My name's Ian and I'm just south of Barrie in Ontario Canada.
Just recently learned about DE while exploring options/alternatives to buying another pack of Mach 3 cartridges. Found a 'deal' on a Dorco Prime for $15 shipped a few days ago but got impatient today's and went to Men Essentials in Toronto to pick an EJ DE89A11BL (Barley Handle) along with a variety of blades to try. First attempt shows potential but definitely need to get a brush as my cream was way too dry :P
Glad I found this forum. Have been researching and learning on here for nearly a week and the information and passion of this community is incredible. Very glad to be here and I'll definitely ask questions as they arise :)

I just got my 30s long comb NEW bar handle in the mail today....and wow this razor blew me away! It's easily my favorite razor I own now. I didn't think they could get much better than the Slim/SS/Tech/Krona/34c razors...this thing is effective and mows down any growth standing in it's path. I didn't even feel the blade against my skin like I could in other OC razors I've tried(Fatip Piccolo). This razor is a perfect medium between mild and aggressive. A+ all day for this little guy. I used a Shark Super Chrome in it just to be safe. That combo works great. When it's time to change that blade out, I'll put in a trusty GSB as those are my main blade.
One thing I noticed while shaving tonight, was that I could feel a weird vibration in the handle as soon as I hit stubble with the razor. Kept making me think the head was coming loose. Is that normal for this kind of razor?

Since it is New Year's Eve, I thought I would ask what is your sparkler of choice for celebratory occasions? Is it an honest to goodness Champagne or a sparkler from California, Italy, Spain, elsewhere?
I'll start. For Champagne I like Pol Roger and Moet & Chandon. From California Chandon is a really good budget sparkler but I really like Schramsberg.

Hey Gents,
Just treated myself to a new Marlin 336 in 35 Remington. The fellow at the gun store was recommending I take a look at DNZ mounts. I've always been a Leupold base and ring sort of fellow, so I thought I would ask about this product here. Have any of you gents had experience or know of someone with experience with this sort of mount?

Here is the stand I made to hold my razors, shave brushes, and aftershave. It will hold 8 brushes and 60 razors which can be easily modified to hols more razors and or brushes if need be. It is attached to a rotating base for easy access and I have room at the base for the repurposed Tobasco sauce bottles that I use for my aftershave. I currently have 13 aftershaves. It may look top heavy, but the base weighs 25 pounds to keep it from tipping. I love being able to see everything. When you can't expand due to limited counter space, build up.

Wifee gave this to me for Xmas. It is Mango Vanilla. Scent is quite nice and performance is quite good.
However, I don't think its meant for a brush as I have to put about double the amount compared to proraso to get a decent lather. Very, very slick.
Anybody tried this stuff?

Just sold my house last month and after paying off my bills and putting money aside for a rainy day and all that other responsible things, I decided to indulge and get a Stark razor (doing responsible things is hard work). It arrived today, just in time for my new year's shave. Having a preference for symmetrical grind kamisoris, Jerry did a great translation of my request. Can't wait for tomorrow.

I've had an AoS pure badger since 2007, which is looking pretty ratty nowadays, and I thought I'd give my WSP White Mountain Silvertip badger some rest by getting a Best badger to round things out. It's the perfect size for my hand, and feels soft enough...can't wait to try it! Of course it came in the mail right after I had just shaved off 3 days' growth.
Slight tangent here....is it Simpson, or Simpsons? It says Simpson on the brush, but the red box it came in clearly says "SIMPSONS"
Any tips on breaking this in, or does it even need breaking in? Surprisingly there's no scent I detect (the WSP brush reeked of badger) and I remember my AoS pure badger having an orange peel scent on the brush.

What else should the members of B&B know about you?I have been using a mug and brush with a cartridge razor for several decades. My first brush was a Vulfix, and it is the only brush I have ever used; I used it this morning, and it is still going strong after more than two decades. About a year ago, I decided to try a safety razor, so I headed out to the local antique store to see what I could find. I bought a razor and found out afterwards it was a Gillette fat handled tech. Now, I am looking to branch out and try more razors and soaps. And who knows. Maybe I will try something besides my trusty Vulfix.

