Goodwill Confirmation and Check Out This Handle!

I picked up a Goodwill this weekend; after scanning through several B&B threads I have come to the conclusion that it is a late 1931 model. If there are any Goodwill experts out there that could confirm that date I would greatly appreciate it.

On another note, when I found the Goodwill it was attached to the monster handle shown in the pics below. The handle itself measures just over 5.5" long!!!

Alternative to Tabac

Ive been using Tabac AS 4x a week and Clubman (cut down 1/3 with water) on Fridays. I work in a cubicle and I like by time i get to work, its a skin scent only but lasts for half day or more like that. Now Im bored and want a diff AS with a diff classic scent and just as much longevity. Ive got Brut, AV, SB but dont wear them to work as they seem too obvious drug store scents and they also lack the Tabac/Clubman longevity. I just try those on weekends. Im looking for a new scent for work days thats not floral, rum or musk, but smells classic, refined and has longevity. Im thinking maybe a Fine or Stirling AS, neither of which ive tried. What comes most to mind? Stirling might be better as maybe its got more skin friendly stuff that ive read is absent than Fine, i dont know. I find Clubman and SB skin friendly. (Ive got glycerine I could add if that helps. I bought glycerine to add to Clubman then learned it already has glycol.) The citrus Clubmans arent ideal for me as I read they lack longevity. Im thinking more along the lines of the AS that resemble Riv Gauche or GIT.

Challenge Safety Razor

I found a Challenge Safety Razor/Strop set in decent condition today. After a little cleanup I gave it a spin (along with some 70's era Williams soap which I also picked up today). The razor handled well however the wedge blade definitely needs a little tune up. The vintage Williams supplied some great lather and a nice shave. I ended up finishing up with an Ever-Ready Lather Catcher but I look forward to getting proficient with the Challenge razor. (Although not shown in the attached pics, the razor handle telescopes to the length of a normal handle)

Introduction

Question about Stirling Soap Containers

Are the green containers Stirling comes in wide like CRSW and Mike's or are they smaller in diameter like Cella? I ask because if they are smaller I may just order a puck as that might be easier to load my brush with. I could never really get a great load from Cella because of the container. Thanks!

Question about Stirling Soap Containers

can't find sweet spot.

Hello everyone,
This is my first time posting (although I have been happily utilizing this forum for several months now). My question involves lather. My problem is that I can't seem to find the "sweet spot" with any of my lather attempts. When I first make my lather, i typically notice that it drys out on my face during the first pass so i slowly add more water to my brush. No matter how much water I add, the lather seems to at least partially dry on my face until eventually I add too much water and the lather dissipates into a sad nothingness. Does anyone else have this problem? (i typically use Trumper shave creams and B&M soaps.) Thanks in advance for any help!

starting to get it

It seems like after a bit of learning I reached a "lightbulb" moment and now I'm consistently getting no bleeders.

Two days back I realized I can apply pressure (controlled and light) without causing irritation. Its amazing how you can learn with practice. When I first started my face was a bleeding, blotchy, razor burned mess. Now I'm consistently getting DFS with no irritation.

Still not getting BBS but it may come. Doesn't matter too much as each shave seems to be a slight improvement over the last.

starting to get it

Celebration PIF.

I have some happenings in my life that I want to celebrate with a PIF. My wife and I just celebrated our 45th anniversary, I just had my 66th birthday, I am now semi employed 35-40 hrs. vs. 50-60 , and finally I just went over 300 posts.
The soaps are
5- Eva Nestrova goats milk soap. the labels are gone, your on your own,

Mike's natural Barbershop tin and bar.

And most of a tub of Trumpers Rose cream.
All soaps have been used at least once.

I'd like to sell as a lot but if there are no buyers after 24 Hours I'll repost as individual items.
Excellent Condition:
Above the Tie - H2 Head (2014)
R Head (2012, there is no number following the R, I believe it to be a 1 though)
Kronos Handle
Merkur 39C - "Sledge Hammer"
Merkur Progress (This one almost didn't make the cut, I may miss her)
Great to Good Condition-
1920's Gillette Belmont (With original Packaging and blades, small crack in handle and a very small chip in handle)
1941 Gillette Ranger Tech (No packaging, good condition)
1960 "F2" Gillette Fat Boy (Still has a little *Click* in adjuster)
1966 "L1" Gillette Travel Tech (with original packaging minus blades, NOS when I bought it)
1970 "P4" Gillette Super Adjustable Black Handle (Slight fading to parts of the handle)

I'm still clearing stuff out so I will throw in razors, likely Derby's and Astro's, some soaps and maybe a brush or two as well.

