Myth busted! Kai blade NOT super thick!

It has long been said that Kai blades are extra thick, super thick, or the thickest blades. This thinking might have started from what is stated at a major website, where Kai apparently sells their blades stating, "Made of a thicker gauge steel than other brands . . ." Is this true? Let's take a look at the new DE Razor Blade Dimensions Table in the ShaveWiki!

According to the table, which is based on rigorous measurements...

a stiffer synth?

When I purchased my Muhle Black Fiber (HJM, actually, I was after the ergos of that shaped handle) I was enthralled by the softness of the knot. I later purchased a Satin Tip The Purest and have appreciated it being a bit.. stiffer, though still very soft. And now i want something that is stiffer yet - something that feels scrubbier but is not scritchy, has backbone and a soft tip.
I dont' mind being aggressive in splaying to get a good scrub if it works ( I really abuse the Satin Tip...

WTT/WTS Mudder Focker & Son of Zeus

I have lightly used containers of each, that just don't appeal to me. My sense of smell stinks, literally, since breaking my nose years ago. Party of the shave experience for me is the glorious smell, and I simple can barely smell these, and don't really bother to use them.

They were originally 4.2oz or approx 120g of soap. I can only weigh them with the bottom of the container, lids removed, so there a little weight from the container bottoms. The Mudder Focker currently weighs 129g,...

It's 2017, where are we with BBQ thermometers?

After 4+ years my Maverick ET-732 died on me last weekend before I put my ribs on the smoker. The sending unit wouldn't power on, and the weekend before it was dropping the connection with the receiver multiple times an hour even after changing the batteries. Are these still the go to model for a duel probe setup or has something better come along?

Where to get replacement cartridges and tip

I got a cheap fountain pen from ebay. It has a screw on top with the nib. The nib says "iridium point Paris" and has a "2" with a circle around it. The nib doesn't seem to come out.

Anyone know where to get refillable cartridges and the screw on part with the nib?

Thanks.

return to shaving after 3-year beard.

I grew a beard when I moved flat three years ago, and just shaved it off on a whim last weekend. There's less room in this place, so I'm starting again with the very basics*. It's strange seeing my face again! And also when leaning on my arm at the table, to suddenly feel skin again. I don't even have a routine of where to shave yet. I'll try to get used to shaving without a mirror in the shower, which would be easiest. But there was always something traditional about facing the mirror of a...

I’m on sabbatical this year, but would like to try a few possible candidates for use so that I’m ready to buy in January. I’m looking for things that (a) have a little bit of sting/burn to them, (b) have face-healing ingredients – that is, more than just alcohol and scent – and (c) have nice scents that only last 10-15 minutes.

By way of background, I’m currently using Myrsol Antesol...

Blade 'hack' for Wilkinson Sword Empire razors

Hi all,

I know others use the original blades with their Empire razors (I have some but wanted to leave them in their packaging) and others use a Gem blade with the spine removed and some other modifications. I was bored and noodling around so I used a variation of the original 'hack'.

I removed the spine very carefully (prying it open with a utility knife/box cutter) and removed the blade, cut the blade in half, and then I reinserted the blade into the spine. I carefully used pliers to...

Well, I decided to turn a piece of scrap wood that was given to me into a brush handle. Not a medium I'm used to working with. I tend to destroy it, but got lucky this time around.
I really love the grain and color of this wood as well, I just wish I knew what kind it is. No stains or colors added, I only sealed it after sanding it. It's natural colors are absolutely beautiful!
I set a 24mm VS finest badger into it.

The heat

So I usually shave less during summer months due to irritation from heat. Is there a special balm any of you use to help with this. I've been using Kistna aftershave balm lately. It has been good. Just curious if anyone has had any luck with a product that is helpful. I shave at night to get a few hours in before I go out to work in the heat. When I leave in the morning face is fine. It's after a few hours in the heat that my face becomes irritated. Any suggestions are welcome.

Smelling from the other side....

