Any of my fellow Brothers have any experience with the new (to the US) Samuel Gawith blends? P&C is advertising the new Cabbie's Mixture and Brown Sugar Flake. Both sound delicious. I am curious if any of our Danish/European members have any thoughts they would like to share.

I'm a big fan of the Gillette Aristocrat Junior - a wonderful balance of smoothness and efficiency.
Then, I hear all the noise about the Rockwell 6S, and I can't help but wonder. How does the Rockwell compare with your favorite Gillette(s)? I realize the question may seem a little general - but bear with me. I'm sure quite a few guys would want to know.
How do the razors compare? Or is there any difference?
I just had the best shave of my life. Not that i have decades of experience, but out of the 12 artisan/high end soaps i own, I just had the smoothest, slickest, closest, most enjoyable shave with the Dr. Jon's Hydra I just picked up today. The scent is nice and citrusy and the performance is ridiculous. I was surprised because its a tallow free, vegan soap. Its likely the shea butter, mango oil, and avocavo oil that made the shave so smooth and made the post shave so nice. I just started wet shaving 2 months ago, and didn't know shaving could feel so good!

Hello B&B community I've been lurking on this fine site for about a month and I usually don't join forums due to almost every question I can think of already having been answered numerous times. However if there's one thing I've learned from reading here is everyone's ideas/technique/prep/set up is a little different and YMMV appears in nearly every thread.
A little back story, I was given a Weishi TTO a year ago with a large supply of dorco st-301's. All I did for prep was shower and rub irish spring aloe on my face and go to town. It was a step up from my Mach 3 but I'd end up with nicks oozing all over my face... ouch. My Weishi threads galled and stripped so I tossed it then ended up here as I looked for a replacement that I've been using a month now.
I ended up with a Merkur 23c, escali/tweezerman, and col. conk soaps cheap and utilitarian, then went about improving my lathering and shaving techniques thanks to this forum (face mapping, no pressure, brush soaking and lather slickness).
Sorry for the novel but my question is I'm working through a decent stack of sample blades from TryaBlade and I'm doing a shave a day, two shaves per blade and tried several so far and I've noticed differences with WTG and XTG passes but seems like I'm barely removing hair with the WTG on "milder" blades but every blade so far is pretty rough ATG. Lots of blade skipping, tugging and occasionally some cuts. I have a noticeable amount of stubble left if I don't go ATG and the more days I wait the smoother the shave I've noticed.
I'm not looking to collect I just want a nice set up that works well for me, would you guys recommend a more aggressive or milder razor to try next if I don't find a blade that works for me in this sampler? Or an entirely different suggestion?

