I have been shaving my head and my face (light beard, sensitive skin) for the past year with 50 blades (10 models, 5 blades each) from tryablade.com and my Merkur Progress set to 1.5 on the dial. I decided on the Derby Extra as my blade of choice for how it felt and how cost effective it was. This setup does wonderfully with me, no complaints at all shaving my head every other day and my face every day.
Well at Christmas I was surprised with my Grandfather's 1974 (I think. U2 is code) Gillette Slim Twist. Looks just like this one:

And here are some pics of the actual DE Razor with pressuably the last razor blade my Grandfather every used:

So after cleaning it out well and inspecting things, it appears to be in great working order. I inspected blade alignment and to my eye, installed blades look straight and spot on. I also felt and inspected the safety bad for any nicks or dents and all looks well (I can take more detailed pics when I get home if requested). Can there be problems with these older razors that I can't see with the naked eye?
Here's the problem... after inserting a brand new Derby Extra blade, this razor chews me up pretty good. I've tried it a few times now and seemingly it shaves really easy, almost cartridge like in how easy it is based off how mild it seems. No big nicks, but a lot of irritation, I can feel the micro abrasions and redness coming on right after I shave.
I've tried that same, first Derby blade in my Merkur progress and no trouble. I tried a new blade (from the same cellophane 5-pack in a package of 100 blades I bought) in the Slim Twist and same irritation again.
I'm not experienced with other DE razors other than the Merkur Progress. I bought the adjustable Merkur to make sure I could adjust the razor to my needs as I learned how to shave with a DE (I figured "how am I supposed to know how aggressive a shave my face enjoyed?" so I bought an adjustable :p). Is there really a big learning curve from one razor to the next? I really feel like I've got my technique on lockdown after a year with the Progress. I don't get it. All reviews of the Slim Twist state it is a mild shave, and I would agree based off blade exposure, but it's just not agreeing with me and It'd be really nice to use something my Grandfather used to use.
Any ideas?
