Last weekend, I received my first REAL fountain pen (I had a couple of nameless fps that came in gift sets, and played with them before making the dive). I chose the Lamy AL Star because it and the Safari were so well reviewed here and elsewhere. I've written at least a few lines with it nightly, so I figured I'd write a brief review here. Okay...this isn't a "review" in the academic sense...more of a gushing pronouncement of love.

The first thing that caught my eye was the packaging. Minimalist in the best way possible. It's a simple, yet artistic paper box, with the pen suspended within on an insert of the same stiff paper. Aside from the cardboard ring that prevents the pen from fully closing on itself (puncturing the included blue ink cartridge) the only other packaging is the warrantee card. Again, beautifully minimalist, yet sturdy enough to use as a "case" for the pen when I'm not using it.
The pen itself is amazing in its construction and overall craftsmanship. The weight is pretty much perfect for me, and the triangular grip is very comfortable in my hand. It's simply a pleasure to hold. It writes smoother than any other instrument that I've ever used. I love this pen
I'm using Pilot Namiki ink (standard black) and the Lamy Z26 converter. I'm still "practicing" on a cheap composition notebook, so I get a little bit of feathering. I'm not yet comfortable enough to mark in the beautiful leather-bound journal that I purchased with the pen.
I'm still learning a lot of the technical aspects usually discussed here in The Nib, so I know that this isn't much of a "review". Would love to hear any questions or points of discussion from the old hands here to help my learn!