Tonight, as I put my son to sleep, I noticed that he smelled really good. Not the normal five year old smell, but a nice cologne smell. I asked him what he put on and he was very bashful, and thought he was in trouble. Once I was able to get him to understand that I wasn't mad, just concerned that he was playing in my stuff, I was able to get him to show me what he used.....and it was the PAA Deja Fougere aftershave! Am I the only one who does not like frozen

I was told I needed to eat more seafood. I live in a small tourist town in the high desert of Arizona. All the seafood is commercially frozen or previously commercially frozen. I just don't like the taste. Frozen shrimp is fine, but not fish.

Am I missing something? On the off chance I get my hands on fresh seafood it is awesome and if I lived where it was common there is no doubt I would be eating it a lot.

Is there a way to make it more palatable, less fishy?

Muhle R89 vs EJ DE89 finish?

I've read the posts on comparing the similarities and differences of these 2 razors. From what I gather the finish on the Muhle is better than the EJ but I'm wondering how this equates to the longevity of the respective finishes. I have several older Gillettes but I'd like to try something new to compare them to.

I really enjoy eating a spicy hot bowl of curry from time to time, and then I saw this article today and thought it was interesting enough that others might like to read it as well. It doesn't go into a great deal of depth, but it did provide some information i didn't know about curry.

Serrations on front of rail?

Hey all, I'm fairly new to firearms so pardon the dumb question, if it is one.

I see that Glock is going to sell some handguns with serrations on the front of the slide. What's the point to this? Are the rear slide serrations not sufficient?

Wilkinson Sword SE Challenge

Pictured above is a Wilkinson Sword 7 Day Empire set circa 1936-1952. This razor takes proprietary blades which are hollow ground like that of a straight edge razor. When I purchased this set ($24) the blades were covered in grease and in great shape, though I did have them individually checked and re-honed.

This is without doubt one of the coolest looking razors ever made - it has an industrial, steam-punk look to it like no other razor. I have enjoyed shaving with this magnificent beauty...

WTS/WTT Dovo inox 3/8 white Resin scales

Hi guys, I have a Dovo inox in 3/8 that I'd like to move,

It is not shave ready though I don't think it's far out, but honing is unfortunately not a skill I have yet. It did shave some hair on my arm pretty easily.

I would be willing to trade for a nice shave ready 5/8 or 6/8 razor or something like a feather non folding razor or one of its clones with some blades.

Otherwise I'll take €70 Shipped internationally, I'm based in Ireland....

Shaving Creams for sensitive skin: Elave

I don't get out much lol, but i noticed these sensitive skin shaving products in my local chemist today. I've used Elave products on myself and my Children and it is excellent stuff when your skin is flaring/sensitive.

I haven't used the shave gel though and i don't see many reviews on it, so this is a FYI and "Have you used this" in the same thread.

Ink usage 3017?

When I first got interested in fountain pens several years ago I went a bit crazy on ink acquisition. I have enough ink that I have no doubts about being able to use it up in my lifetime. I suspect that my son (also uses a fountain pen) will inherit my ink stash and he will be hard pressed to use it up.

I have been 3017ing my shave soap since I began using a DE. I have come to the realization that 3017 seems to be creeping into other aspects of my life as well. I 3017 my AS, blades, and...

Simpson Shedding Problem

I have a Duke 3 that I really like - it's currently my favorite brush - but it sheds anywhere between 0 and 5 hairs per shave. I've tried the usual remedies, and I've written to Simpson's. I received a very polite reply, but the bottom line is "We would not consider hair loss of approximately 1 – 5 bristles per shave to be consistent with a manufacturing defect or an inherent fault."

I've had the brush almost 4 months and cannot return it to the seller, so that isn't an option. I know...

Brush Handle

So I've decided to build a custom 30mm brush....I like large dense brushes. I'm the DIY type, and have a 3D Printer, see where this is going. I've printed several brush handles, and have narrowed down my build tho two of them, but can't make up my mind. For this that hand tried different handles, which would you use and why?

The one on the right it's big, I mean big, but the left seems pretty darn good in the hand. Here the are with the knot inserted... It's a 30mm from Virginia....

