at most varying in size from 1150 watts to 1400 watts. One of the questions that I would have on this is whether everything would have to be timed as I would think the noise from the blower/heater would make it difficult to hear the beans crack.

Which method have you used and why is it your preferred? Anyone tried both? What size of Air Roaster are you using and what would be an average time to roast?

Pomades - where can I buy it?

Hi Folks,

In August I'm going tot travel to Florida. It's my first trip to the USA. I heard that you find lots of Pomades in Supermarkets an Drugstores. That sounds interesting to me, because here in germany it seems, you can get them only via Internet. So my question is: Where can i find pomades? Any suggestions?

Thank you for helping me

Newbie Checking In

Hi everyone

I'm Glen, 50, and just had my 3rd wet shave this morning.

I made the change a week ago and bought:

  • Merkur 34C
  • Sampler blade pack
  • DR Harris Windsor cream
  • Truefitt and Hill 1805 after shave
  • Muhle shaving bowl.
  • Muhle synthetic brush.

What a different experience this is. I'm using the Merkur blades at the moment and achieving a perfect shave, no nicks whatsoever, although I'm looking forward to trying the other blades too. Loving the Windsor cream, what a great scent.
Shaving really has become an enjoyable luxury instead of a quick chore.

Anyway, hi to everyone.

Glen

Question about shaving

Two weeks now with iKon Shavecraft 102.
Very smooth and close shave with no irritation, I have very coarse and thick beard.
Two pass and a little touchups it's all I need.
The question is why I can't achieve same result with Razorock Mission. I do three or four passes but never fell the same.
it's something about my technique or because 102 is a slant?

P.S Waiting for Razorock Stealth Slant v4 to arrive and a vintage Wardonia. Don't know what to expect from Wardonia.

TTO forgot to TTC

After cleaning up my newly acquired C4 Gillette TTO, I decided to give it a whirl. There was a bit of a learning curve compared to my Merkur 38c. A couple of minor nicks on my face but it was all good. Moving to my scalp, however, was a different story. In an effort to keep the blade clean, I opened it several times to rinse out the hair and lather gunk. On one occasion I forgot to close t down very well. It didn't take long to feel the washboarding of the blade across my head as the blood began to flow. Lesson learned as I scrounge around for some hats to wear this week.

Wounded Fat Boy Recovers!

Some of you may remember a previous thread of mine detailing my Wounded Fat Boy - an F3 that had it's original plating pierced by a bullet frag in Vietnam ;-)

After weighing options, I decided to send it off to Chris at RazorPlate to see what could be done. Well, let's just say I have no words to describe what Chris was able to do. I'll just let the pictures speak for themselves....

The first picture shows the razor after being stripped. Second picture is after being prepped for new plating, and the last two pictures are, well, amazing....

Floppies ?

Most seem to like perky ; any floppy fans here ?
I recently acquired a Plisson European Gray 10 that's a slight bit floppy , but I like .
Though can't say I'm a convert just yet .
I still prefer when they give me a bit more backbone .
So , any floppy fans ?

Floppies ?

So, what about that shavecalypse.

Do we actually see any signs of it, or is it more conjecture at this point? Are people in emerging markets beginning to switch to expensive cartridges? There ought to be signs because for other products this change is happening already (meat, consumer electronics, etc.).

Did I Tighten My EJ DE89 Too Much?

OK, this may be a bit (very?) OCD, but I noticed today that top of my EJ Kelvin (DE89 head) has a slight concavity too it. I've never really noticed this before, which has me thinking perhaps I tightened it too much and it drew the top down a bit. Is that even possible?

Again, it is fairly slight and you only really pick it up in the reflections across the top, which curve a bit where the threaded post is attached. Perhaps all EJ DE89 heads are like this? More likely I'm just overthinking it... and as long as it keeps shaving great, I should just continue on :thumbup1:

Look What's Brewing At The Daimon Barber!

