I never thought I would be considering going to a straight razor, but here I am. My question is rather simple, but probably does not have a simple or short answer.
I have been wet shaving for three years. The first 6 - 8 months were with a SE (GEM 1912) and then another 6 months with a mix of DE (Gillette NEW) and SE. The last two years have been pretty much DE. I have got my technique down and can make really good lather. I still get irritation and bumps on a regular basis, but no ingrown hairs.
And so I wonder about straights. I do not mind the learning curve of the actual shaving. I am retired. I have time. I am not crazy about all the paraphernalia attached, but I think I can keep it fairly simple. I've studied the threads on using lapping film. I'm thinking I can do with a WD poor man's stropping kit for awhile, then go with a decent strop, then lapping films. This is my plan so far if I go the straight razor route.
The question is whether a straight razor does better in the irritation department compared to DE shaving. This also may be a YMMV area. I realize that. I would like to hear from anyone who cares to give me their experience going from DE shaving to straights as to how it affected their skin (or not).
Skin irritation, bumps, rash, etc. compared to DE shaving