I finally received my freshly honed brand new Dovo Prima and a strop in the mail today. I could immediately tell the difference between what it was like from the factory and after a competent person with stones got through giving it the business. Hone wear... WAY more sharpness... Man... Here we go... I hammer a nail into the wall in my closet, bend it upwards, hang my strop on it, and get right to it... Practicing with my blade free Feather AC SS, that is. I find that my stroke doesn't appear to be all that bad as far as what I was seeing in my hands and what I was seeing on YouTube. I practice to a point where I find a comfortable rythm while maintaining good spine contact... My shoulder hurts... Let's go antagonize the new puppy first.
After that short break I break the razor from it's little spectacle case resembling tin and land it on the strop. After a quick pucker I give about 50 up and downs, all the while hoping and praying that I'm not screwing up my new edge... After I was done I gave a quick test on the arm hair and it seemed fine... Whew... Let's hope my face agrees...
A cool shower and a fine lathering of Jermyn Street later I'm standing there, razor in hand, ready to get after it. My first pass is a straight forward N to S pass. I'm treating this shave the same as I normally do with my AC or my Universal shavette. I can feel the blade pass over my skin VERY smoothly. Much smoother, in fact, than the savage Feather AC. This pass wasn't without mishap. I managed to nick myself right below my left eye. I managed to catch my skin just above the lather and I just ever so slightly opened the skin... The caveat? NO BLOOD. I did this exact same thing the very first time I ever used a shavette and I bled like a stuck pig and it left an inconspicuous scar. It seems the notion that a real straight is more forgiving than a shavette is very, very true. With the first pass out of the way, the shave is just a bit behind that of the AC and the Universal... Albeit, it was a MUCH more comfortable shave.
The next pass was the exact opposite of the first, straight up, S to N. This pass proved to be a bit more precarious than the first. My beard isn't very thick... But, I swear, the stubble is like little shards of piano wire. The razor was absolutely screaming. It sounded like Velcro being separated into a microphone at an Amon Amarth show. The marked difference is the feel between this blade and the AC was the weight. The AC is able to power through this stubble with much less effort. This Dovo required a lot of caution when maneuvering the chin and jawline. I managed to do it all without further incident. I will say that I was extremely cautious. When I finally got to my upper lip, the razor pretty much surrendered to the mustache. I did not go through with the fools pass as I normally do. I simply shaved outside in, relathered, and went inside out. DONE.
Ill say this, upon first inspection after rinsing and drying off, I wasn't overly impressed with the result. It seemed that the stubble had beaten the razor and I. I splashed on that awesome, awesome Jermyn Street aftershave and left it to dry. Man... Hopefully my wife isn't put off by the leftover roughness. I clean up my mess, dry up every millimeter of the razor, and run it across the strop a few times after the fact. I took one last look in the mirror and noticed that my face didn't look all that bad. There was a hint of redness in a few places due to using too much pressure, no doubt. That AC does require me to use a little bit of pressure in some places and I didn't really change much for this first shave as far as that goes. So no surprises here. It wasn't so much that it caused discomfort, so I'm considering this a win. What got me was the post shave feel. After my face calmed down a bit, I'll be damned if I didn't have a nice, DFS quality shave. HA. I was glad about that because I was already considering a legendary PIF, hehe.
In closing, as long as this edge doesn't deteriorate after a week or two of shaving, I'll be committed for the long haul. Cheers, gents!
The title of this thread is a bit of a give-away. I figured it belonged in Shave Clinic & Newbie Check-in, because - in spite of my having been quite the loud mouth since joining, only a short time ago - I am a newbie to B & B, and a grateful one at that.
I have been wet shaving on and off for twenty years, but really, more off than on. A profusion of designer stubble (the 90s), beards (00s) and general lazyness (passim) has gone hand in hand with poor health (including some large 'events' and major 'scares'), and a resigned attitude to my appearance. It has meant that that, until six months ago, I really didn't give shaving the attention it deserves. Our fathers (and/or grandfathers) wet shaved because they had to. We wet shave because we can, and we should.
In the last six months I've really started looking after myself again, taking more than passing pride. I'm not the beautiful boy I once was (who among us is?), but that means I should do more to help myself look and feel good, not less. Shaving has to be at the centre of male grooming: if only because it is the most physically engaging event our faces have to go through, and - in many ways - everything else must follow that: from fragrance, to dress choices, and a list of other things that , in the course of a lifetime, have become second nature.
I have been daily shaving for a couple of months now, aside from unavoidable inconveniences. I really can say that my skin has 'toughened' (which I expected) and become more 'responsive' (which I did not), but it doesn't seem quite enough. I want to try shaving twice a day, every day.
I am going to shave twice a day, every day.
With a fast growing and course beard, I know it can be done, the question is: How will it be done..? I have shaved twice daily before, but never more than once in a week (if that overall).
So, for the next 30 days, I'll leave hard & software updates, photos, and any thoughts that occur while I'm at the coal face (I am going to forego my normal practice of listening to music or talk radio while shaving). I'm presenting this as a challenge, but hey, if you love it, is it really a test?
If you want to keep an eye on my progress, please do. I'll be happy to have the company.

Hey everyone I'm new to this community
my question is about my new omega pro 49 boars bristle brush
is it made from the hair of a boar that is also known as a wild hog
if so why is the color a yellowish gold instead of black or whatever color
a boar actually is now if it's been bleached then why is the very strong odor
still there

Been a while since I've posted but still wetshaving.
Ran into a problem this morning with my 1970 black handled Gillette Super Adjustable.
I had a Feather blade in it for a few weeks, maybe a month was lazy and didn't change it out and was also shaving with a Tech sshaving that time.
I went to change the blade this morning and I cannot get it to twist open. Tried a rubber grippy pad from the kitchen, the kind you open jars with. No luck. Tried soaking it in the sink in hot water in case there was soap residue holding it shut. No luck. Tried boiling it on the stove in a pan of watch for the same reason, no luck. Maybe I'll freeze it to try to condense the metal.
I don't want to damage it but I did try putting in into my vice and used vice grips (protected by a pad on the handle) and I twisted the head loose but can't get the handle to budge.
Anyone ever experienced this or have a suggestion? Thinking of soaking with penetrating oil or WD-40. Scratched a tiny but of black paint trying the tools...easy fix but the razor WAS in perfect condition.
I've been using this razor for many years, never had it locked up on me like this. I'd expect if I let it sit for years, but I put that blade in no more than 3-4 weeks ago.

