I am just getting back into straights after about a three year hiatus. I had never truly mastered the straight shave to begin with, but got acceptable shaves on occasion, but mostly shaved with DE's and SE's. We moved back into our old home which had been used as a rental for a few years and subsequently needed some renovations inside. I packed away my straights and swore to leave them that way until my upstairs bathroom had been renovated. Well the renovation of the bathroom where I do most of my shaving has been essentially completed and I'm getting back into the swing of things. My first post renovation shave was with a vintage spike, I believe it to be an Ontario Cutlery, the markings are very faint. I made a single pass and finished up with my Slim. Second attempt, I used the same spike and got a bit too aggressive and cut myself with the spike end. After letting things heal for a couple of days I used a Boker Edelweiss that I had purchased new a few years back and managed to do a fair two pass shave without need for a DE touch up. I really need to go back and hone all of my straights, with the exception of possibly my new-ish Boker. I tried touching up a previously shave worthy Wade & Butcher on CrOx and then FeOx on balsa, but it needed much more than that and would not shave well. So back to the "learning to shave with a straight" odyssey, at least I kinda know what I'm doing wrong when I do it and how to correct those mistakes, but I still have more to learn.
Starting Over Again.
