Couple of things, first to answer your question, I don't think many of us use a slant as a daily driver. I know that I use my slants about once a week. Many folks think that a slant works better if you got more than a day's growth, and for me, I use my slant the day after I tried out a razor that did not give me a DFS.
Second thing, slants should not be giving you irritation. The technique is slightly different from a regular DE. Use a steep angle and let the weight of the razor do the shaving. Don't try to put any pressure on the head. I just shaved with my 39c tonight and it was a very comfortable shave. My smoothest DE razor is the Wunderbar, which is about the most extreme slant you can find today.
Give your face a rest for a couple of days and then try again. Of course, very slick soap helps significantly.