Gents, the busy bees at The Daimon Barber have not been lazing the days away. I noticed a few months ago when I visited their site they had a few more No. products on their pages but only listed as "coming soon". Well some of them have arrived and some are on their way! They are certainly one of the most interesting hair dressing companies around and work with both traditional products and new school water based formulas. I am including a link to their page and you should visit the yourself and look over the product page. http://ift.tt/1oVnily

I cannot help but link a few images from their website as well. Full credit and ownership to Daimon Barber. These are not my photos.

Image size limitation?

Whenever I upload some images, I see that the size of the image shrinks in half and the size in kilobytes is greatly compressed. Is that the norm?

I love the Gold Dollar

I promised a review of it a few weeks ago in my thread about how much the Kriegar was a disappointment.

I wanted to get a few shaves in with it, about a week or two, before reviewing, but, I had an ear infection, so didn't shave at all.

I've used it maybe four, or, five times.

I love it, it's great, it's awesome.

I do better in certain areas than other.

I'm growing a full beard, and do, when I get to my cheeks, I stop before going all the way down. This leads to some irritation. Should I try to start my stroke higher? I'm typically careful of angle, but, I think it might be too steep. I still haven't cut or nicked myself, knock on wood.

Anyway, I think I'm doing okay, apart from the irritation just above my beard. I feel like I got the hang of it. I'm not an expert, yet, but, I think I got the hang of it.

Anyone else use the combination shave?

I use a straight to shave my head exclusively. When I use it on my face, however, it's a bit uncomfortable. I'm sure my cheap Chinese sharpening stones, my cheap eBay strop and my poor usage of each have a lot to do with it as I find myself having to hit the stones more often than usual. I also have a deadly shavette that I use on occasion but as my straight collection increases, it has been seeing less usage of late. My compromise lately has been to use the straight on my head and my birth year Black Beauty DE for a couple of passes on my face. I then use the remaining lather in the brush on my face and continue to clean it up with a final pass with my straight. I find this to be a great setup resulting in a great shave with no discomfort. I normally use this setup every second day with just standard DE face shaves in between.

Feather AS D2 vs Blackbird razor

Guys, can you recommend me which razor should i get? The Feather AS D2 or the upcoming Blackbird razor from the kickstarter?

This Morning

I was out walking the dog around our complex. Suddenly I heard this very loud tapping. A Northern Flicker was to drill into the siding. Then he went to the light pole, a Downy and Hairy Woodpecker joined the Flicker. Nothing beats juicy bugs for breakfast if are a bird.

Found An Aristocrat, Now I Wait

A friend of my wife's alerted her to some razors available on a local Facebook swap 'n shop site so the wife showed me the pictures. One was a Gem single-edge and the other was an Aristocrat still in the case sold as a pair for $15.

The Aristocrat case is pretty rough, but from the rather crude and small cell phone photo, the Aristocrat doesn't look too bad. I let the wife deal with all this since I don't do Facebook and she did ask and the he said the doors on the Aristocrat open and it is functional. I'm hoping it falls into the "it just needs a good cleaning" category.

Definitely worth a blind buy for $15. We live 30 miles away so the seller is going to drop it off at the antique store where the wife has a booth and my wife will get it tomorrow when she goes to work. I'm off tomorrow, so I'll have to wait 2 days here to see what I got.

I wasn't particularly looking for an Aristocrat, but if one falls into my hands like this, I'll take it. If the condition is not what I expect, I'm only out $15.

I wasn't really that interested in the Gem, but it comes in a cool white plastic compartmentalized box and both the razor and box look to me in excellent shape. Who knows? It might get me started with single-edge shaving. You can still find blades for them can't you?

Checking in from Australia

Hi all,

I'm a newb to DE shaving having just picked up a microtouch one a week ago as it's cheap and has good reviews for beginners. I have been interested in wet shaving for quite some time now and been using creams and soaps. Gotta say loving the DE, just need more practice before I shave the noggin with it. Haha

Best Masculine Rose-scented Eau de Parfum

So, my other thread got me thinking. My one cologne can be used wearing anything from pajamas to a business suit, and, all points between. But, if I ever had reason to wear a tux (and I have before, so, I might, again) I'd want to dress up the scent as well.

