The dial numbers change the aggressiveness of the razor by increasing the blade gap. Set on 1, the gap is extremely small and the razor will shave very mildly. I recommend starting on 3,which is still on the mild side. Mine is set to 4, which seems to work well for me. When you change the number, open the razor first, change the setting, then close it again. You have a great razor that should last a very long time.