I posted a while back about finding some awesome decanters at antique stores. I was cautioned against this as leaded crystal decanters will leach lead into the spirits. But pure unleaded glass ones should be ok to use. So how do I tell?
Lead test kits for tap water are expensive and require sending off to a lab for results, and are single use. I have 6-8 decanters I need to test.
I've read about a "thump" test, where you flick the top of the glass and depending on the sound you can tell based on the sound, but it's not terribly accurate, except when you get a definite ring, you know it has lead in it. It just doesn't work well for low leaded glass and distinguishing from non-leaded.
Any other ideas out there?

This is my first review so bear with me:
So let us begin with the packaging; Glycerine soap inside of a tiny mason jar, I love this package as its both reusable and caters to my country upbringing. At the bottom of the soap is a little dapper mustache that is dyed in (would show but used mine so much that it wore off).

Scent: Monte Carlo upon first sniff smells like Frank Sinatra just left his room to head down to the casino floor. Seriously this stuff smells great, starts off with a cologne ish musk, finishes with floral and citrus notes. Pretty strong fragrance, it lasts several hours post shave and is not for the olfactory sensitive groups out there. My only complaint is that there is something in the fragrance that can irratate my skin (inconsistently).
Quality: Small batch soap made with attention to detail. This soap is top notch for what it is. It falls somewhere between a cream and soap. Lather: Soft soap that requires some work to lather properly. I had to work the soap over for about 40-50 seconds before I began to get a suitable lather. This may just be inexperience on my end, it may be the soap. Further playing around is required on my end. Efficacy: This soap is slick, very very slick. While the lather was there it was amazing however; the lather has a tendency to dry out faster than any of my other soaps. But see above notes for possible reasons. Moisturizing: Never had a dry day with this soap. Always left my face super smooth and soft. Overall it's a great soap. I love the fact it's a small batch operation located in El Paso, TX. Just got back from the flea market in Leesburg, FL and came home with the following -
First is a nice English Leather AS and cologne box set for only $2 .
The second is a giant bottle of English Leather cologne. And, it too was only $2 .
As much as I love Knize Ten, it is so expensive I don't anticipate having to buy anymore for a very long time now that I have a SERIOUS supply of vintage English Leather!

Horrible. I could stop right there but I will expand a bit.
This is a clever idea, a totally disposable fixed blade open razor. Unfortunately the blade is absolutely the worst edge I have put to face since buying my first factory edged Dovo in the good old bad old pre internet days. I was afraid this thing would be very "cutty" due to the miniscule handle and ultralight weight, but the opposite was actually the case. Handling the razor was challenging but do-able. The blade was simply too dull to cut. Sweeney Todd, meet thrift store steak knife. Serious. Two strokes and I was done with that. Grabbed a shavette and finished the shave. The price is nice. $14 for 6, I think I paid. They are probably about 50¢/ea in Thailand, the presumed market since the paper sleeve is printed in Thai. I think Kai makes them.
If these had a good blade, they would be pretty cool. As is, they are indeed best described a horrible.
I would like to see these made with a quality blade. As in, one that can actually shave.

Proaso makes a few after shave balms ,no alcohol . They seem to correspond to their color shave creams
they have a red,a white and a green balm, and a blue.
Question is ,is there any difference between them?

Last shave of the year! I decided to pull out my Gillette Sensor and put it to the test. Same prep, CC Bay Rum Soap. Let me say that I was amazed at how good of a shave I got. Seriously, this is right up there with the best shaves I get with my DE! Smooth neck, irritation free, BBS on cheeks, this is an awesome shave. Had I gotten shaves like this before I never would have switched. Then again, if I never switched, I'd never be capable of getting a shave like this with the Sensor....what a conundrum... Anyhow, it seems prep and technique are key to a good shave, you can make up for a lack of a quality razor with good technique. I'm glad I tried this, I realized just how much I've learned so far. I never thought my face could be so smooth from my old Sensor!

My WD boar is the smaller of the two at 24/65, but it's a large brush for me. The knot seems more densely packed than either Semogue or Omega boars, and thus has considerably more backbone than either, despite the length, and less splay in use. I like those attributes, others may not.

