The Physics of the Coti: Another interesting trip.

Having just received a second coti that looks and feels significantly different from my first, I went to visit a friend who works at the Jewelry store downtown. I got a chance to look at each stone through his microscope in order to determine which is the more aggressive. It turns out to be something of a mystery. One stone feels to the hand to be more rough than the other, but it has smaller garnets than the smoother one. So, now the question is, does the hand know better than the scope, or does the size of the embedded stones make the stone more aggressive. As I contemplate removing more material from the toe and heel of the blades I am working on, this would seem to be a question to ask. Actually, I will probably just straight hone just the toe and heel on an aggressive lapping plate until I reach a shape I like and then just do the thing. But I am wondering if bigger grits make the stone faster, or does it really matter that much?
