After mainly using an Ever Ready Jewel SE & a Feather AS-D2 in recent weeks, I got out my ATT Kronos H2 for the first time in a while, to provide a bit of variety. I did my WTG pass & the shave was nowhere near as smooth as I remembered it being & certainly nowhere near as smooth as my Ever Ready, or Feather. In fact, it felt slightly uncomfortable.
The best advice I have picked up from this site is that if something isn’t working, don’t just plough on regardless - make a change. So I swapped the base plate for an R1 & did my XTG & ATG passes. The R1 was nice & smooth during the shave, but the shave was not as close as I achieve with the same 3 passes with my Feather, or with two passes using my Ever Ready (WTG / ATG).
My only other ATT hardware is an Atlas S2, with the original end cap (i.e. the blade is not parallel to the edge of the cap). I have never got on with the S2, as even with a Feather blade, the shave was always a fairly tuggy affair & I didn’t get a very close shave. My R1 shaved much more smoothly & a fair bit closer.
Last weekend, I decided to give my S2 another try & it was a revelation, shaving both very smoothly & very close. I just did 2 passes (WTG / ATG) & I was done, no touching up was required. Just to prove this was a fluke, I have since shaved 3 more times with the S2 & each shave was equally excellent & so far there has been no cumulative irritation on my face.
As my prep has remained constant, my technique has obviously changed to allow me to get the best out of my S2. I think that using my AS-D2 has got me used to using the fairly shallow angle that I now use with my S2. Using the Ever Ready & SEs in general, has got me used to making the longer, slower, strokes that seem to work with the S2.
My S2 has now replaced my H2 as one of the 4 permanent members of my 5 razor rotation.