I woke up early today, and decided to do a little internet perusing before going to work. As usual, I found myself on B&B ... and I saw the header of 'Member Map' .... I remembered that I tagged my location when I joined and I thought, I wonder where the members are? I put my info there, but never really looked to see who else did.
So I cruise on over there and hover on a tag ..... last activity of that member was 4:05AM today .... then I hovered over another, and another ..... Then I got serious, and checked every tagged memeber from left to right on the screen, zooming in where there were clusters.
Would you believe that I am here at 5:08AM on the east coast of the USA and every single member who tagged their location on the member map had been on the site withing 2 hours of when I was looking ...

I'm in the military and have been battling lower leg injuries in both of my legs for the better part of 2 years now. The doc says they're not shin splints due to the location of the pain. I'm nearly flat footed and I under pronate when I run (odd combo). I have had luck nearly the past 8 years in a motion control shoe, but I can't get past the injury even with several new pairs of shoes. I've been on profiles for no running and been seeing a physical therapist and the pain just keeps coming back. I want to try out a pair of Five Fingers, but I don't want to spend a ton then not like them at all and be stuck. The KSO EVO is a cross trainer, can any Five Finger runner out there tell me if this is a good starter toe running shoe?

The shaving mistakes I find myself repeatedly making even though I know better:
1. Trying to get to much out of a first pass. It's called the FIRST pass for a reason darn it, there are at least one or two more passes coming.
2. Getting a nice, close, irritation free shave and then going "you know, I bet I could get this a little closer and be BBS (cue the irritation and razor burn.)
So...what shaving mistakes do YOU make repeatedly even though you know better?

I would love to add an almond soap or cream into my rotation but want one that has some really exceptional ingredients. I enjoy tallow soaps but also enjoy the qualities of my current favorites like Mikes with Shea butter, and Kokum butter , lanolin, and Vitamin E. Are there any almond choices that meet this criteria? First of all, I thank you gents' very helpful advices in my previous thread.
I think I will purchase a open comb vintage Gillette.
After reviewing some posts in this forum,
there are many models to choose: Aristocrat (so many number), old, new, new improved, senator, and sheraton (I think sheraton is a gold-plated senator, right?).
I like efficient razors, maybe it tends to be more aggressive.
My budget is under $100.
I know razors preferences are YMMV,
but hearing some advices in B&B is a must before I pull the trigger.

Restoring my first vintage brush. Was rather surprised it was hollow based. I have it all sanded and ready to put a knot it but not sure the best way. Should I fill the base? I left a ledge about 12mm down I could set a knot onto. I could feasibly epoxy a nickel down to the ledge and the set the knot on the nickel. What do you all do with them?

Ok boys here's the scoop. I have literally spent the entire day probably a good 12 hours trying to hone up a couple razors. Everytime I go to start with the bevel it wouldn't get sharp enough to shave hair on my 1k. So after hours of trying it I decided just for kicks to try it on my DMT. Poof bevel was set. So I go to move to my 1k after the dmt 600 and guess what no more sharp. Lap the stone is perfectly flat same thing over and over. What could I be doing wrong or could there be something else I'm not thinking of with the stone. It has been a while since I've honed maybe this is why I've been having trouble with my other stones but I should easily be able to set a bevel. Arg! So frustrated!

