That seems to be the case but the two usually go together. As you get older dark hair turns grey (blonde and red hair doesn't seem to do this). Your hair also seems to thin out as you get older so it's hard to say if the texture changes but I think it does.
Usually male pattern balding that comes from the front starts in the early 20's and the kind that starts from the back (crown) seems to start in the mid 30's and becomes more noticeable in the 40's. If you are 45 and haven't had any hair loss you are probably ahead of the curve.
Sometimes people don't notice it on themselves however. If you have longer hair that is brushed back it can be covering thin spots. If you get a short haircut and it still looks full on top and from the back you are probably good to go. Everyone has fuller hair around the sides and back so the top, front or back is where the action is. :)
The "good" news is that if you do start to lose some hair, particularly from the back, it is less noticeable when you have grey hair then when it is still dark. Of course, the trade-off is that you look older with grey hair. :)
I now have grey hair and it's going bald from the back. I'm older than you but it was noticeable at your age and wasn't all grey by your age.