It has been my experience that, in almost every instance, a higher price has brought me higher quality. In other words, I find that capitalism and free enterprise actually work. Now I'm a retired music teacher, so I have not tested this theory to the outer reaches of it's limits. But where I have tested it I find few exceptions to the rule.
I started out with a $40 razor and went to a $120 Mergress and it was clearly better. Three times better? Absolutely not. I'm not implying that there is an equal return for your dollars as you climb the quality ladder. In fact, I would rather insist that there is never such a return. But the jump in quality was enough to keep me happy with my purchase. Now my favorite razors are an ATT Slant and a Wolfman: more expensive and clearly higher quality.
I started with cream for $7-11. I purchase Ultimate Comfort ($25 at the time) and it was clearly better. Again, not twice as good, but enough of an improvement to keep me happy. Then I purchased Castle Forbes for around $36 and experienced another jump in quality.
I've found the same with soap, having some fine shaves with $16-25 products, but not as good as ABC and MDC for $59.
My only exception has been Haslinger soap, which performs far above it's price point.
I've found the same thing in pens, shoes and cars.
What I am NOT saying: that you need to spend a lot of money to find a product that makes you happy and gives you a good result. Lots of shavers are very happy with inexpensive products and they are getting fine shaves.
What I have found is that the more expensive products are not advertised better, or any of the other excuses we less-financially endowed people like to say - a Ferrari really is a better car! (and I will never drive one)
I have one. The MRI came back and showed a complex tear on the inside of my knee that goes into 3 different parts of the meniscus. I have my orthopedic appointment set for 3 weeks from now, and judging from what I've read, I'm probably going to need arthroscopic surgery to deal with it. Depending on the edges, they can remove some or repair it (maybe a little of both, too) to treat the tear. Has anyone had the repair or partial removal done, and if so, what was your rehab like?
I have tried many razors over the years. Recently I settled on the Wolfman OC 1 as my standard ride. The only time I don't use the Wolfman is when I travel. I hope that nobody reading this note works for the airlines, but there is no way I am giving my precious Wolfman to the baggage people. Already too many misplaced/lost bags over the years.
I recently purchased a 1955 Gillette Red Tip for travel. Not expensive. Good Ebay purchase. I had tried it now and again but this last trip was the first time I had the opportunity to use it for 5 consecutive days. All I have to say is: What a Great Little Razor!
If I had to pick one adjective to describe the Red Tip, I would say SMOOTH. My beard is wiry and course, and my skin is dry and irritates easily. The Red Tip was very quiet on my face, so quiet that I thought nothing much was happening. In fact the Red Tip is quietly efficient. I didn't have a perfect shave after a first pass, but darn close. A second XTG pass cleaned things up perfectly. I had to alter my technique when compared to the Wolfman, taking shorter strokes and going over each area more than once, but since I never had any irritation from the Red Tip, the multiple strokes were not a problem. The head was a bit bulky making it difficult to get close around my nose, but that is about the only criticism I can come up with.
It is difficult to compare it to the Wolfman. Such different beasts. The Wolfman is more aggressive, and I can get far more done with a single Wolfman stroke than I can with the Red Tip. That said, the Red Tip is remarkably smooth and surprisingly efficient. Will the Red Tip send my Wolfman to the back of the medicine cabinet? NO, but I could easily live with the Red Tip as my primary razor. It is that good.

So, I started to see some stubble on my chin and decided to try my third wet shave. A friend's suggested I shave at night before bed, to which I agreed. It allows me a quiet environment, a relaxing state after my shower and no time constraints (rushing through the process) like the mornings.
I even added a twist by making a night of it by lighting up a Ghurka Master Blend cigar, prepared and ate dinner, watched "Person of Interest" and proceeded to shower. Luckily, my neighbor, whose a handyman reset my water heater for $20, so no more cold showers.
I dipped the razor into a mug of warm water as I showered, not the brush (it's a cheap synthetic one). I used a Personna blade (third use). After my shower, I lathered up with Tri-coastal White Birch and tobacco shaving butter. I had a better handle on how to apply this brushless farce of a cream, now after three shaves. I made three masterful, but measured passes: WTG, XTG, & ATG. I felt a little tug from the razor on the start of the last pass, so realized it was time for a new razor. But, I'm going to see if I can squeeze one more shave before retiring the blade.
I washed my face with warm water in the sink, then rinsed it with cold water under the shower spicket, and patted it dry. Not weepers, nicks or cuts. While not BBS, in three face shaves and two head shaves, the result is staggering compared to my old single blade BIC disposables, it was night and day. No irritation, rough patches, stray hairs, nothing. I also realized that in the summer my beard growth is less than the winter months, so the hair reduction aspect has been perfect for me. I finished off with a tea tree oil spray and then Kiss My Face Olive & Aloe lotion. It was sheer nirvana to have my face just be calm, and not recovering from the BICs butchering-it was what you'd desire before bed-peace.
So, while not perfect, I'd score it an 86. Still reading up on wet shaving, watching the videos and thinking through what steps to incorporate to make this work best for me, but dare I say it, I'm pleased after only three full shaves to look in the mirror and see my handiwork. I've dubbed this time for me as the "golden hour".