WELCOME TO THE MIXED BLADE SHAVING JOURNAL OF CBLindsay
As 2015 comes to a close I look forward to a new year with fresh goals and aspirations. 2015 was the year I committed myself (and my bank account) to the world of traditional shaving. What honestly started as a conversation about trying out some CO. Bigelow soap blossomed, ...no exploded into a collection of soaps, brushes, razors, aftershaves, oils and other hardware. My collection is comprised of dozens of new and used artisan soaps in all sorts of scents as well as some great vintage stuff, I have double edge and Single edge safety razors made as early as the 1920's to current production, a couple of vintage Sextoblades and a couple of vintage straight razors. Honestly, the quality and history behind the older/vintage items has been one of the most exciting things for me to experience this year.
With the help of a few new friends found here on B&B, I have been able to gain a great amount of skill in the art of traditional shaving using DE and SE razors. I also blame these "friends" for exposing me to the wonderful world of vintage razor, soaps and aftershaves. It is because of their influence I have traveled as far down the rabbit hole as I have.
Another area I have found great enjoyment has been in the making (and giving) of shaving soaps. In part due to this forum and the resources within, I was inspired to begin making shaving soap. I made some soaps with various "classic" scents just to see if it could be done. I can see the world of soap making being one that can consume someone like me, IF I had the ability to reproduce my successes and improve upon my failures. Needless to say, soap making is a fun little hobby that will not likely go any further.
Now on to the GOALS and ASPIRATIONS for 2016.
THIS journal is one of my goals set for 2016. I intend to make use of this journal thread to document my journey in what I am going to call "Mixed Blade Mastery". Having attained a fair amount of skill at using my regular DE and SE razors, I intend to try to master the STRAIGHT razor.
Since mastering the straight razor is about more than putting blade to skin, it is about maintaining the razor itself, so my journey may hit a few snags along the way. To aid in my journey, I have acquired 2 Sextoblade razors that do not require particular care in maintaining a sharp edge. I have also acquired a couple of straight razors, sold as shave ready (indicating they have been honed up to 12k stone and finished on linen etc), a strop and various other gear. I will detail my journey more completely following New Years.
I do hope a few of you will follow along at some point ...I have a bit of an ego and do like attention, so tell your friends and neighbors to follow along as well. Feel free to comment, cheer me, give advice or what ever.

Does anyone use a daily moisturiser cream, particularly on days you don't shave but also as part of their post-shave routine or other products (e.g. balms or other aftershave products) that do the same thing?
I'm trying to decide whether it's worth it or just use whatever post shave balm or cream that's part of your routine. Currently I'm using the Proraso white Pre-shave cream both pre and post shave, but also on the nights I don't shave I've been using it after washing my face with a cleanser just to keep everything hydrated.
While the Proraso does a good job and feels nice and cool, I feel like I'm wasting it when using it on non-shave days.
Thoughts? Suggestions?

My really cheap Timex HRM stopped working. I'm looking for a replacement. Most of the new ones are wrist monitors. Are they as accurate as the chest straps? I'm used to and don't mind a chest strap. Also, I don't care if I can download a lot of data to my phone, about GPS, or about Bluetooth compatibility--if I'm running outside, I don't want to have to carry my phone with me.
So, to cut to the chase, are the monitors without a chest strap accurate? Are there any inexpensive ones that are still accurate? I'd like to spend less than $100.

Had my first shave today with a Schick Twin Blade. Popped it into a Schick adjustable razor. Wanted to give it a tough test. Set the Adjustable to 7, and decided on a one pass shave ATG everywhere except the upper lip where I planned on one pass WTG + XTG ear to nose upper lip touchup.
I had high expectations from reading user reports, but this combo blew me away!
The razor felt much milder than the adjustable usually does, and ultra smooth. Cut very close only requiring minimum buff at corners of my lips and the upper neck under the angle of the jaw. I could live with this combo daily, very happily.
Are there no currently manufactured twin blades? If not, I can see me on a hunt for a good stock of these blades.
How many shaves per blade is possible with these Twin Blades? I frequently get 18+ shaves from most of my DE blades, am I off base thinking I could get month+ with one of these substantial pieces of metal?

Results vary. Might not apply to all.
Today I shaved with all three, aforementioned razors. If I had to I could live with any of the 3, but the Schick injector was the overall winner.
I went through as good a prep as I know how to do. Shower, Olay soap, double face wash, AoS unsented, shaving oil. All the razors had fresh blades. They all gave a presentably close shave. The Schick was most comfortable, easier to maneuver, and required the lightest touch for the closest shave. I used a chick, blade, and made a nice lather from cake soap, and Penhaligon's cream. The Schick, razor I used was one with a chrome head and the long, black, ribbed, handle. It was a genuine Schick, and not a clone.

To answer your question, wet shaving is when you make your own lather with soap or cream and water. I don't call shaving in a shower with an electric or using foam from a can "wet shaving" - but that's just me. You are right: you can wet shave and still use a cartridge. That's why I don't use the term wet shaving. I call what I do traditional shaving. To me traditional shaving is wet shaving and using a DE, SE, injector, or straight razor.
You can do multi-passes with a Mach 3. However, every time you make a pass with a four or five bladed razor it's as if you are doing four or five passes. No doubt irritation, ingrown hairs, etc. may well result.

