New Member new to Wet Shaving

Hello to everyone. I just started wet shaving less than two months ago and B&B was the first place I found. I live in SW Ohio and I don't know if this is common elsewhere but I'm finding tons of SE and DE razors at scrap metal prices.
But I also found a 3 piece chrome Apollo with a chrome case in great condition at a fair to really good price. I understand that it is rather hard to date this razor but if anyone can point me in the right direction it would be a big help.
I then found a...

Gem ptfe vs favorite de blade

This may be comparing apples and oranges but how do these blades stack up to each other on your face?

hi. my name is eric, and I'm an addict.

hello all,

they say acknowledging the problem is the first step. I've known deep inside for a while now.

i hope that by coming to these meetings i can change my acquisition disorder into a contemplative honing practice.

i don't know how many steps that is, but feel free to hit me up for coffee and we can discuss the program.

also, if you know of a good book...

Just got a bunch of Saphir shoe polish and cream in the mail today.

Got it from meschaussettesrouges.com and they threw in a nice draw string bag (bonus) and a hand written note thanking me. This is the best price for this product that I've seen. Shipping from France to Canada was less than two weeks.

New member, new to wet shaving, finding TONS of vintage SE & DE razors

Hello to everyone. I just started wet shaving in May of this year and B&B was the first place I found and now I'm a member because I have been finding a ton of vintage razors in S.W. Ohio and I need some help with what to pay and what to buy. Most razors I'm finding are selling for around $5.00. I have 7 Gillette SS (late 40s to 70s) and 5 Gem SE (30s to 50s) that I paid $5 or less for. And I have 2 Gillette Adjustables ($15 and $30) and 1 Gillette Tech ($4). 1 Eversharp Schick, gold/brass...

Lather.com almond shave creme

I picked up a tub of Lather.com's almond shave creme (that is how they spell it) today on a whim. I was curious if any of you had any tips for using this cream. I tend to face lather but I also have a scuttle for bowl lathering. I am currently working with a Parker SRX for the first pass and a Rockwell 6s for a second pass. Thanks!

FS: Blackland Sabre SE

I would like to pass along my just received Blackland Sabre Single Edge razor. It has been shaved with once, and will be sterilized before shipping. Not a thing wrong, but I realized it is just too mild for my use.

Retail was $185, I'd ask the same and I pick up Paypal fees & postage in the conus. $185 via Paypal, and will ship in factory case, and include an extra dozen SE blades on top of those originally supplied with the razor.

I will be listing this elsewhere, first to make...

Bevel Shaving System at Target

I know there have been varying opinions on this particular razor and accessories, but I wanted to share that I saw all of the products, both individually and as a set, on the shelf at Target. Prices looked to be less than the online original price. If you have been interested in this system at all, it might be worth a visit.

A rookies first shave with an open comb.

I found this Gillette New long comb at an antique store today. It cleaned up really nice. Just had my first shave with it and am pretty impressed. It was the first time I have been able to active a 3 pass BBS shave without having to do any touchups afterward.

Mmmmmm...bacon.

I have not met a person yet who doesn't love bacon. I personally think it is one of nature's perfect foods. I like regular bacon, pepper bacon, back bacon, Canadian back bacon (round) and the more the better. It is perfect for any meal...

Anyone else like bacon?

Another flea market find!

So I managed to make it to 3 flea markets today in between stops at the fireworks stores.

Mostly the usual stuff, crusty GEM 1912s, empty avon bottles and ratty-beyond-saving brushes. Though I did find a Valet auto strop and a Rolls razor kit that was pretty nice for a good price. I left them be though as I'm not really interested in them. Was mostly looking for an Old Spice mug and straight razors but I batted 0 in those categories.

My last stop, the same market I bought my first GEM...

Vintage Shaving Soap...as an investment?

I confess, I check Ebay every day to see all of the new Old Spice listings. I'm always looking to get unused bottles, vintage pottery bottles (also still looking for a pottery Grand Turk mug, have the Friendship one), and, most importantly, the shaving soaps. When I first joined B&B and got in to this hobby, Old Spice soaps were going for about $20. Now they're going for $30-40. Box sets of the aftershave and cologne are going for $40+. Even vintage Williams isn't as cheap as it used to...

