Simpson's Shaving Cream: Review

Simpsons shaving cream review

A big thanks to @Dcaddo111 for buying this cream for me after I won the Race to the Finish!!

Of the British products contending for our dollars (pounds?), I don’t see Simpson’s getting much love.

While products such as T&H, TOBS, DR Harris, etc., are mentioned frequently, I had never even heard of Simpson’s shaving cream. Sure, they make outstanding brushes, this is the first I knew that they made a cream. This may be because I am normally a soap guy, and while the few creams I have tried work well enough, they just don’t see as much use as my soaps.

The two British creams I have tried are TOBS Aloe Vera and T&H 1805. I have had a similar experience with both.

They provided good glide and cushion, but at the end when I washed my face off, my skin felt decidedly tight. This
has discouraged me from using them regularly.

With the Simpson’s cream this morning the performance was even better than the TOBS/T&H. Lathering was a breeze, and there was so much lather the excess flew off the brush while I was brushing it onto my face. I did an aggressive setup – iKon Tech/Astra – and I actually found that with a bit of care, the razor was rather forgiving. I could touch up previously shaved places and found that there was sufficient glide. The entire time, my skin felt very protected.

Despite the Tech’s fearsome reputation, I found this shave to be rather quick, easy, and painless.

Normally, with high-quality creams/soaps, I lather once more once I am done shaving to help my skin, and rinse off in the shower. I do this not because it’s more time efficient, but rather because of tidiness (I don’t like getting water all over the sink that I will then have to mop up). Today, however, the lather was extravagant. It took a good 30 seconds to wash everything off in the shower, much longer than normal. Cleaning up the sink took awhile too, because I had to wash off the gobs of lather.

My skin felt very supple afterwards.

My only quibbles were the scent and the shelf life. It was much milder than I expected. Closer to Haslinger’s than any of the other British shave creams which are much stronger in scent. Not a deal breaker! It supposedly expires a year from opening. I think most of us would be hard pressed to finish a product in under a year.

I'll continue to review over the next few weeks, posting new thoughts.