Gentlemen: I recently adapted an old liquor bottle cap with a cork for use in smoothing my blade out after shaving each day. I hold the bottle cap in my left hand, and pull the blade through the cork plug with my right hand. Ok gents,
as I put away the balm and heavy scents, i'm starting to look for some lighter products. I live in Baltimore, where swamp butt and shiny faces are the norm due to the high humidity. So balms just feel greasy all day, and some scents just get foul in the heat.
What are your favorite summer products?

I'll be traveling to Boise, Idaho for about a week at the end of June to race in the Spartan Sprint there and being that I used to live in ID I know that the water is very hard there. I checked the water quality in Boise and it's at the high end of hard water so I know I'm going to have issues with shaving soaps. Is anyone in a hard water area that can recommend a good soap for me to take while I'm there? I'll be staying in a hotel and I'm not found of cold water shaving so I'd prefer not to go with distilled water that I won't be able to heat.

2nd DE shave was better than yesterday... loaded more soap ==> better/ more lather (probably made at least past of the difference from yesterday.) Still some tugging with the Shark blades, but mostly in areas where it's tough to maintain a consistent angle of attack (i.e. chin/ jaw line, XTG on the upper lip, etc.) But it was better today, so I'm attributing it to skill improvement (shave techniques & lather building.) Still a ways to go to decide what the blade's limitations are. My plan is to stick with the Shark blades through a whole box (5 blades ==> 15 - 25 shaves?? maybe?) before changing to keep things as consistent as possible while I learn... but still allow for some change to evaluate various blades.
Overall, got a pretty darned good shave today. Even BBS in some places (at least, by my new-bie standard), but needed some clean up to get there in others & I didn't want to push my luck. Had a bit of neck irritation that was highlighted with the alum block, but it subsided quickly. Hoping tomorrow's better/smoother still (don't need BBS, just a CCS is still the goal with less tugging & good/smooth technique.)

What is your favorite shave setup?Simple, everyday shave is usually a Semogue brush with Merkur 23C razor. Soap is whatever I feel like at the time (I have about a dozen at this point). Thayers aftershave generally.

Astra SP gave me a bit of burn from the very beginning so I stopped using it in OCV2. Personna (ISR) was great and didn't gave me any burn, but I had to be very careful as I could cut myself quite easily. Now I'm using either Voskhod (no more than three times) or Personna (USA) (four times). Both of them are fine for me in OCV2.
Comparing with closed combs: I can get at least 4 or 5 with Voskhod and at least 5 or 6 with Personna (USA).
I was just talking to a Japanese seller from whom I have just acquired a kamisori and he recommends the Betatogi method for sharpening.
He has some good HHT vids on YouTube too!
It seems with this method you simply hone the Omote completely flat then flip the blade and knock off the burr on the Ura side.
There's no alternating between Omote and Ura, just work on the Omote first them finish on the Ura:
A bit of Internet research shows that this is a well established method of knife sharpening as opposed to Hamaguri method (where a secondary bevel is created on the Omote and then the bevels are blended together).
I'm excited to try this method out on my next kamisori.
Has anybody else got experience with or thoughts on the Betatogi method?
It's also interesting that he calls the Japanese style of blade "Kataha" although I'm not sure if this refers to the grind or the sharpening process.
Our Daughter and family came up for the weekend. I had gotten my Son in Law started wet shaving a year ago but he has not deveoped any AD's yet. He is just a one razor one brush guy. Anyway I had to leave on a run yesterday and told him he could try any of the razors or different stuff in the den. We got to talking about a Red Tip that I had tried selling with no luck. He mentioned maybe trying something a bit more aggressive so I gave him a little back ground on the Red Tip and told him it was his if he liked it. He has been just using a Maggards razor ( not sure wich one, Brad Maggard helped him with the purchase).
Well tonight when I called home to check in I got informed that I'm less one "56 Red Tip. He shaved with it this morning before they all headed home and told my wife that he really liked the way it shaves. Oh yea, he is a head shaver to.
All thing being equal , I acquired a SE this weekend and Pif'd a DE. so the den is still good.