New USB microscope

Well I've been honing for a bit. I'm still not as consistent as I'd like. I don't have a test I'm happy with.
So I got a USB microscope. I'm happy with my shaves on these two razors. One I honed with a coti finish. The other is a factory hone from PRC. The PRC is an awesome shaver. The W&B is like a butter knife but shaves well. Nice close shaves with little irritation.

I know a coticule doesn't leave a polish like a synthetic so... Do these look about right? Thoughts?...

I have around 25 -30 straights and I use them in a generally regular rotation so I find an annual turn on the 12K finishing stone is sufficient to keep my edges in good shape. Noob question

Hi guys, new to straight blade shaving. My question is, if I shave 4-5 times a week, is using a SB doable or will it "hack" my face up? Does the face need to recover/rest after a shave? Is this a question that just depends on the "type" of face/skin one has? Any input would be helpful, thanks!

In my experience, the upside down baseplate models are extremely dear to their owners. At a certain site, they are often listed for 4 times more than what you might expect to pay for their baseplate right brothers on the BST. And double even their baseplate right siblings on the auction site. This pricing structure is part of the allure. Let's face it. Finding reviews is impossible. soaps and creams "revalation"

I was just going through my usual vendor's soaps and creams offerings. They have almost 8 pages of 48 products. That's almost 384 products.

-384 times 40 equals 15,360 shaves

Great shave with TOBS Lavender today

I have been wet shaving just over 6 weeks. My first cream/soap was TOBS sandalwood. I got bit by the SAD and in a little over a month I have about 20 soaps and a few creams in the mix. Today I thought I would try the TOBS lavender I have. Wow! Lathered up so quick and easy with my Maggards 24mm synthetic. Plenty of glide and slickness. More than enough lather for 3 passes. I used a Timeless razor with 0.68 OC and Astra blade. Thayers with Lavender and Agua Lavanda Puig to finish up....

I used this soap this morning and it had now residual slickness. Maybe it's drying out, but I don't remember this soap behaving like this when I first used it. Had anyone else experienced this? For me, if a soap doesn't have ant residual slickness, than what's the purpose of using it?

Gem Micromatic Clog Pruf a Bit Deceptive?

I get the most amazing shave with my MMCP razor. However, it feels a bit deceptive. Immediately after the shave is finished, things feel clean shaven. But it's only after my face calms down a bit do I feel the smoothness of the shave. Remarkable!

My routine:
A three pass shave WTG, XTG, ATG.
Rinse with warm water.
Rinse with cold water.
Rub an alum bar across the face using cold water.
Wait 30 seconds, rinse in cold water once more.
Pat dry.

Now at this point, my face doesn't feel...

I have hesitated on buying samples due to the small amount in each sample. Don't think there's gonna be a problem. A little seemed to go a long way. Lather was great.it lasted on my face. Could someone who has EITHER the R41 or the R89 twist confirm the number etched inside the head of the razor, please? It should be either (4) or (5).

R41 Twist Open comb...is it (4) or (5)?

R89 Twist Closed comb...is it (4) or (5)?

Cheers,

BB

MWF: How many 3 pass shaves in a puck?

I know, YMMV, and this is sort of like inquiring about a woodchuck chucking wood. However, I ordered three pucks today, at a very good price, and now I am wondering how long before I will need to buy soap again. How many shaves in a puck? Best guess?

Help ID a Pitiful Gillette

So, this fairly pitiful razor followed me home from a local antique store. The handle is trash. Was cut, maybe to be a travel razor, and it's split all the way up. The head looks salvageable. Slightly bent corner tooth. And yes, it still had a blade in it! I know it's either an Old, or a New Improved, but not knowledgeable enough to distinguish between them yet. So just what is this stray mutt dog I felt compelled to rescue? I mean, come on! I couldn't just leave it there to suffer!...

Honing or Stropping which one matters more?

As I was honing up a couple of razors I did a little experiment. After honing I tried a HHT without stropping then with. Each time the HHT was stronger after stropping.

As a matter of fact, when I couldn't get HHT on the entire blade I went back to the strop and paid special attention to make sure the blade was contacting the strop throughout the strokes and sure enough the areas that could not achieve HHT could now.

Additionally, I tried palm stropping and the results were even more...

What's your favorite Amouage?

