RazoRock Chubby - First Shave with My First Good Badger

In the other thread, I asked for advice on what badger I should try. In the end, I ordered a RazoRock Chubby. It finally came in (the PO here is problematic) so I thought I would talk about it ... because that's what we do, right?

I had a previous badger brush but it was terrible. I have a lot of boar brushes now and they're great. But I wanted to try a decent badger to see if I was missing something.

I got the RR Chubby in the ivory handle. It looks really classy. It is quite a bit smaller than I was expecting. Here it is next to a Semogue 1250 and a Fatboy.

I did a test bowl lather using Italian Barber Amici and even though I was whipping the soap, it produced a dense lather. I was surprised. I was mostly trying to get some lather into the brush and so was wanting to produce some volume, which I expected to be more aerated than I care to shave with. Not so!

I had previously shaved with RR XXX and so for the best comparison, I did that again. I face lathered. The feel of the brush on my face was so different than my boar brushes: it feels like some sort of "flowy" material that moves around as it is brushed over my face. I could not really feel the individual hairs. Very interesting!

In the end I had a good lather.

It lasted well for three passes. On the cleanup pass, I squeezed the rest of the lather out of the brush. There was more than enough for a cleanup run, but it was very watery lather. Slick, but watery.

After cleaning out the brush and giving it some strong shakes to remove most of the water, it had bloomed quite a bit.

Even wet, it's clearly much denser than the Semogue 1250 (not apples to apples, of course).

It's clear I have been missing something. Is it "better" than my boar brushes? Who knows! I just know that it's different and I like it a lot.

Let's block ads! (Why?)