Razors are all in mostly REALLY good shape, the biggest flaw would be the chipped chrome and crack in the Belmont. The 39C and the Kronos were used only a few times, they were all too aggressive for my weak face. Just trying to clear up some room and get a little extra cash for the holidays. It is not my intention to rob anyone so please email me if I am out of line with my price. I went to eBay and looked up what this stuff was going for and tried to set more than fair prices based off of that (I took the low side of the spectrum on each of the razors and added them all together, about $500)

PIF: TTFFCSS Samples

Well, after expectantly waiting for three weeks for these Through the Fire Fine Craft samples to come in (yay for Canada Post stuffing the box in a corner for a week!), it turns out that myself and my husband both react to these soaps and sadly won't be able to use them. But instead of letting them sit in a corner of my bathroom, I'm perfectly willing to ship them off to someone else who wants to give them a try and doesn't have anywhere near as sensitive skin as we do!

First and foremost, for those who might be squeamish, worry not! Neither our fingers or brushes have touched these samples - we used coffee stir sticks to remove some of the soap to do our test lathers, and each stir stick was only used once (so we used four stir sticks). The four we tried were Fougere, Spring Fern, Through the Fire, and Chocolate Orange.

Enclosed for this PIF are the following samples:

Sample pack #1 (Ember, Tinder, Forged, Kindling, Ignite), and then Spring Fern, Fougere, Through the Fire, Quench, and Chocolate Orange

Conditions to enter? Simply that you want to try these shave soaps, although I would prefer to send it to a Canadian address if possible.

PIF: TTFFCSS Samples

Anyone like Mama Bear's Soap? I've heard a lot about it

So I took the plunge and got some soaps from Mama Bear. Normally I use Proraso Green, but decided I needed a change of pace. There is some awesome soaps at great prices, she's even got some on discount. I got Barbershop, Awakening, and bunch of other ones. They smell fantastic and the performance and protection is right up there with higher priced soaps like Tabac.

So, is anyone a fan of her soaps? What's your favorite scent? I am definitely won over by these. Check her out if you need to restock your shave drawer or need Xmas presents. I can tell you what, between the Steam sale and buying soaps from Mama Bear, my wallet is going to be lighter than ever, lol!

Describe your experience with Arturo Fuente Anejo's please.

What should I expect? I really like the Don Carlos line. Are these similar. I have had a few opus X but can't remember much about them. Please describe your experiences in detail for me if you can. Will one smoked right away be fine or should I put them all, if and when I get them, at the bottom of the humidor and soak them for a year? What amount of time aging would be their peak? Any info you fella's have would be greatly appreciated.

Hey there folks,

I've been wanting to get in on the Cold River action, but am hesitant to pull the trigger without having a chance to put them to the sniff test.

Loosen or not to loosen?

Some of the instructions for vintage razors say to loosen the blade after using the razor, presumably to aid in drying. Other vintage razor instructions are silent on this issue.

My guess is loosening the head is for the older razors when carbon steel blades that were prone to rust were the norm. But in more recent years with modern stainless blades there is no need to loosen the head and the blade to facilitate drying.

What is your take on all this? Or is it better to always loosen the razor's head after use to aid in getting ride of residual moisture, regardless of the type of blade?

ordered an ATT S2 but got an S1

I recently ordered an ATT S2 open comb slant razor directly from the ATT website. It arrived rapidly ant it is beautiful. It shaved nicely with no nicks, it is surprisingly mild. My only issue is I ordered an S2 but received the S1 closed comb version. The packing slip says S2 but the head clearly says S1. I sent an email to Stan at ATT to explain the issue last week but have gotten no response on how to exchange for the model that I ordered. I assume that he is busy for the holidays but would appreciate a return message. Please help me Stan.

Thinking Outside the Christmas Meal Wrapped Box

Growing up my family would make the same meals for both Christmas and Thanksgiving. It was Baked Turkey, Ham, cornbread dressing, mashed potatoes, gravy, Brown N Serve rolls and green bean casserole. I always said, "didn't we just have all that?" For the last 20 years I've made it a point to not do that....at all. Christmas is now a free spirit when it comes to meal choices. We've had Cajun boil'em and eat'em shrimp, BBQ of all types, lasagna, venison, hog, Mexican theme's. Last year my Brother boiled some crawfish.

I challenge you to try something different this year. It may mean that you will be bucking a tradition and cause a fight. Sometimes good things are worth fighting for. If you aren't hosting the Christmas meal, show up with a smoked brisket or a rack of lamb and see what happens.

