I saw some interest in PRC and the razors they make. I wanted to post a review today after my first shave with my latest addition. This started a good four months ago, in my new to SR shaving phase I wanted to acquire more and saw PRC as a good way to get a budget blade. That intention to get a siren quickly changed to a Phoenix when I acquired a square and round point blades. I liked the appeal of the Spanish point. They were awesome and I changed my order, back to the wait. Next itch, I wanted different scales, again, super to deal with, just say what you wanted and they would make it happen. So I finalized on spalted maple, cool choice. Only one issue, when cutting the scales, the wood was breaking apart, solution, use. A backing of G10 black with a matching spacer. Finally, it was done, out it went, and in my hand today.
So, initial impressions.....
7/8 is the widest blade I have and that's this one. My two hart steel razors are both 6/8
scales, couldn't be happier with the wood choice, I like the shape, it's unique among the other razors I have. Pinning, the one off center at the spacer, I'm more of a balance guy, looks off balance, but that's their style. And I get it.. It's not a deal breaker and a way for me to have something different.
blade: it's thick, I don't have calipers, but it is thicker than my 6/8 blades, plus with spacers it is slightly wide at the pivot pin. Now, I'll say that's a function of the blade width and there's no way around it. That thickness is good though, as it makes stropping very comfortable. Way more comfortable than my hart steel with thumb notch.
When holding for N-S passes it is a natural fit for my hand, nice weight to it, definitely a blade I will need to take my time to become fully proficient with.
Sharpness: shave ready as advertised. Absolutely no issue here.
included sheath: nice thick wool very basic, but serves the purpose and fits the razor like a glove.
