I always look only at the handles with an eye towards how they would look after a good scrub. Find a design that calls to you. Most of the old brushes have knots that are too dry and brittle to be salvageable. Changing the knot is not a very difficult task. You just need a new knot of the right diameter, a knife, a Dremel tool, and some epoxy.
