As first-aid, try taking it apart and blowing it out with compressed air. Work the mute button off and on several times to make sure it clicks like the others. This may fix it, maybe not.
It should be fairly easy to replace the handset. Unless its still under warranty, it will be much cheaper to replace than repair.
Those cordless phones come in singles, doubles, triples, and quads ... just buy a single set of the same model and replace the defective one. And you'll have a spare charger left over that you can put in another room.