Shaving With Olive Oil

I just read an article about shaving with olive oil and was wondering if any of you have tried it. The benefits of olive oil for the skin are pretty well known and I'm curious as to how true this for the more sensitive skin of the face. And, of course, how effective it is for actually shaving.

Unhappy with Maggard, what's the alternative?

Bought a V3 head from Maggard. It's deformed, bigger on one side than the other. See photo: http://ift.tt/2sgbj9V

Maggard offered to replace it with another but I've totally lost confidence in their stuff.

Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced alternative head? Thanks. Also recommend the best value for money stainless head, just for reference (handle is stainless, be good to match). Moderate shaving, not aggressive.

Shaving Station - Cool Dude - Aftershave Balm

Hello Folks!

Today I tried new aftershave balm from Shaving Station called as Cool Dude, It has essential oils of peppermint and spearmint alongwith beeswax, Though I prefer aftershave lotion to aftershave balm but this one comes as nice surprise to me, It's cooling sensation stays for about 30-40 mins and has provided me with some respite in Indian summer heat. The scent is reminiscent of Wrigley's spearmint chewing gum but doesn't stay long.

6/5 Birthday PIF

It's been a while since I've given back to B&B, so I figure my birthday is a good time. Up for grabs is a razor, a few soaps, likely including Cella or Arko, and LA Toja, and a handful of Stirling aftershave samples. As much as I can fit into a flat-rate box.

For the razor, the winner can choose between a Van Der Hagen TTO or a GEM Featherweight. I'll toss in a few blades.

The razors are in good condition, freshly cleaned, and the software has all been used just a couple of times...

Mineral based sunscreen for arms and legs?

Does anyone have a recommendation for a sunscreen, preferably zinc oxide based, that works well on the hairier areas of the body such as the arms and legs when I'll be in the sun for an extended period? I'm very happy with the Thinksport sunscreen for my face and use it there every day after shaving, but it doesn't spread out as easily as I would like on the arms and legs. I tend to have dry skin and maybe something suspended in a light oil would work well.

Some questions about getting started

Hi folks,

I have always put off shaving because I didn't like doing it. Leaves me raw. I've alternated between cartridge razors and electric over the years and never really been happy with either. I'm curious about switching to a safety razor, both for my face/neck and for my head, but I have two questions:

1. What equipment (and how high of quality) do I have to have to determine that this is or isn't for me?
2. How long do I have to keep at it to determine that this is or isn't for me?...

Gillette tolerances and quality control

I'm curious if any of the newer safety razors have better tolerance's and quality control than the old Gillette's. I've read about some of the older European razors being better but don't know if that's true. To me the old three piece tech razors should provide the best tolerances and better quality control.

Poor quality Maggard razor disappoints

I ordered a Maggard razor with a V3 Standard head, billed as having "no noticeable differences in quality" compared to the "big brands", to quote Maggard's own website.

The reality was disappointing.

I assembled the razor and inserted an Astra blade. It was immediately apparent to me, just using the naked eye, that while the blade sat exactly square and parallel on one side of the head, on the other side it jutted out more on one end that the other.

today was a sad day. Could not go much further with the little bit of soap in my mug. I took the small piece out and smooshed in a new one. Memorial Day Brushes 2017

I thought getting 3 new brushes is also a good way to celebrate Memorial Day.
Rudy Vey (Ultimate Pen Design) was helpful in getting the major tool work done and the 2 fan knots are 2 of his new 2-bands (26mm). The bulb is a 30mm TGN finest.

The odd shape of the cylindrical horn pieces didn't allow Rudy to turn the surface as usual. I went at these with the belt sander myself to give them a little more character. I set the knots myself with 5min epoxy, a slice of cork to adjust the loft....

Brush Fail

I cast some sweet gum pods in polyester resin to make this brush, unfortunately it didn't turn out as I hoped. Using a cylindrical vertical mold just doesn't work, next time I'll use my block molds. The problem is you can't cram the pods in the vertical mold like you can a block mold, and it takes a lot to get a good effect. They also seem to stay in the middle of the blank where they never get shown off. It still looks decent, but far from what I hoped to get.

