For my birthday last year I got myself a Pilot Metropolitan with a medium nib, and I have been using it mostly at work, where I make just a few notes in things during the course of a day.
Until then, my pen was a Sheaffer Targa with a 14K medium italic nib. Excellent pen, except it always inks my fingers, and the clip got bent out of shape when it was almost new, in the 90's, and there doesn't seem to be a way to fix that.
I have come to realize that I miss that italic nib. The round nib that the Metropolitan comes with makes my writing look so boring (and it needs all the help it can get).
So I asked my daughter could I borrow her pen today. She's ten, interested in calligraphy, and I bought her a Pilot Plumix and a Pilot Parallel for her birthday. The idea is that if I like the Plumix italic nib, I could buy a Plumix and switch the nib onto the Metropolitan. The Plumix is under $15 Canadian.
A couple of pages written in my journal, and sure enough, I like that nib a lot. There is that slashing style that I have been missing, and the definite feel of the edge on the paper. That old pleasure. Frankly, the whole pen is excellent, and I wonder how the heavier body of the Metropolitan would affect the feel of the nib. Maybe I just want the Plumix. Maybe I need two of them so I can switch one and keep the other.
Coaxed younger daughter to the local pen shop with the promise of a visit to the local ice cream shop afterwards. And... they are out of stock!
Not bad dad enough to steal my daughter's nib, so I will practice patience. Envy.
