Last week I won a give away from Super Safety Razor, the American distributor for Parker razors and Taconic shaving soaps. One of the prizes was a four ounce tub of Taconic Urban Woods Shave Cream. Taconic says that the ingredients are organic and it is a pretty simple list.
Ingredients: Stearic Acid, distilled water, cocos nucifera (coconut) oil, glycerin, carthamus tinctorius (safflower) seed oil, theobroma cacao (cocoa) seed butter, honey, sodium borate, essential oil blend, phenoxyethanol, and caprylyl glycol, and rosemary extract. It’s also made in the USA, in New York state.
For a cream it seems pretty firm, the thickness and consistency reminds me of petroleum jelly. It has a nice scent, I smell evergreen forest, tobacco and a hint of black pepper. The smell is not strong and it doesn’t linger. This is a plus for me, I don’t have to worry about clashing scents if I want to wear aftershave.
I used this cream for several days, both face lathering and bowl lathering, using a Parker Pure Badger brush (also a prize) and an Omega 49. Face lathering with this cream is awesome, scoop off a nickel size portion of cream, place it on your wet brush and go to work. Lots and lots of thick, slick lather - good for three passes at least. Bowl lathering is excellent also. I was a little surprised at how much water was needed to create a sizable amount of lather, more than I thought it would. This isn’t a problem, just an observation. It should be noted that both of the brushes I used eat lather so that could be part of the issue.
The shaves themselves were wonderful, using a Parker 99R with Astra SP blades for all of the shaves. The lather is very slick and moisturizing. The razor glides across my face. I never get nicks or weepers, but sometimes get some irritation at the base of my neck on the third pass. Not so while using this cream. It could be the slickness of the lather or my technique is improving. It rinses off well and leaves my skin slippery and soft. As I said the scent doesn’t linger.
This cream moves to the top of my somewhat limited collection of products, displacing Proraso Red in the 150 ml tub. If you get a chance to try this cream I say give it a chance, I think you will be pleasantly surprised.
