Please tell me if you all agree with my very general assessment of AOS products...
AOS was one of the first creams, oils, and balms that I ever tried. Up until that point, that's all I thought there was in the wet shaving world. After much more time and sampling of other brands and products, I now have a clearer view of where the AOS products fit into the greater scheme.
Generally speaking, their fragrances seem much (MUCH) stronger and artificial than other, more reputable brands. Their sandalwood, for example, while not awful, smells more plasticky and overly-cologned to me than comparable scents of brands like T&H, C&E, and EJ. Their lavender cream was very difficult for me to shave with because of the smell. It was stinging my nostrils the entire time. It's a nice smell, but geez, dial it back a little!
Another thing I noticed across the board on AOS products is that they seem to bother my skin a little more than other brands. Even the lavender, which is supposed to be their "sensitive skin" formula, gave me some irritation. Let me be the first to say that I'm one of us that does have slightly sensitive skin, and I've found brands like EJ and Aubrey botanicals (both all natural) to be WAY easier on my skin. This isn't to say that "non-sensitive" formulas from other brands don't bother me at all, just not as much as AOS!
The pre-shave oil is much more thick and viscous than other brands, and their aftershaves burn my face. To date, I have sampled their sandalwood, ocean kelp, lavender, and unscented.
In conclusion, it seems to me that AOS shaving products, while probably satisfactory for beginners and those with tougher skin than myself, are inferior to more highly-regarded brands (i.e. the three T's). What do you gentlemen think?
