Problem razors.

There was a recent post by someone new to honing about his razor not getting sharp. Once pictures were posted it was obvious that too much pressure was used and too much metal was being removed (among other issues).

I recently got a vintage straight from Ebay that I've had some problem with getting sharp. I have a lot of straights and I have gotten most of them very sharp. I don't have a lot of experience with "problem" razors however.

The razor that I recently got from Ebay had some of the issues that the recent new honer pictures showed. The spine was flatter on the sides than I would think that it should be (too much pressure on the spine) and the bevel was too wide, especially on one side.

There was also metal removed from the stabilizer area. I didn't notice these things on the Ebay pictures as the blade was darker and they weren't obvious in the pictures. I've since cleaned it up and now they are obvious.

Honing it with my "regular" techniques has made it fairly sharp but it's not as sharp as my others and it's a rougher shave as well.

This is no problem in that I just set it aside and I continue to work with it from time to time, do a shave test and work with it some more. I consider it a bit of a learning project.

I'm just wondering if there are any little tricks to the trade that you more experienced honers out there have for common "trouble" razors?

When there is too much spine wear you can prevent more damage by honing with tape. Is this also a way to improve the geometry that may have changed due to the excessive spine wear? Maybe I should try some tape to see if the edge improves?

If someone was honing on the stabilizer I'm guessing about all you can do about that is to just not do it yourself. :)

I don't think there is anything else I can do about that one. If the bevel is wider than normal or wider on one side than the other is there anything I can do or that need to do regarding that?

I'm just trying to learn some tricks that you use when you come upon those vintage straights that may have some damage from possibly years of improper honing. This particular one doesn't have any "smile" or "frown" issues.

There's not necessarily a lot wrong in this picture. I'm just posting it since I'm sure someone will request one shortly. :)
