Just curious, as it seems like there could be some overlap with traditional shaving and steel players.
I picked up a used lap steel 6 months ago, put it in C6 tuning with some new strings, and off I went!! In July I bought a pedal steel on eBay and actually found it to be easier than lap steel. Yesterday, I accompanied a singer-songwriter friend and played steel guitar the whole gig, and the audience seemed to LOVE it! I come from a strong classical / flamenco background and am pretty obsessed with music theory so the transition to steel was easy in some ways. Now I’ve definitely been bitten by the bug and plan to keep playing and looking for gigs. I’m going to push myself to keep learning lap over pedal as I love that old timey Hawaiian or western swing sound. Maybe I’ll even find an old straight, grind it down and use the spine as a slide, just for show! :-)
What do you play? What’s your favorite tuning?
Any lap or pedal steel players here on B&B?