Proraso Azure Lime First Impressions

I just used this balm after shaving today. I thought I'd share a few quick thoughts. I'd describe the scent as modern fresh. Think Acqua Di Gio. The notes I smell are Lime, Vetiver and Mint. It pairs well with Proraso Green soap/cream. I like how the heavy glass bottle looks. It has no pump, but the flow control dispenses tiny drops which go a long way.

Super-Max Blue Diamond Titanium blades

Just finished the first one, these are nice blades! I've only used them on my head shave so far, I've been using SE razors on my face.

These are not the sharpest blades around or the longest lasting blades. I was only able to get 15 BBS head shaves out of one, the 15th shave took a lot of work. These are nice and smooth and very capable.

I was given 2 of these blades, after 2 shave with the first one, I ordered some more.

Working up a hot lather using shave cream

Hi, newbie here to safety razors (but not to wet shaving).

One of the main reasons I started using safety razors (and the whole thing about taking the shave more seriously) was a desire to shave with a hot lather (like the barbershop).

Right now I'm using a Cremo horsehair brush to lather up shave cream (not Cremo!) in a re-purposed coffee cup, using hot water.

Issue - the lather comes on hot on the face, then loses all heat. I'm aware the lather can only be as hot as the hottest water I...

Right now, I'm living in a handyman's special in a not so great area.

ATT Calypso M1 or R1?

Hi all,

I have already decided that in the nearby future, I will purchase an ATT Calypso razor.
It will be the only safety razor I will have left. It will be used head shaving an the occasional evening I cant be bothered to grab a straight.
Since I will be focusing on straights and honing, I just want one safety razor, but that one has to be sublime, so ATT seems the right choice.

At the moment, I love my Giesen & Forsthoff (Timor) DE razor, a friend of mine said it is very very like a...

Help identifying a razor

While visiting my parents this weekend, I was looking at some of my mom's antiques and noticed an old safety razor. I'm still in the process of learning about vintage razors so was unable to identify this one by year. I cleaned it up with some Scrubbing Bubbles and I think I saw the Gillette logo under some of the rust and corrosion, though I'm not 100% certain. If anyone can tell make/model/year by the attached pictures, I would appreciate it.

Kai Captain Reviews

I've been looking online and there do not seem to many reviews on the Kai Captain. I have been wanting a feather DX for some time but it seems to much money for what it is.
So I took the plunge and ordered a Kai Captain.
From what I can tell most people rate the Artist Club DX is the next best thing to a real straight. And the Kai Captain seems to be a very close second.
Anyone with first hand reviews on the regular plastic handled Kai?
Also any blade preferences in this particular razor?

Stirling fan vs. bulb

I just ordered a handful of Stirling soap samples and afterward started browsing their hardware. They sound like solid brushes, but I'm still pretty new to all of this; are there advantages/disadvantages to the two types, or like so many things does it come down to personal preference?

I've been using a Vulpix pure badger that seems to get the job done, but I'm always in the market to upgrade when the price is right.

So I am makeing my way through all my soaps...

So I am making my way through my soaps, it really does help that I am shaving twice a day, and I am finding out that while a citrusy, sort of floral soap is nice in the shower, I am not liking them as a sent for a shaving soap. Don't get me wrong, I do like the smell, but after my shave I find myself wishing I had used Tabac or RasoRock XXX instead. Stirling Shaving soaps perform incredibly, I just really like the cent of Tabac and XXX more (for shaving).

Questions About Seasoning a Stainless Steel Pan

I have seen videos on YouTube, on how to do it, and I even went to the market to buy Safflower Oil to season my All Clad Stainless Steel pans with because of its high smoke point. I wonder if doing so, would make a difference...

Is there a better oil to season a Stainless Steel pan with?

How many times should I season the pan?

Once the pan is seasoned, will I have to add any oil?

Should I use cooking spray (canola oil ) in a can, or is that unnecessary?

Thanks in advance,

Duggo

Pannacrema Nuavia Blu - very first shave impressions

Gents, today, this Sunday morning I did not shave.

