Let me say first that I'm still relatively new to this and I've only tried a few different blades. However, I'm wondering about the properties of various materials, platings, and coatings that can be found on safety razor blades. Surprisingly I've hardly been able to find any info on this, even in extended reviews and comparisons of various blades.
So, for example. Is stainless steel the main material for all blades, and anything else is just plating, or even just plating on the blade part? What about the difference between stainless, chrome, platinum, etc? Is silver and/or platinum just a marketing term, or do some of these have actual silver? What about blades that are somehow multiple metals, like the BIC Platinum Chrome? I've heard some blades are lightly coated in oil, how does that affect it? Anything else I should have asked, but didn't?
