Just had to use it.

I've had this in my collection for some time now and it has always haunted me. I had posted it when I got it and discussed the provenance of the piece from the documentation from the French Historical Society and the previous owner being the Marquis de Goulain in the Loire Valley.

But it sat there and I wondered. What does it shave like?

Regardless of the historical value, and some on some sites saying it is a museum piece , I gave in. It's in my collection and I'm going to use them all at least once.

Tonight I broke down.

I think I'm gonna' use this again.

First off, honing it drove me crazy. Oh, it was easy enough but the jitters of handling it and fearing the worst ( dropping it or something ) had me a bit on edge. But I got through it just fine. Both blades. Granted one has a small nick very near the heel but I wasn't about to go grinding off steel just to chase it away. I generally don't shave with the heel and besides, I had another blade handy should I need to use it. The blades came up just fine by all standards.

The actual shave was very odd at first. I mean not having a tail made the razor seem a bit awkward at first and the weight of the second blade still in the scale was peculiar feeling initially. A few passes and it was all over. It's just a razor and I'm having a great shave. All the hubub you read about with razors having a special "balance" yada, yada , yada, just need not apply.

You grab it and you shave. Period.

Well barely two passes later after a lather of Tabac it was all over. BBS from a truly vintage blade with some history to back it up and I'm a very happy guy.

I loved every minute of it.

No, it's not restored and no,, I'm not going to do a thing to it. Just enjoy it as it is. Hand painted Whale Bone scales, leather wedge that holds the blades in place and wonderful etchings on both blades.

I know this should be in SOTD and if a moderator feels compelled to move it that's fine. But I thought a blade (s) like this is a bit different than the ordinary and might be interesting to see.

Really,, how many guys are shaving with one of these on any given day? That's my journal entry.
