This is a hand carved brush and razor handle. The brush handle is old growth Douglas-fir and padauk. The razor handle is old growth Douglas-fir and purpleheart. The Douglas-fir was sawn and arranged such that the growth rings are vertical and radiate from the center, thus creating stripes around the entire circumference of the handles.
I chose to leave the finish a little rustic looking given that I used Douglas-fir. To contribute to the rustic theme, the finish is basically in the wood (I did not grain fill either). The topcoat does contribute a light film coat. The finish is: tung -> phenolic -> homebrew varnish. The neoclassical part comes from the shape.
The knot is a RazoRock Blondie Boar transplant. I changed the loft and knot hole diameter to sizes that I prefer for this knot. I did not like the original size, 26x64. I tinkered with some test handles (chunks of 2x4's), and found that 28x57 was ideal for me. It picks up soap, lathers, and releases lather better than the original size (I face lather exclusively). The bristles are fine and densely packed. As it breaks in a bit more, this knot looks like it might become a favorite. My thanks to the gentlemen at RazoRock!
(edit: 1 washing and 5 lathers, and the knot is already soft.)
Knot hole: 28mm
Loft: 57mm
Handle: 63mm
