Last fall I was looking for a new hard soap for the winter. I read the reviews but discounted the ones that hated the fragrance as: “stale smoke” or “dirty ashtray”. I like Tabac (that some also hate) and sandalwoods so I thought the “woodsy” scent would be good for me.
But when I opened the soap I worried I had made a mistake. The scent was really strong with a pungent smokiness that was kind of unpleasant. I thought OMG what have I done, those people who said it stinks were right, but I left the top off the bowl for a week or two and the scent’s strength diminished greatly.
I shaved with the soap heavily most of this winter and the scent has grown on me. The scent is now rather subtle and I like it a great deal, now I wish the scent hadn’t faded quite so much. The soap’s performance is excellent like other DR Harris hard soaps and it has found a favored place in my winter rotation.
I’m getting ready to switch to my summer soaps and will be shelving Marlborough for the summer, but I enthusiastically look forward to breaking it out again next fall.
I’m so glad I persevered with this soap. I would recommend anyone who initially finds the scent of Marlborough off putting, to air it out and give it a second try. Obviously not everyone will like it even after the scent fades but if you like the woodsy, musky, darker scents this is great soap with a unique scent and top level performance.