Nice shavette! I've read that the F SS is supposed to be one of the better ones, I started out with a 10 dollar shavette which in hindsight was a bad idea.
I switched over to a straight after a month and have done as many as two shaves so far! It takes a bit of getting used to the difference, which of course I haven't managed totally yet, but I am happy I bought a straight! :)

My last post was on 2013, I have accumulated so many soaps, blades etc. that i went into a 2 year moratorium of acquisitions.

First off thanks for all the information i've already found here. I've been lurking quite a bit and this site has been very helpful. I figured i'd share my tale of woe..
Over the holidays i was given a shiny new 'Shave Ready' Gold Dollar razor. I never really considered SR shaving until that actual moment and the person who gave it to me thought i would have more fun sharpening it than shaving with it. Please note i have a large, well groomed beard. I shave just my neck and my head.
Well something piqued my interests. I did some research and a little test run with the razor and it went ok. I've read every GD (gold dollar, not god damn) thread on the internet and decided to hold off on shaving with the GD again until i have the necessary supplies to perform the shave correctly and a razor with a better 'shave-ready' reputation to compare it to.
Here's my plan and the damage i've done so far;
I ordered a TM strop, an Omega 636 brush and some Taconic Shave soap (it's local). Now I promise i wont put my razor ANYWHERE NEAR that beautiful strop until i've perfected the technique on a cheaper one, like 6 months from now. I think the one i ordered comes with a practice strop, but if not i will just grab a $30 dollar deal off Amazon. Im waiting to see.
I'm planning on getting some stones. I'm considering a Norton 4000/8000 waterstone. I own two DMT Duosharp bench stones and i've always been looking for an excuse to add a few stones above the 1200 mesh.
My plan is to use the GD as a practice razor for honing. In the meantime i'm going to be looking for a nice shave ready vintage razor that i can practice shaving with and maintaining the blade. Any advice in that arena would be appreciated. Whipped Dog seems like a good option.
There it is. Feel free to chat me up. God knows my girlfriend is sick of hearing everything there is to know about straight razors so it will be helpful to have some people to talk to about it.

While on a recent trip to South Florida, I *of course* had to check out local colognes and aftershaves.
I was rewarded with a great story and some neat products.
"Crusellas" is a local fragrance company. Once the most popular soap maker in Cuba, the company was "nationalized" - meaning stolen by Castro's goons - and the family fled to Miami. The story is here: (note: not putting links to any products for sale. Crusellas doesn't sell to the public, just distributors).
There were a pretty cool company, actually giving away houses as part of their advertising promotions. Anyways.
Crusellas makes lots of aftershave/cologne products; I'll briefly review three I bought.
(Left-right) Agua de Ruda is one of several market toward the .... hmmm. Santeria or "spiritual" market. Let me leave it at that. Agua de Ruda has melon and peppermint tones that are a nice change of pace in aftershave/weak colognes. It's meant as a "jinx breaker" but that's only if you are a, ah, religious novitiate. Anyways, it's got enough alcohol in it to be a nice aftershave and got it on sale for $2 and change.
Second one, Agua Floral, is simply a takeoff on the popular Florida Water. It smells exactly the same, though it doesn't have the bluish color (see below. Actual Florida water is in the large center olive oil pourer).
However, the Crusellas version is half the price of Florida Water. Done deal!
Third one is a patchouli cologne "with root". There is indeed a sprig of some root in the bottle ... it's a weak patchouli scent; kinda smoky, fades over a few hours. Also nice for a change of pace.
OK. I used the word "crazy," that's subjective. Maybe "way out of the ordinary" would be better. Because I also found this one ...
Now come on. Who WOULDN'T want a cologne called "Destroy Everything?"
I have GOT to know what that one smells like ...

I have looking to buy a Feather Artist Club, probably the SS. I have noticed that the price varies from around $81AUD to $230AUD for what appears to be exactly the same razor. The price I saw on another one on Ebay was about $500. Is there some difference in these razors or is there just a huge difference in the markup? Is the folding version essentially the same as the non folding?
If there is a primer somewhere on the www I am yet to see it.

