For the most part, great success (I'll spare you the Borat gif). Only a couple nicks (on my jawline, which I've always had trouble with no matter what), and for all intents and purposes a close and smooth shave.
I had problems with the lather. Even after reading the lathering tutorials here I still couldn't get a lather going that seemed thick enough. I'm assuming this is just a matter of trial and error, but I'll ask for some opinions.
I bought the Van Der (dutchwhatever) kit with the brush and soap. Do you generally just use the soap in a mug and build lather from that, or include a bowl? I see both in the lather tutorial, so I'm curious what you folks use.
As for the shave, I'm certain reading and watching made it much easier. I had no problem finding the correct angle for the razor...seemed kinda natural really. But my neck (from the jawline down) isn't too smooth. My hair grows sideways there, so I'm going to have to figure out the best way to deal with it. It's presentable, but not smooth. It needs to be shaved from left-right (WTG) and that's a motion I'm not comfortable with.
But, overall well done. No irritation and I won't need an infusion of blood.