As the title says. What's your favorite and why? I've had a chance to sample quite a few and I've narrowed it down to 3 I'd like decants of and 2 that are full bottle worthy.

Still, fragrances are very personal and I enjoy reading others thoughts on them.

Subjective question- GEM

Just curious , what is your best GEM razor? I was looking at the 1912 , simply because I always had a curiosity about them but I wasn't sure if those are a great starting point, or if anyone else had a better vintage SE razor they can suggest? I know the Shick Injector's are also popular , but I am looking at shave quality here more than anything else.

Gillette Rocket HD 500 vs. Gillette Monobloc (French version of the HD 500)

What are the differences between: Gillette (normal / standard / regular / brass) English Rocket HD 500 vs. Gillette Monobloc (French version of the HD 500)? With the Monobloc, two different versions of the razor were available, one with no lines on the knob, and one with two lines on the knob.

I have heard that the French Monobloc version is more aggressive than the regular English version of the HD 500 -- is that correct. Also, I have noticed in all of the pictures that I have seen of...

castle forbes lime

I just tried castle forbes lime for the first time. It is a great cream. The smell was awesome and the slickness was great. A little goes a long way. I was using proraso white cream and I like this a lot better. To me this was slicker and provided a better shave. It also smells way better. I wasn't a big fan of how the proraso smelled. This also didn't leave the white residue on my razor like proraso. I finished up my shave with CC lime after shave. It was also my first time using...

Gillette Wilki...really?

Got a few Shanghai Gillette Wilkinson Swords in a while back. I've tried a few blades already with my best results coming from Big Ben and Astras.

But the Wilkis, for the price I wasnt expecting much. Instead....I was blown away! Using a blade in my Gillette NEW Type, I got the smoothest shave I've just about ever had. Three passes and done. Used the same blade a few times since with great results.

How is it in your State?

Tennessee is a wonderful place live..one of the best ever. But....
Sometimes the stuff that comes out of Nashville is, well..curious at best.
Most recently Tennessee passed new legislation that really makes little sense at all to the people it affects; most noticeably, police (mostly retired police) and sportsmen. Won't get into the wildlife stuff right now.

TN is a pretty firearms-friendly State. Even so, the passage of a bill that reduced the cost of a lifetime CCW permit to only $100 for...

4th of July, America's Birthday. For this week's theme, America the Beautiful, let's keep the Fourth of July celebration going by showing off your beautiful American pipes.

You say you don't have any American pipes that are beautiful? Well, there's a proud American tradition of finding beauty in well used items that just get the job done--an old pick-up truck with 250,000+ miles and still pulling strong, a cowboy's worn saddle, a simple pair of well-made boots. I have a bunch of vintage and modern razors and my rotation changes frequently. Currently my favorites are a Wolfman .74 and Rockwell 6. I recently went for a go with a Fatip that I picked up and a persona blade. I had an Ikon shavecraft X3 but got rid of it after a couple weeks, I found it a little mild most likely due to the blade exposure.

I want to try another slant and was looking at the Ikon B1 slant, I especially like it due to its B1 coating, for those that own one how does it shave in terms of efficiency, aggressiveness compared to the X3 or the Merkur 37c?

First shave with a Gillette Guard today

I ordered a few things from West Coast Shaving last week and added a couple of Gillette Guard razors to try them out. I figured they might be a nice option for carry on luggage and/or traveling.

I have to say, the handle struck me as quite nice! It's a nice molded three dimensional shape and has some good ribbing and knurling so you won't lose grip on it. The razor is feather light as you might expect. The shave was just fine, very easy, very smooth. It took a little work to get under...

Usually I buy Old Spice from Wallyworld. Unfortunately, the nearest one ran out, and I bought one from Dollar General. This is the same brand of Old Spice, in the same red box and plastic bottle, but a smaller amount.

OneBlade Core updated Version Shipping Tomorrow!

I just posted to the first impression thread, however, for those of us who find the Core simply too mild, they've made a change in the last production run to improve the razor a bit or make it more aggressive. They've tweaked the blade exposure and angle, which will keep the blade toward the front of the razor, as well as provide a tiny increase in blade gap. They feel this will more closely match the experience with the Genesis model. - Apparently quite a few Genesis owners who ordered...