I always shave every single weekend morning, ever since becoming addicted to DE's. But not today. Because I was travelling and I knew that waiting for me back home was a newly arrived puck of Nuavia Blu soap.

I've rediscovered Floid

I bought a 400cc bottle of Floid (amber) for my son almost five years ago. Used it once back then, but not since. It hasn't been used in years, as my son moved on to balms and other splashes. Tried it again today, a couple of hours after using Co9T with my shave. I generally avoid menthol, but this has just a touch of it, and the sensation was very pleasing. Hopefully, I can talk my son into PIFing it to me. Love the scent. :thumbup1:

What is the usefulness of aftershaves, and what should I consider?

As someone who is thinking about picking up DE safety razors, I've been thinking about what materials to buy. Because I'm a poor college student who is also saving for a vacation this summer, I also want something that is effective at a low price. I planned on getting a cheaper razor and probably Barbasol shaving cream because it's what my grandfather uses, and I hear its good. However, I've looked at aftershaves, and quickly found that I have no idea what it's used for, and how it could...

Better results with cold water

Hello. I shave with an Edwin Jagger 89 DE, a Whipped Dog silvertip brush and Palmolive shave cream. I've noticed that when I shave with cold water(cold shower and wet the brush with cold water), I get less irritation and razor burn. I do 3 passes(with the grain, across the grain and across the grain in the opposite direction). What is the explanation for this?

I have been using my new Hyperion razor this week. It is one of the Artisan Series, designed in collaboration with Brian Twilley of Charcoal Goods. They are all of stainless steel, made by the Computer Numerical Control (CNC) process.

I like this razor a lot. It has a last-a-lifetime feel to it, which (IMHO) is helped by the solid three-piece design. The Hyperion is well-balanced and just the right weight for my preference. It is not an especially aggressive razor. If you are, say, a...

A 125 Year Old Enterprise Coffee Grinder

It could even be older. A Enterprise #7 with a patent date of Oct 21, 1878. I have had and been using for 25 years. It has never failed to deliver a consistent grind. Has a thumb screw to adjust pressure on the burr plates. Tighten the screw till it locks up, loosen 45 degrees for expresso, 90 for drip and 135 degrees for FP. Once the wheel it turning, it tears thru the beans. A nice piece of history that still works great.

I'm a casual race fan, but I always try to catch this race. I've been to this race twice, in '71 and '76 (Al Unser repeated in '71, Johnny Rutherford won his second in '76). I have family in town, so having somewhere to stay is never a problem. It is a tremendous spectacle, and a great experience.

As I write this, there's a red flag on lap 56, after a horrific crash that totalled two cars. Thankfully, the drivers appear to be fine.

I did a search and the newest Yatagan thread is several years old so here goes...

My wife is very sensitive to smells, she HATES vanilla, and many fragrances I've tried. She typically likes aqua/oceanic scents that are popular right now, so with all that in mind, I'd hesitated to try out Yatagan on her.

Well, last evening, since it was later in the day and the odds of giving her a headache were less, I sprayed some on, let it dry down, then asked for her opinion.

Lamy EF nib shortage

Lamy is no longer selling EF nibs in the U.S. The company said it is selling to its maximum manufacturing capacity, and worldwide demand is also maxed out. Lamy will only sell EF nibs in Germany (its home country, so OK) and Asia. Lamy is essentially telling North American customers that we aren't as important as Asia.

I'm not a business guy, so here is my question: If you are selling all the products you can manufacture, does it matter who the end buyer is?

Why not keep both markets...

Canadian 1936 Aristocrat?

Hey Fellas,

From what I understood, Gillette never actually made TTOs in their Montreal plant but rather made the cases and stuffed them with either US or UK razors.

I saw this on eBay and couldn't let it go as i've been on a Canadian razor collecting kick here for the past few months. Low and behold a Canadian marked Aristocrat case. Seller confirmed that the razor itself is US marked which is supported by other TTOs (Rockets come to mind) being made elsewhere.
