Lather Recovery

This may be a silly beginner question:

Should excess lather on the brush be discarded, or can one successfully recover it by squeezing it onto the puck? Will recovering the lather cause any problems, or will it simply extend the life of the soap?

So far, I've been recovering the lather, but when I weighed the soap to see how much I had used so far (to make usage projections), I noticed that it was holding an estimated 2 ounces of water. Therefore, I began to wonder if this is normal, or will the water-holding harm the soap.
