So, I've been in Vegas on business for the last 5 days and I stayed in the Palazzo. One of my colleagues/friend asked me what fragrance I was wearing on the trade show floor, and of course I told him it was Frederic Malle's Dries Van Noten. He complimented me on it and he asked a few questions about fragrance and what to look for in one before buying, etc. He explained that his girlfriend wanted him to start wearing more fragrance and wanted me to give him some recommendations.
We had an impromptu dinner last night with colleagues and I was ready to leave early to go to Barney's in the Palazzo to get my nose on some lines that I don't yet own, etc. Before I left I asked him if he'd like to go with me and I'd give him a few ideas and the "fragrance 101" so that he can choose something for himself. Of course he agreed and we set off for Barney's.
I have to admit it was fun, he asked a ton of questions and I had the fragrance manager Michelle spray a TON of juice on cards for him over the course of 2 hrs. She was a real champ and even made a few samples for him to take home. I first took him to Byredo, Frederic Malle, Le Labo, Chanel, L'Artisan and let him try some of my favorites. I explained notes and fragrance progression, longevity and sillage, etc. It was such fun to watch him begin his journey because as he smelled each juice he'd talk about what type occasion he'd wear it for and what color the fragrance made him think of. He wanted to buy several and I explained that he can get them cheaper online, but he wanted to spend some money with Michelle since she was such a pro. I steered him to Chanel BdC EdP and also some Mademoiselle for his girlfriend.
I picked up some Byredo Mohave Ghost and Oud Immortelle this morning on my way out of town. Michelle was there and she said that enjoyed watching my buddy sample and learn about fragrance. She also said that it was nice to help someone that knew so much about fragrance. I thanked her and told her that I am learning new things everyday from people online that know far more than myself....of course I'm referring to you all and the bunch at Basenotes. I actually gave her the sites and told her to stop by and check out the "online" side of fragrance, lol.
I fear that I've sunk the fragrance AD hook into my friend, pretty deeply lolol. This morning when I saw him, we talked briefly before my meeting and he smelled great ;-). My work is done here!
Have any of you been able to help someone like this? Honestly, I've never had too many people interested in finding out more info about fragrances. Most are happy to just find something that "smells good" and go with that and aren't bothered with breaking down the notes and enjoying the progression of fragrances. Wanted to share this experience and find out if anyone else had something similar happen?