I'm not sure exactly how this works, I have a decent idea but am fuzzy on specifics. I have this razor and it came unhoned as a practice blade. I am currently getting it honed and would like to see if there are some folks interested in giving it a run.
I know there are some mixed reviews about the vendor but so far I'm happy with my GD that came shave ready. But seeing as I've only been using straights for 15 days I'm not nearly qualified to review this blade properly.

This morning I used my new Big Ben blade that came in a blade sample and I have to say, I was disappointed. This is my 4th blade that I used so far since I'm new to safety razors but still. While it was smooth with no irritation, the shave was not close at all and the blade was not as sharp as other blades I used.
Have you used Big Ben super stainless before, what was your experience?

Anyone want to recommend me a blade?
I'm currently working my way through a 12 different blade "sample pack" I got here (in the UK). I'm now on blade number 4 (of 12) and the differences so far have been dramatic, to say the least.
I fully intend to use every one before I commit to buying even a whole pack of 5 (or 10). In fact, if I can curb my impatience to settle on "the blade" for me... I'll probably move on to a different sample pack when I've finished this one.
Why settle for something that may not even suit you? Also, this way makes it a bit of a game and more fun IMO.

I find some products work differently with my Fusion Flexball Proglide than with my DE razors. Neutragena Cream works fine with my Cart, not so much with my DE razors. OTOH Nivea Sensitive and Cella work great with both carts and DE razors. What are your best, worst, usual lathers for cart shaving.

Looking for an activity to get me and the kids outside and enjoying the great outdoors, we decided to get the kids Slingshots for Christmas.
We picked up a couple Trumark FS-1, extra bands, based on some online research and reviews, as well as some marbles. We had a blast and are looking forward to our next outing. We also ordered some metal shot (2 sizes) from Cabelas but are still waiting for it to arrive. No animal shooting, just targets and boxes etc. I may pick up one of those metal targets for .22s that self reset when you hit the last one.
Does anyone have any inside tips or tricks to get a few rookie slingshot users hitting their targets consistently? Brands to look for or ammo to use?

So this was my great grandfathers, other than that I really don't know anything about it. Is it a very small pipe? A cigar holder? Not sure if it's ivory or meerschaum. Quick question for you M15 owners out there.
I just bought a Shapton M15 1k to upgrade my bevel setter. The price is great and I went with the M15 over the Pro because everything I read online stated it was longer wearing between lappings and felt a bit better.
I also read it needs to be soaked but is that really the case? The Japanese instructions that came with it only said "do not soak for a long time." I gave it a test splash and let it sit, and it looked to me like the stone soaked up *none* of the water I put on the surface.
Is it actually splash and go or does it need a soak?
It looks lapped to me too. Straightedge test was flat. I'm going to lap it anyway but I was impressed.

So almost a month ago to the day the GF bought me a full EJ setup... brush, razor, mug & soap etc.
Over the month I have added to this with an alum block, some rose water witch hazel and of course some Pinaud Clubman off the recommendation and threads read around here... great suggestion btw.
So, having lost the beard just before Christmas, I have managed to get in my first few full face shaves and it's no lie, shaving is actually much more enjoyable and fun.
I am generally pretty happy with the experience and how I am coming along, though am still struggling to master the neck which I struggle with for several reasons. 1) I cannot decide which direction the growth at the very base of my neck grows in meaning I struggle to get a clean shave in this area and 2) my entire neck area is just too sensitive to get several passes in before it starts to burn up.
I am currently using an EJ89 handle with feather blades which I have run with with very little exploration to date of other blades (even though I have several) which might be an issue. However I am finding my post shave ritual of Alum, witch hazel & Clubman really working to counter my much improved though still very amateur technique.
All in all it is coming along well and I am glad to have persevered through the initial bloody messes that were my first experiences.
Would appreciate any feedback as to how I might overcome the neck issue and if others have had similar issues and how they have over come them. It might pay to leave my next shave until the current razor burn has completely dissipated and try something new.

