I don't know when it started but I am sure it was inevitable with "Black Friday", "Shop Local Saturday" and "Cyber Monday"...today is Giving Tuesday. Giving Tuesday is meant to piggy back on Cyber Monday and the growth of social media based giving. If you spend any time at all on social media today you are no doubt going to be asked by a friend or local organization to give money today. The nonprofit sector has seen significant growth in donations coming from younger more tech oriented folks. Seems the younger crowd WANTS to give they just don't know who to support. When friends who know and support an organization ask their friends to support the same organization...they do.
I happen to be part of a dynamic nonprofit organization whose purpose is to support and strengthen the entire social service sector, so naturally we are part of a "GIVE BIG" campaign that runs from 00:01 this morning to 24:00 tonight. What is unique and cool about the Give Big campaign we are part of (we are also part of its organization and operation but there were MANY other people and org's that made it all possible) is that this is our second year of doing it and last year was a huge success. Not only did our region raise $300k for about 100 organizations, we taught those organizations HOW to continue using social media to raise funds. Another cool thing about the GIVE BIG is that the majority of donations came in small dollars from a LOT of people...people who had never previously known of the organization(s) they ultimately chose to support.
EDIT: If appropriate maybe a Moderator or Steward would be so kind as to include a link to the NBCF Sue Moore donation site .
We here on B&B are familiar with the Saint Sue Moore Memorial Auction that is held each year in the memory of Sue Moore ...but did you know you could give $$ all year long to the very same cause (the national breast cancer foundation, inc.)? (I didn't put a link to the NBCF donation site but you can find the link in the Sue Moore auction thread)
As much as I would love to ask each and every one of you to support MY favorite nonprofit (the one I donate my money and time to), I am sure you have your own favorite. If you don't currently have a favorite you might be able to find a GIVE BIG campaign being run in your area today (or this week) that will help you find a favorite. Asking for others to support my organization was not my intention, my intention was to draw ATTENTION to the opportunities you have to give. In my experience working with our local foundation(s) in an effort to raise money locally AND my clients who want to give, I find that many people who want to give just don't know who to give to ...they have never been asked.
So ...today is giving Tuesday ...who did you give to (or would you give to if you had the extra cash)? Does your are have a GIVE BIG campaign?
I live in San Bernardino County (you know, the one that had the terrorist attack at the county Christmas Party December 2nd last year) so I have no shortage of organizations to support during the GIVE BIG San Bernardino campaign. BUT my favorite is Academy for Grassroots organizations.
Giving Tuesday -who are you supporting?