I picked up a box of SV last week at Pasteur's. Finally got to give it a whirl today.

NOTES
Lightly bloomed during shower. Loads easily for a hard soap. Takes some time to make a shave-ready lather. Scent is (to my untrained nose) a classic fougere of the '70s variety. Outstanding cushion, excellent glide, good residual slickness.

RATINGS
Scent: 8 (Wish it smelled more specifically fern-y but still smells great.)
Cushion: 10 (If you cut yourself using this soap, consider growing a full neck-beard.)
Glide: 8
Residual slickness: 7 (Somewhat better than most veggie soaps.)
Overall experience: 9

Review: Saponificio Varesino Aromatic Fern

First shave, first post!

Hello all,
I sort of randomly made the jump to wet shaving. I came across an article about wet shaving on the art of manliness website after reading some article about lifting. I've always used an electric razor on dry skin for my shave. I've always had issues getting a close shave with it, and have frequently had ingrown hairs. I tried shaving with cartridges for a while to get a better shave, but I got so much irritation from them it looked like I shaved my neck with a cheese grater.

So I find this article, and decide to give it a shot. Ended up buying a razor off here before I even had an account (thanks tomharr!), and just had my first shave last night. I made 2 passes (WTG, XTG), and touched up ATG in a few spots, and got probably my smoothest shave i've ever had. I had a little irritation on my neck in one spot, but thats it.

My one question has to do with my lather. I lathered TOBS in a mug using a badger brush. Not sure if I had the right consistency. After it was on my face for a bit (I was shaving pretty darn slow), it dried out a bit and some flakes kept falling off. Looked like a mini snowstorm on my sink. Did I use too much cream, causing it to dry out? Thanks for all the help so far!

PIF - Clearing the stash

I'm putting these items up for PIF because I simply don't use them, have too many, or don't like them. First is a Turkish copper lather bowl from OttomanBarber on Etsy. It is a great bowl, with no dents or damage, I simply just find myself face lathering most of the time. It measures in at just under 5 inches for the interior diameter of the bowl. Next is a Gillette Tech that from what I can tell is Pre-War and all brass, but ever since I got my ATT my other razors have been collecting dust. Then there are two unused bottles of KMF Cool Mint Moisture Shave. I love this stuff and it lathers like a dream but I'm only about 1/5 done with my current bottle and I have another one on deck so I want these to go to a loving home. It has a great peppermint scent for Christmas, too. Finally is some Afta balm by Mennen. I simply can't get over the smell of this stuff. I've used it twice and I immediately can't wait for the scent to go away. But some guys like it. Plus I'm not much of a balm man anyway. Without further ado, just say you're in, tell me a holiday tradition that you do each year, and I'll randomly select a winner tomorrow night and have it shipped out Wednesday morning. My Christmas tradition is watching the 1984 edition of A Christmas Carol on Christmas Eve with my family. We love that movie. Thanks everyone!

2015 B&B Awards.

Hi fellas,
I've been pretty quiet on B&B for some time, and some of the newer folks might not know me, so let me introduce myself - I'm Joel, founder of B&B. Last year I did the first annual B&B awards, and I've been getting a lot of PM's and emails from folks asking if there would be another B&B awards for 2015. I figured it was about time to let the cat out of the bag - yes, there will be, and I've been more ambitious for 2015, enlisted the help of an incredible photographer, added some new categories, and will cover/mention some of runner ups that were also put through the paces.

This year is also different in that all of the text was written by hand on a hardback moleskin using this year's winner in the pen category, which is why you're reading this post instead of seeing the first winner. Talk about eating your own dog food, no? Starting towards the end of this week, they'll be converted from journal, to formatted front page articles, with pics, so stay tuned.

I invested mountain of time, passion and energy, into making this year, even better than last. I really hope you guys enjoy it, and I truly hope I can introduce you to some really special items.

It also seems like a fitting time to mention the backlog of articles I've been meaning to post, and some interesting updates on some long-term tests, awesome travel adventures (akin to the Cuba article) and some fun articles on topics our newer forums focus on. 2016 should be fun!

Hello, I've been using my Random House College Dictionary since the mid/late '70's and it's probably time to update my bookshelf. One I've been looking at, being in Canada is the Oxford Canadian Edition, wondering whether that would be sufficient as a general reference, should i supplement it with another or is there a better all around dictionary available.

alum burn with BBS?

While my DE shaving has improved dramatically (I am not getting irritation or bleeders anymore), I cannot seem to get close to BBS without some Alum Block minor burning.

