G'day all!
A little over 2 weeks ago, my Gillette Vibrating razor that used those expensive 4 blade cartridge heads somehow broke on the way home from an out of town trip.
Since I needed a replacement razor, I decided to check out a few online reviews.
And one that caught my eye was for that Micro Touch Razor that Rick Harrison of Pawn Stars was hawking so I expanded my research to included TTO Double Edged Safety Razors.
And a lot of the reviews I found where posted right here on Badger&Blade.
So on July 26th, I joined the forum and I was immediately given a lot of good advice by lots of friendly members.
The very next morning, I received a PM via one of the Electronic Cigarette/Vaping forums that I am a member of, and it turned out to be one of the members of B&B who recognized my same user Id.
And he most graciously PIFd me a 1960 Gillette Flair Tip Super Speed Razor and an assortment of blades to try.
While I was waiting for my care package to arrive, I found an old but serviceable Mug and wood handled Boar bristle brush and made a pilgrimage to Wally World to purchase a cake of Van Der Hagen "Luxury Shave Soap" as well as a styptic pencil so I could have my first shave while I waited for my Amazon order of Proraso shaving soap, new brush and a razor and brush stand with bowl and a supply of Silver Blue Double Edged razor blades to ship. The order finally shipped yesterday after a week!
Meanwhile, the Mrs. took a peek at my Amazon Wish List and ordered a Parker 99R razor for me as a surprise.
My PIF package arrived this last Friday and the razor looked like it had just left the factory.
So Saturday morning came and it was time for the big event.
To begin with, I approached the issue keeping firmly in mind that there was an art to this type of shaving. And not to expect a perfect shave the very first time. And that I would not be escaping my first attempt without a little loss of blood and personal dignity.
So I retired to the master bath that had everything laid out on the sink and left the shower head filled with information I had found here on the forum as well as advice from behind the scenes.
The end result? Kinda mixed which like I said I had expected. My lather was terrible and I had an equal amount on the mirror and vanity top to what was on my face. Which was more like a while film than a proper lather.
The shave itself was the best shave I can ever remember having. Most of my face and neck were as smooth as a baby's backside and I only had three nicks or "Weepers" to deal with. And perhaps a slight razor rash which some cream or balm I borrowed from my wifes massive collection while I am waiting for Amazon to deliver my own.
Sundays shave was mixed results as well. One small nick but I missed some new areas. No Razor Rash. But I did drop the razor in the sink and it bounced around a bit so I changed the blade out for a new one. BTW, these are Feather Blades I have been using.
This morning's shave.
I finally managed to build a decent lather. No nicks and the areas I missed the time before came out fine. But I missed a couple new areas.
Thinking that in a month or two, I will have a fairly good handle and be able to depend on something at least close to a Barbershop Shave every morning. Well 8 or 9 out of ten times anyway.
The bad news, I have been bit by the bug.
LIke I said, I have been doing a lot of lurking around here and have read a lot of reviews.
Somewhere along the way, I became enamoured with the Adjustable DE TTO razors and I actively started looking for them online.
At 10:00 PM EST this last Friday evening, I entered a bid and won a lot of 6 vintage razors. One Schick, and 5 Gillette razors. And two of the Gillettes were indeed the adjustable razors that I decided I just had to have!
When I have received them, I will clean them up a little and post pictures here on the B&B and hopefully the experienced members here can help me identify exactly what I have and what the values are.
Thanks for taking the time to read my drivel and I look forward to hearing any comments or wisdom you feel like sharing!