Sir Hare = Awesome

I wanted to give some love to Sir Hare Classic Barber shaving soap. I've been trying a few different soaps and creams lately and Sir Hare turned out to be fantastic. New to DE shaving, cannot get a close shave

Hi all Gentlemen,

I was looking for a review of the Gillette Guard and stumbled across this forum. The amount of information to the finer aspects of shaving this forum provides is just incredible.

I did start with a DE razor but I do not remember what razor or blades I used back then.

Pal adjustable question

Bought one of these on a whim off the bay and was just curious aboit the dial. Razor is spotless, and the adjustment works, but I can't remember how tight that dial gets on full lock to the left L side. I do remember the last I had being loosy goosy when the razor is on H full way. I think it is a combo of a low mileage razor/fresh spring and the horrible leverage that knob provides but my frame of reference is foggy.

Pal adjustable question

Can anyone explain this discrepancy?

I came across an odd pricing difference for a Semogue OC boar brush between 2 websites, however, they were by the same vendor. Smallflower sells the SOC on their website for $45 + shipping, but sell the exact same brush through Amazon for $25 with free shipping. Why such a big price difference? Is the mark-up on their website ridiculous or is Amazon forcing them the lower the price by almost half?

The rules are simple: you need only to predict accurately the winning league. CONUS only. I will draw a winner from among all those who predict the winner.

BONUS: Do you want to double your chances of winning? Then predict the score, as well as the winner.

ANOTHER BONUS: Do you want another opportunity to double...

Matador de luxe, a swedish vintage razor

I just picked this up from a local gentleman:

I payed about 7,50€, very worth it for the leather case alone I think. I don't have high hopes for the razor itself, but I'm looking forward to try it out. Also som old gilette thin blades came with it.

PRECISIONSRAKHYVEL of course means "precision razor". The swedish word "rakhyvel" hard translates to shave plane (plane as in the tool), as we use the same word for plane as we do for razor (hyvel).

Just wanted to share this :)

Dug out my Black Hawk again today...

I decided to give my Black Hawk razor another try today. I found the sweet spot angle and had a very good shave. But, I am still having trouble getting used to the blade width, so I suspect it will only get occasional use. I still dream of a Black Hawk that uses Injector blades!!!

What are people's favorite after-market handles to put on RazoRock's aluminum Baby Smooth razor? After dinging up the original handle on mine, I was startled to learn that the model is being discontinued (link below). Are there any best practices for future-proofing generally? Thanks!

Grandpa's Brush Is this unique

Hey guys my uncle passed away last month and I went to meet my cousin at the house to tell her what they should do to get it ready to sell(I'm a Realtor). While going through the house I said hey if you find any shaving items let me know. Later that day she found a brush her dad had that had been his father's(my grandfather) it looks similar to ones I see on here but the metal band throws me off. Any ideas? Here it's is before and after a cleanup. Would love to get a new knot in this and...

AutoStrop/Valet Razors: A Typology in 13 Parts

The various types of Valet/AutoStrop razors confuse people, and with good reason. There are 10 basic types of razors in this family, leaving aside minor variations in handles, country of production, finishes, and kits. It’s a lot, and the variations can be subtle.

These razors were produced for only about 40 years, from 1906 to 1946. But they were revolutionary in this regard: They gave us Henry Gaisman, inventor of the Probak razor, whose patents forced Gillette into a merger with...

Blade disposal - not a good way to do it

After I washed my hands in the men's room this morning, as I went to throw out my paper towel something familiar caught my eye. It looked like a wrapper from a Feather blade. It was. It also had a Feather blade in it! As the waste can (with garbage bag liner) is at waist level I didn't think it was good that there was a razor blade sitting in there amongst the waste towels. Especially as when the towels start overflowing people will push them down. And when the cleaning guy comes...

My first trip down the honing path...

I have half-a-dozen razors that need to be freshened. They served me well but its time for more than chromium oxide stropping.

Decided to start off with two excellent, but inexpensive shavers... a Genco Henrys XXX and a HMC Bossing. (both 5/8s) The bevels had been set by an expert. So, I followed Slash McCoy's directions and used 3 micron film followed by two sets on 1 micron film. Did the second set on 1 micron film with paper underneath the film. Finished them off with aluminum oxide on a...