My question is, can people get BBS with three passes and no alum block rub slight burning?

If so, I have a ways to go :)

DE/SE Razor FS: Gillette Techs, 1951, Bakelite handles, with extras

I have for sale two beautiful 1951 Gillette Techs.

#1: 3rd qtr 1951 in like-new condition. It really looks like it has not been used. The Bakelite handle has no dings and is nice and glossy. The head looks new. $16 plus $5.95 actual shipping via small flat rate box.

#2: 4th qtr 1951 in excellent condition. The head has no brassing or scratches, but the handle has one small ding at the bottom (see picture) and is not as glossy as #1. $14 plus $5.95 actual shipping via small flat rate box.

Each razor includes 3 sticks of Arko and 5 Crystal blades !

WTT Copper Lather Bowl for Fine bowl

I recently bought this copper lather bowl from OttomanBarber on Etsy and it is simply too light for me. It is in great condition, no dents or damage, and not a whole lot of patina yet. The seller told me that the body of the bowl is copper, the interior is lined with tin, and the handle is made of brass. The interior diameter measures at just under 5 inches. There's absolutely nothing wrong with it, however the weight and heft I'm looking for simply isn't there. Value link is here: http://ift.tt/1TmfpoI. What would you say the most sought after Wild find is that can be reasonably obtained? For instance, is a bottom dial Fatboy or Toggle TTO reasonable? Not sure how many of those were made but with the high asking prices of those, I would guess that does not qualify as reasonable. With my recent .99 cent find of the Fatboy, I was wondering if I have found the Holy Grail that I can reasonably expect to find or is there somthing else out there for the finding.

Went to local flea market today and picked up these blades for 6 bucks. The Gillette is bnib wrapped plastic and the one that has me stumped are the Vestpok blades ? Thought they were DE blades but they are something else, each blade is wedged into the wood holder. Sorry for the upside down picture.

Random discovery about cartridges

Like I posted here awhile ago, I bought a Cross Bailey. It came with 5 cartridges, and I really liked the pen. The only problem was that it skipped, and wouldn't start immediately. I ended up rinsing the pen, and being a little impatient, I put cartridge back in before the pen was totally dry. The added moisture helped the pen run well for awhile, until it dried up again. I refilled the cartridge, even though it wasn't totally empty, with some Parker Quink. It mixed and diluted the ink a little, and it's running much better now. Just an FYI for those who are having a similar problem. (But use this tip at your own risk)

Random discovery about cartridges

Couldn't restist buying this.

Since I'm a noob at straight razor shaving and still learning the essentials and practicing the art of shaving, I just couldn't resist buying this. I'm going to leave it in the box till I am ready for it. But I just.... am in love with it!! Had to buy it, couldn't resist, got all tingly inside..... it was love at first sight.

The story behind it is: When I started wet shaving with a straight, I went to a barber shop to get some soap and other essentials for straight shaving. (My girlfriend showed me straight razors in a store, which led to my dad donating his straight razor to me, that's how it started.) Anyway, at this barber shop there was a display case on his counter and this razor was among others in the box. This one immediately caught my eye because of the nice spine. So I asked the guy, can I open the box and look at that razor? When I took it out I saw it was a Thiers Issard, on which he said.. "Ah.. the Thiers Issard, well.. those don't come cheap". So my girlfriend asked him what he was asking for it. He checked some things and said: "Well.. this must have been here some time because I can't find it". To make a long story short, he gave my Girlfriend his email and told her to mail him about a price. They arranged a price for it and she took me to the shop again.
My girlfriend made a very good deal with the guy! (I didn't want her to pay for it, so I paid for it myself, that's how I know).
So I got this:

I'm so happy with it!!

But like I said, I'll keep it in the box most of the time (I will take it out to look at once in a while though) till I'm ready for this. I don't think it will be a good idea to shave myself with this razor yet. It has a kind of scary "I'll cut you if you don't know how to handle me" kind of look over it.
But! I'll have something to work towards now, first I need to be able to do clean shaves, with the razors I have now.
Once I can do that and strop properly, I might consider using this awesome razor.
I know.. it's weird, don't know why, but I'm just totally nuts about this razor.
Maybe I will never use it... keep it new and nice... I don't know.
The barber told me this is an "historic"? A collectors Item? I don't know enough about razors yet, but when I google this particular razor, I can't find much about it. What do you guys think?
I just bought it because I fell in love with it.......

Anyway, just had to share my happiness! (Cuddles his new razor.)
