From my thirty years of daily shaving I collect so far that the best, easiest and the most trouble-free way to shave is a Gillette cartridge system along with a brush lathering. I have also Muhle R89, R41, Fatip OC DE razors and time to time I try to get a pleasure from the wet shaving process, but if I need just to shave and go I take the Fusion, and two passes give BBS till next day with no bumps or cuts along with the less iritation. They in Gillette definetly do a great job, every next cartridge system noticeably exceeds predecessors, and my current Proglide Flexball Power is the best razor I had ever. And in my opinion is disparately better in a shave quality than any of my DE with any blade. If I aim just to shave, not to dive in that shaving routine with some preshave, scuttle lathering, warm towel etc... But seems I like that routine more and more. And glance at straight razor as a probable next step, although I never had one in my hands.
I think I need some advice from those who already gone this path:
- Could a straight razor in skilled hands really bring any pleasure from a shaving process? (There should be a reason to go with those honing, stroping, paying for all that equipment and so on, right?)
- How long would it take to get that skill?
- Which razor would you recommend to start from? (Probably, the most "original" question, I know. I think the first one should be about 5/8" half hollow. I just don't like any cheap tools and would like to get a good one or two for years, so your recommendation on some proper models would be appreciated)
- The same question on equipment and materials for honing and stroping, point to some good ones, please.
Thanks in advance for your advice and consideration.