A nice floppy brush for less than 50$ ?

Hi all,
I love my PLisson L'occitane synthetic. It's a very floppy and very soft brush but I'd like to try some new brushes. The maggard and razorock plissoft have too much backbone for me.
It needs to be floppy (like the Plisson or almost), and soft if possible.
I am eventually interested in the vie-long 04312 cachurro horse hair or in the omega 0599.

Do you have any advices guys ?

High Quality Chinese Razors

Are there other quality Chinese razors (at a nice price) like the Ming Shi 2000s?

Is it possible to compile a list?
  • What are they?
  • How much do they cost?

  • How do people feel about them, or rate them?
I'm personally curious if there's nicely made Chinese three piece open comb or slant out there.

The smell of the polish is a scent that is very comforting. I have been using Kiwi shoe polish since I was a kid. It is part of my Sunday evening ritual. Clean with cloth, remove laces, dab polish and apply, buff. And buff some more. Replace laces. Admire outcome.

I've got a fair mix of good and middling, common and unusual drinks in my home bar but I'd like to know your essential stock list to drive a change.

If you were to advise someone when they were starting out what would you recommend? I'm thinking budget easy drinks. Any tips on spirits, wines, mixers and additives would be great!

Parker silvertip

Okay been using cheap synthetic for years and just purchased a Parker silvertip. Immediately realized what a great brush this thing is. Perfect for face lathering.... but having trouble building lather in a bowl or scuttle. Face lathering seems to be the best way to use this brush which is okay. Afraid to be rough with the brush for fear of damaging the knot. Any suggestions on building lather in a bowl other than adding water or loading the brush with more product

A month now with a pair of 1912s

Hi all.

A month ago I moved to a new apartment. Packing was haphazard and without too much time in my hands I put all my shaving gear in one large box: a couple of dozen of SE, DE, brushes etc.
Whatever was on the previous counter got into the travel bag:
Two Ever Ready 1912s, a Vie Long horse hair brush and a tin of Mike's.

Since the move I looked into the box once: to grab an Omega boar brush and a tube of Ingram's (nothing beats Ingram in the hot Israeli summer).

That's it.

I have a...

Travalong Razor...Ever used one?

I just received a 1944 Travalong Razor from an online auction site, I have been looking for one for a while and jumped on a razor that was in my budget and that looked in good condition.

The razor I found came complete with the original box, travel pouch, and instructions (printed on tissue paper possibly?)

When I opened the box I discovered the razor was really small and compact, literally the size of a razor blade and a little thicker than the box of razors. Very easy to set up...3...

I was on vacation this past weekend in Coarsegold CA, along highway 41 between Fresno and Yosemite. My daughter and I went antique shopping Sunday afternoon, and I was intent on finding me a razor. Hi All

My favorite shave cream is without doubt, Xpec Unscented. I LOVE ADP and SMN - performance wise, however the presence of menthol is not good for me, as I am extremely sensitive to it. So I tried Xpec, and the performance is just as spectacular as the other two. Therefore for me Xpec is the best cream Ive tried or owned.

What's something that you purchased when you first got into de/straight shaving (when you were super excited, but confused about what was needed, so you just bought everything) that you would never buy again now that you are more seasoned?

For me it's the Proraso pre-shaves. I bought two tubs when I first started and hardly used them. I realized that preshave was not necessary for me. Now I'm forcing myself to use them because they've been sitting around for so long.

Brush Recommendation

Hi all,

I started DE shaving about 8 years ago and have been using the same brush since. I'm not sure of the make/size, but it's whatever came in the Lee's Razors beginner set back then. Either way, I'm ready for something new.

I only shave my neck/cheeks and I face (or in my case neck) lather with hard soap. From what I've been reading I probably want a smaller knot (22 or less) and a shorter loft (under 50). Seem reasonable?

More specifically, any recommendations on a specific brush? My...

Oldest blades you've ever shaved with?

I was wondering about how much the edge of a DE bade deteriorates in storage, and if this is even a valid concern - provided you're not storing your blades in the outdoor tool shed, under a damp rag or something silly.

So, purely out of interest:
  • What was the oldest blade you've used, or are currently using?
  • How was it stored?
  • Did you notice any deterioration due to storage?
