Hello, I'm Rod, and I'm two weeks into DE razor shaving. I'm in my mid-30's and have been using Braun electric shavers for most of the last 15 years, and Gillette Mach 3 razors whenever I was between shavers. Well, the cleaning system on my Series 7 shaver went out again, and I was down to a very used Mach 3 cartridge, so I looked for other options and stumbled into the DE world. I went to my local Art of Shaving store and went all-in - I picked up a Muhle R89 Grande, a Sandalwood kit, their Kensington brush and stand, and a 10-pack of Merkur blades.
After reading up on this site and watching YouTube videos by Mantic59 and Geofatboy, I got through my first few shaves loving it. I'm not sure why, maybe it was the minimal expense, but I purchased a 50 Feather blades. This led to me hacking up my neck up on my 5th shave and first with a Feather blade. I wish I'd stuck to the Merkur only in these last two weeks, as I swapped back and forth a couple of times, and saw many more nicks with the Feather due to poor execution. The Merkur worked just fine for me, but I just couldn't stop myself from jumping ahead! I'll have to hide the Feather blades until I am more proficient in the art of DE shaving.
One thing I noticed was that I haven't planned well with timing in the morning for DE shaving and getting out the door. I've got twin 26-month old boys, so every morning is different and can often be hectic. What was 5-7 minutes with my Braun is 15-20 minutes with the DE, so I just decided I'd try shaving at night, right before bed. It's not been 8 hours since my shave, and my face still feels quite clean, closer than it would've been if I had just used my Braun.
I'm glad I stumbled into this world and this site. It's been fun to read up on shaving history, learn various techniques, and get started on this journey.
My next step is to try other blades through a sample pack. Any suggestions?