I live in San Diego and I have been looking for a store or shop that tailors more towards soaps in the hopes of being able to buy my shave soaps from a shop rather than having to shop online. What is your favorite shave setup?Currently a beginners set up, Van der Hagen Safety Razor, Astra Superior Platinum, Henry Cavendish Himalayan Shave soap and Proraso Red, Escali Pure Badger hair brush and an Omega Pro 48 on the way.
What are your hobbies and favorite activities?I play guitar for my church, I also play ukulele and a little banjo. I am a big movie and T.V. show buff. I also sing every now and then, when I can and in the shower.
What else should the members of B&B know about you?I am still very new to the whole world of real shaving. Before this I had been shaving with a Gillette Fusion and Gillette shave gel. I only made the switch in July of 2015, so any tips, tricks, and all around advice is highly accepted.

Hi my name is Rafael, I am new to B&B as well as shaving with soap, brush, and safety razor. I have been doing so since this July 2015 and I've been loving it because I get a way better shave and it is more cost effective to do so. I am still learning how to shave with the safety razor, knicking myself here and there, but recently the blood has lessened, since I think I'm getting a better hang of it. I have been using the Escali Pure Badger hair brush I bought off of Amazon and a cheap little boar hair brush that came with a soap dish I also purchased on Amazon. Both of these brushes have been pretty great, the Escali more than the boar hair. Last week I decided to treat myself a little and order the Omega Pro 48 boar hair brush, reading all sorts of good reviews, for only 12 bucks. I also ordered some of the Proraso Red soap from Jet.com at $8.09 for a pack of 2, which to me seemed like an amazing deal considering I've read all sorts of good things on Proraso. So my question is, since my brush is due to arrive today, what are your thoughts on these two products? Thanks a ton for any thoughts .

First thanks to everybody here. If I had not stopped here I would be back with a cartridge I found out how to make lather on this forum. To me if you cannot make lather nothing else will work. It is funny but this is the only place I found that really talks about it. How many quit because they did not know, from my experience it could be as high as 50% or even more. Two plus months of cuts lots of blood and half as close under the chin. My Osma Alum would send me up a wall. Why I didn't quit I do not know, I should have. All the time trying the right blades and soap went out the window because they could not have worked right. I researched and I do have the good equipment. Anyway what saved me was using a separate lather bowl and running fingers down the brush now and then as it worked upwards. I did know how to load the brush but that is not enought. For me a seperate bowl. No more nicks and blood, none. Closer than ever in my life. I can fill up a cool whip bowl now if I wanted. I am too wore out to try new soap and blades for a while. Soap was easy by watching my brush while rinsing and drying. Blades for me is as sharp as I can get, no problems. As I said I stay where I am except for a double comb razor. Anyway for a while and me this what works for me. Strop Shoppe Baker Street soap with a dash of D.R. Shaving Cream no post or pre shave. Gillette 7'oclock dark blades with Kia on order. A Parker brush, I know it is not a Simson but I like it. Edwin Jagger Kevin Razor. Tried a butterfly, never again and as I said a double comb on order with the Kia's. Long here I know but if it can help another newbie stick around it should be worth it. For my thanks to everybody I am a proud $25 donator.

Forgive me but I've tried doing research but most threads are talking about cleaning used razors or restored razors.
How do you clean your daily razor? Just hot water after a shave? My razor started turning white due to the cream even though I rinse with hot water after a shave. So I'm wondering how you just keep those razors sparkling.

So in reading up on aging, I found the following from G.L. Pease:
"Q: What's the best way to store tobacco for aging?A: Ideally, tobacco should be left in its original sealed tin, and stored in a cool, dry place. It's important to realize that storage in plastic bags and the like, while allowing the tobacco to "meld," will prevent the true aging process. Plastic bags are permeable to small molecules. (Water, while not a very large molecule, is polarized, and has a hard time penetrating the barrier formed by the plastic.) If you can smell the contents through the bag, you're losing flavor and aroma! Mason jars, bail-top jars and so on are good candidates for long term storage, as long as you can resist the urge to open them to "check up" on what's happening. Aging tobacco must be left alone, with no gas exchange allowed. Once an aged tin is open, the contents should either be smoked relatively quickly, or transferred to a jar with a good seal."
The part that I don't quite understand is the italicized/underlined portion, especially as it applies to tins. Every tin I've purchased, even though it is tightly sealed, I can smell the tobacco at the seam of the lid and the tin body. Does this mean that the seal is bad, is it normal, or is it just ghosting from the tin sitting in a tobacco shop for who knows how long?

