Pucks ?

I'm kind of new to the DE shaving but have been at it about a year now and love it......Been using Cella, Poraso, and Stirling soft soaps, but want to try a couple of pucks.......Two questions about pucks.......Is it OK to keep them exposed in an open cup/mug or do they meed to in a sealed container? Second, I know they come in somewhat different sizes, do you just whittle them down to fit if they are to large?
