This summer will mark one year that I've been using the Wolfman OC razor with large handle. Previous to this, I used the Merkur 39c slant as my daily driver, and the 37c at work.
I wanted to give a brief review of my findings since acquiring the Wolfman. Basically this thing is a work of art. James really puts in a lot of time and care into these razors, and it shows. The quality of material is top notch (steel) and overall it feels great in the hand. I opted for the larger handle because I prefer a heavier razor. In my experience this razor is excellent, and will quickly let your face know if you have the proper angle. The head design offers precision and rewards you with a smooth area under your nose. (You know that hard to reach place?) Blade placement is never a problem and I never have to fiddle with the blade to see if it's seated properly.
If there was one thing I didn't like, I'd have to pick on the blade gap or lack there of. For me, my facial hair can become almost a full beard in a few days. So, on my days off, if I'm skipping the shaves, this is where the OC could use some work. The shave cream/soap and whiskers easily block the area between the comb and the blade since they are so tightly placed together. After each pass (using both sides) I have to unscrew the head slightly so that the cap and blade release from each other and allow water to pass between them, unclogging the razor head. A major pain if you're in a rush. You'll quickly notice how your pass doesn't remove any whiskers. But... If you shave daily, and your growth is minimal, you'll have zero issue.
For me, this really shows that having the right tool for the job is necessary. On my "growth" days, I'll be reaching for the slant since I have never had an issue mowing down a weekends worth of whiskers and having to unclog the head. A quick rinse and I'm back at it. During work days I'm required to shave daily, and the Wolfman really shines here. It's comfortable, works well with almost any blade I've used, and the post shave results are always superb.
If and when James makes a slant, and if the blade gap issue is addressed, I think I may be looking at the perfect razor for me. I can only hope the head will work with the handle. Until then, I'll keep tackling the shaves as needed.
Thanks for reading,
Brad.
Almost a year with the Wolfman OC.
