Any hints/tips for capturing birds in flight

Hi everybody,

I am starting play around a bit with wildlife photography, and in particular am really enjoying bird photography.

Does anyone have any hints or tips on capturing birds in flight?

Current set up is a Nikon D3100 with a Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 DG Macro Telephoto Lens.

Am currently using an aperture around f5.6 and shooting in aperture priority mode. Continuous AF mode seems to produce the best results with AF area mode set to 3D.
