Gents, the wife has asked me to compile a small list of wants for the season and I am trying to stay completely practical this year. She surprised me with a bottle of Hammam Bouquet last year and I am not going to ask her to go that far. I am in need a few updated mess hall items. Mostly accessory type things. Measuring spoons, a few specialised measuring cups, etc. Nothing too grandiose but I do want quality.
Measuring spoons first. Now this may sound a bit persnickety but I find most measuring spoons to be poorly designed. I know, I know. A tablespoon is a tablespoon. But the size of the handles and the design of the spoon basin is important. I look at these from Oxo and find the design style very nice and the handle size good. But they are very lightweight stamped material and have a rather cheap feel to them. I definitely want spoons that are all one piece or in the case of the Oxo, the handle padding is well bonded to the handle itself. Good/bad experiences with these? Durability? Something out there that's similar? Oxo stainless spoons
Cooking thermometers. I like the models suggested by America's Test Kitchen. The two look really good but I would like second opinions. Also, I have a good multimeter capable of temperature measurements and wondered if there is a decently long thermocouple or temp probe I could use with it for oven temperatures? Accessories like that may total more than the dedicated thermometer and it has a timer function as well. Thermopen and Chef Alarm from Thermoworks. Both of these seem to get really great reviews.
Electronic scales. I am wide open here. Accuracy is of course important but durability and ease of use should be high on the list as well.
Mandolin slicer or equivalent. SAFETY first on this one, usability next.
Specialised measuring cups. I have seen the Oxo models used for drink mixing and they look really useful since they have the graduations marked almost across the bowl as you look into it. This makes precise measuring rather easy. Also, some seem to be rediscovering the old scientific measuring flasks and beakers. Most are made from the proper borosilicate glass that old Pyrex measuring cups used to made from. Freezer, oven, burner. Didn't matter. Brands? How about graduations? Most are calibrated for ml but it would be nice to have dual markings.
Thank you for your help. BTW, vendors?
