Hi. This is just my 2nd shave w/a DE safety razor and I'm not sure how to keep my razor from plugging w/hair & soap & dead skin to the point where it won't shave w/o pressure - which leads to cuts and scrapes. I do a third of a cheek and it already starts to plug up even though I rinse in running water and try to shake it out whenever I notice it starting to plug. The running water won't rinse it all clear and it plugs up to the point of not shaving properly and becoming dangerous. The only solution that seems to work is to clear it under running water with a few strokes of a soft bristled tooth brush. But I'm concerned that this could quickly dull the blade.
I suppose I could loosen it up before each rinse but I'd probably be doing this a dozen times or more on the first pass and it would seem to not be very safe. It doesn't seem to plug much less on a second pass either. It seems to be mostly a soap buildup in between the razor and the blade that is plugging it up. I watched lathering videos before starting to try to get off to a good start. I searched and read in blogs and forums but I've never seen this problem discussed or mentioned.
Before this I used an electric but never got a very close shave. Before that I used double and triple edge schick or gillete razors which also gradually plugged but not near as quickly; when they plugged if a good rinse didn't unplug them I'd repeatedly rub a thumb down the middle while rinsing until it completely cleared out. I usually only had to do that after buildup from several to many complete shaves. (Possibly because I never used shaving cream, shaving only after a hot shower). I haven't tried flexing the DE blade while rinsing to clear and thought the best thing was to post here for answers. It must be a common issue with a simple fix. Any suggestions/techniques would be appreciated.