This is my Christmas present to me, and my first ever Open Comb razor.
My first shave with the Piccolo was on Christmas Eve morning (24th, I just couldn't wait for Christmas!), and it was great (DFS).
My second shave was on the 26th morning and that was even better (DFS).
My third shave was this morning (29th) and it was better still (BBS).
I simply can't believe how wonderful this little razor is (for me of course, YMMV).
MORE DETAIL FOR ANYONE WHO'S INTERESTED:
I came back to DE Shaving (after a several decade gap) on October 29 this year with a Timor 1320 TTO, shortly followed by a Gillette Super-109 Adjustable. I did fancy trying an open comb but all the current ones (that I liked the look of) were three piece.
The water where I live is so hard you could stand a spoon up in the basin. Due to this I was continually loosening the TTO mechanisms to (frequently) rinse the razors/blades during a shave. I guessed that loosening a three piece all the time to rinse would be a real pain in the a$$.
Anyway, I still wanted an OC and I really liked the look of the Piccolo... even though it was a three piece and my natural preference was for a thicker handle. So, considering the price, I just went ahead and purchased one.
As soon as I opened the box and took it out of its package I had to smile. I just love the look of it. (The finish certainly isn't engineering perfection; but how many things that you truly love are perfect?)
Having done lots of research on the Piccolo (mainly here at B&B) I inserted a once used Personna Red and started with a little trepidation. It was definitely wise to show it respect, especially for a first shave... but I needn't have worried. The whole experience just flowed naturally.
1. I didn't even notice the handle (which tells me that its diameter, surface, and weight must be perfect [for me]).
2. The razor angle varied everywhere, but it was all intuitive and worked perfectly (for me).
3. Due to the specific OC design of the Piccolo, every rinse left the razor and blade perfectly clean. (I was amazed at the "only slightly dull" look of the razor and blade, post shave, in comparison to my TTOs which get completely gunked up with the exceptionally hard water.)
After today's shave I can't stop touching my (incredibly smooth) face. So, not only am I in love with my Piccolo, I'm in love with me too. And, as the song goes, "Things Can Only Get Better."
FYI, I tend to be a minimalist. My normal shave is pre shower/bath and comprises:
1. Apply hot, wet, face cloth (about a minute).
2. Face lather.
3. Shave WTG, ATG, then Buff where/if required.
4. Splash on AS (after shower/bath).
I'm now definitely set on the hardware/software in the picture above (unless I change my mind of course ).
I'm currently trialling blades. I'm certainly impressed by the Personna Red which has given me all three wonderful shaves with my Piccolo, and one prior to that. It doesn't feel like it's going to need replacing any time soon. I have quite a heavy growth and would need to shave AM and PM to be really smart, but I quite like the contrast of going from heavy stubble to BBS.

I'm in need of a new suit. My cheaper college/interview suits are ready to be retired. I'd like something a step up from those, but don't really feel warranted to spend a bunch of money on a suit I'll wear a few times a year. I don't ever have to wear suits for work, or even traveling for work. Weddings are pretty much it, maybe a random event here and there.
Does anyone have experience buying suits from ebay? What brands should I look for? Brands to avoid? I'm a skinny 29 year old, so I'm looking for more of a slimmer fitting suit, not an old man fat walrus Wall Street suit.
My wife is an excellent seamstress, so I can get her to measure me pretty accurately. From what I've been reading, its hard to go wrong if you find a seller who will take returns. Then if its not fitting right in the shoulders, or other hard to tailor areas, return it and look for another. I've read its important to get the shoulders and length of the jacket to fit perfectly. The sleeve length and fit around the torso can be adjusted by a good tailor.

Brand new Irving Barber shavette. Polished chrome and very well made. Has some weight unlike most shavettes and a comfortable handle. It has an ingenious loading design to hold either half a DE or a SE blade. Holds the blades very tight and is easy to open and close.