I remember there was one that was all-the-rage back in the 80's. I can't quite put my finger on the name, though.

Any help at all would be appreciated.

Razor Burn!

Just wanted to share something with my fellow Wet Shave Newbs. I've been Wet Shaving for about 3 months now? Anyways I started getting some gnarly razor burn all of a sudden. I couldn't figure out why at first but I finally identified the culprit. Its me! Lol over time ive become more comfortable with my new shaving routine and I noticed myself falling into a bad habit. I noticed ive been pushing down on my DE instead of letting the weight of the razor do the work. If this starts happening to you keep this in mind. Also...this may sound like a Wet Shaving sin but once I figured out what I was doing wrong I used Barbasol with Aloe until it cleared up and it worked GREAT! I keep a can of Barbasol in my medicine cabinet for when im in a bit of a hurry and for me its a faster shave than using the old cartridge shaver because I don't have to bang the damn thing on the edge of my sink to unclog the friggen blades every other pass. With a good DE razor a swish or two in water clears your blade. Like I said I just wanted to share this observation in case anyone else runs into this problem. Good luck fellas!

Artisan vs Mass Produced

I've really gravitated toward artisan soaps with fewer ingredients that are also more natural (particularly Stirling). The shave quality and skin conditioning is quite impressive. Now I have all the more commercial software I started with sitting around. I consider using them periodically but then often reconsider after reviewing the ingredient list, which look like a chemistry experiment.

My question is whether other gents tend to omit the more 'synthetic' products after discovering 'purer' soaps, as's and such. Maybe I'm just thinking too much [emoji41]

Artisan vs Mass Produced

What on earth is this?

I got this from a store and it was marked as a Gillette vintage razor. After looking around I am not so sure. Could the head be a Merkur? Any ideas? Please see the pictures.

Thanks,
Doug

Cheap Container for Saponificio Varesino Soap Puck

In case anyone is interested, I managed to fit my Saponificio Varesino Manna di Sicilia puck into an IKEA 'Grundtal' metal magnetic container. It needed a little bit of convincing, but it fit nicely. A few shavings flaked off the edge while pressing it through the mouth of the container, but I was able to use them for this mornings shave.

These containers have a magnetic back and a clear cover and are a lot cheaper than a wood bowl (but not as nice).

Scuttle Venders on B&B?

I'm looking to try a scuttle, I'd like to give my business to someone on B&B, and hopefully get a better scuttle in the process. I bowl lather if that would help lean me towards the proper vender/scuttle.

First shave with a slant!

Yesterday I got myself a slant, ye olde Merkur 37c. I live in Chicago, so I was able to grab it form Merz, which meant I was able to compare it to the 39c hand-in-hand. I think I liked the handle length better of the 39c, but the latter was much smoother, and felt slippery dry, didn't want to imagine it wet.....and it was an extra ten bucks, so I abstained.

Anyways, I also treated myself to my first D.R. Harris soap (I went with Windsor....I tried my hardest to get some kind of scent from Arlington in the store, but couldn't smell a thing, and Windsor smelled delicious, so went with the proven commodity)- holy mackerel that's a nice soap. Lathered easily, beautifully. So protective; in short, it's reputation is well-deserved.

Back to the razor/shave: It was good! That's what I'll say. I got a seriously smooth shave, but my face definitely felt a little more raw than I appreciated afterwards (I had loaded a new Gillette 7 O'clock black, did two passes, WTG, XTG). The alum stung pretty good, but the Lucky Tiger/Nivea applications smoothed things over....just needed a little extra of those. I got no irritation in my typical trouble spot, the lower right portion of my neck (though I had a bit of a technique breakthrough a few weeks ago that's keep me pretty good there), but oddly enough the sides of my chin were a bit raw. Not cuts or weepers though. All in all I'm excited about the razor. I'll have to figure out the angle and technique a little better, I reckon, as well as blade combos, but it will more than likely be in my rotation, especially if I let my face go for a few days. I'm excited to see if it can be an every day shaver.
