Greenhorn needs advice on first straight razor

Hi fellas, I just got my first real straight razor in the mail yesterday(have been dabbling with a shavette while I accumulate the gear required to hone and maintain a true S.R.) and I have some questions. A bit of background on the razor: it is a early 50's vintage Russian razor that I got off of ebay. I did read up on them a bit prior to buying and have heard that due to the hardness of the steel that they can be a bit difficult to hone but apparently shave quite well once the edge is set. This particular razor appears to my untrained eye to be unused, or NOS. There doesn't appear to be any hone wear at all and the edge is butter knife dull.

The reason for my post here is that when I look down the length of the blade straight on from the tip it looks like the spine of the blade is asymetrical, like the hollow grinding was not done quite evenly on both sides of the blade. I'm assuming this will be problematic when I try to hone the blade as I will end up with a bevel that is more acute angled on one side and more obtuse on the other? So my initial thought is to use electrical tape only on the one side of the spine to shim it out in hopes of more closely matching the bevel angle on the opposite side of the blade. Does this seem reasonable, or is there a better approach I should be attempting? I have pictures of the razor that show what I'm describing I'm just not sure how to go about attaching pictures here on this forum so if anyone can point towards some instructions for that as well I would be grateful. Has anyone encountered this type of thing before? I assume it is not entirely uncommon to find razors that have been worn in to a similar condition through improper honing so hopefully it can be corrected. If not, then I at least have the perfect blade to practice stropping with as it is too blunt currently to cut the leather if I mess up : )

Let's block ads! (Why?)
