So I picked up a Tenth and then Eleventh, Twelfth and thirteenth Pierre recently, and with a Fourteenth on the way, I figured it was time for a thread to post about them... since they seem to be one of the rarest encountered hones in general (though apparently not terribly hard to find in flea markets in certain regions of France), and certainly a laughably under appreciated hone for its performance which I'd equate to a Thuri (Virtually interchangeable in my opinion) and which another user has compared to Razor quality Jnats. I can only venture to guess their lack of popularity is due to their rarity and the fact that most people will readily confuse them for Coticules, Thuris, Les Lat Coticules, Schwedensteins, Charnleys and similar stones due to their "copy-cat" appearance at times. I'd say nearly half of the ones I own now were bought as Coticules, with a couple having been sold as Charns. And two I own I still only consider probable Pierres (vs a Y/G thuri based on the dimensions and vs a green Schwedenstein based on performance), and can't rightly guarantee my ID.
My latest, seen in this post is probably my most expensive one so far once exchange rate and shipping are considered, as well as only the second I've bought AS a Pierre du Sud Ouest (being sold by one of the few other people I'm aware of with a "collection" of these hones). It's not my largest, but it does have the most surface area (Though not the Eight Feet of length the auction claimed ) as well as one of the most interesting patterns. Only my fourth with "Manganese" (or what looks like a coticules manganese) spots, and only my third with the strong iridescent tiger-stripe pattern. It's a bit on the harder side of my collection (the tiger pattern seems to appear mostly on the harder stones), and a bit on the slower side as well... though the speed is still on par with a moderate to soft Thuri.
